Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Just had a wee dram. Loads of roasted chestnuts and old oloroso up front, really rich. Then chocolate and coffee dregs give it a nice bitter twist. There’s caraway and a dry spice mix, with sour herbs and tarragon hanging about. A bit of humidor, like old tobacco, plus soy sauce and fermented plum for that savoury kick. Nutmeg on the finish. Lovely stuff, proper moreish 🥃

Just poured a dram, light amber glow in the glass. First sniff brings roasted chestnuts and usual walnuts, a touch of hoisin sauce lingerin' like a sweet soy hint. On the palate, lovely nutty vibes mixed with old oloroso sherry depth, a whisper of tarragon and sour herbs, then a faint tobacco‑y note that rounds it off. Feels superb, always works for a relaxed evening. 🥃

Took a wee sip and straight away hit me with this old leathery tobacco pouch aroma, like a proper humidor in an antique shop. The nose is all roasted chestnuts and usual walnuts, that lovely nutty depth, with a dry spice mix lingering in the background. First taste, and there's this tobacco-y notes dancing with cloves and nutmeg, kinda reminds me of miso and hoisin – odd but works. A touch of sour herbs and oregano sneaks through, maybe from that fermented plum tang. The finish isn't too bold, just a wee lack of power, but it's always works smooth, leaves you thinking of coffee dregs and old hardwoods. Proper lovely dram, that. 🍷✨

This dram pours a lovely light amber, like catching sunlight through an old oloroso barrel. The nose is proper comforting – hardwoods and roasted chestnuts mingling with a touch of hoisin, almost like wandering into an antique shop where someone’s been toasting nuts by the fire. There’s a wee lack of power but it makes up for it with layers: bitter oranges and sour herbs dancing with cloves and nutmeg, while dry spice mix and miso give it a curious, savoury depth. On the tongue, it’s old walnuts and rather more on chocolate, rich and smooth, with lovely tobacco-y notes lingering like a well-worn leather pouch left open by the hearth. A hint of soy sauce sneaks in too, strange but not unpleasant, like a memory of something distant. Finishes gentle, no sharp edges, just a warm, woody embrace. Not bad at all 🥃

Ah, this one’s a proper stunner—like stumbling into an antique shop at dusk, all warm wood and dusty leather. First sip hits you with that bitter orange tang, sharp as a well-aged sherry, then—whoosh—this deep, nutty warmth, like old walnuts left in a humidor, slow-cooked. The cloves and cinnamon are singing in unison, almost like a choir warming up, while the chocolate creeps in, richer than I expected, wrapping around it all. There’s a wee lack of power, but that’s just enough to make it feel like a well-loved old friend—familiar, cosy, the kind that always works. The fermented plum and sour herbs add a bit of edge, like a dash of soy sauce in a stew, cutting through the sweetness just right. Roasted chestnuts and tarragon drift in the background, like the scent of a fire on a cold evening, while the coffee dregs at the end? Pure satisfaction—like the last sip of a cup you’ve been nursing for hours. Superb. Just superb.
