Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Pouring myself a dram last night and the nose was fantastic – proper strong green tea hit me first, then Big cinnamon swirling in like a Sunday morning. There’s something very lovely about how it sits there, deep gold in the glass, with hints of chestnut honey and toasts crackling in the background. Oak spices come through loud and proud, almost like crunching some pine needle underfoot. Surprisingly, it’s not as dusty as some I’ve had, just smooth, maybe a little tea-ish but in a good way. Definitely the strongest yet most balanced one I’ve tried – pairs brilliant with Brownies, honestly. Cheers to that 🥃

Sipping this dram, I get a whiff of strong green tea and a hint of big cinnamon, like toasted walnut cake with a drizzle of chestnut honey 🥃. The nose is all in keeping with the palate – a little tea‑ish, much less dusty, and there’s a long, mellow finish that feels like tea at the Balmoral. Very lovely, with notes of brownies and cakes everywhere, plus a whisper of pine needle crunch. Honestly, it’s the best of honeys mixed with oak spice, and it just keeps going. ☕️🌲

Just poured myself a dram and wow, the colour’s this lovely deep gold, proper inviting. The nose was fantastic straight away – got this strong green tea vibe, almost like I’m back at the Balmoral sipping their proper brew. There’s crunching some pine needle in there too, which is oddly refreshing. All in keeping with the nose, loads of chestnut honey and the best of honeys swirling around, but it’s not cloying. Much better than I expected, honestly. Big cinnamon hits you mid-palate, and the oak spices are proper generous – think walnut cake and toasted nuts. A little tea-ish but in a good way, and the finish is long with a touch of balsamic sweetness. Not a hint of dustiness, just cakes everywhere in the mouth. Strongest dram I’ve had in ages, but it’s all so well balanced. Proper lovely stuff. 🥃

Oh, this one’s proper lovely! First whiff—absolute chestnut honey, the best of honeys, like you’ve just cracked open a jar from some posh farm shop. Then a proper strong green tea vibe, not that weak Earl Grey nonsense, but something you’d get at a fancy hotel with cakes everywhere. Speaking of, I swear I could taste a bit of walnut cake in there, big cinnamon kick too—proper autumnal. On the palate, it’s much less dusty than some older ones I’ve had, which is nice. Still got that old age showing a wee bit, but in a good way—like a well-worn leather chair, you know? Loads of oak spices, almost like crunching some pine needle with a side of toasts. The balsamic note is there too, but not overpowering, just enough to make it interesting. Finish is long, proper long, and it’s all in keeping with the nose—word for word, really. A little tea-ish at the end, but in the best way. Very lovely stuff, much better than the last one I had. Cheers to that! 🥃✨

Blimey, this one’s a proper belter! The nose was fantastic – big cinnamon and chestnut honey upfront, with a hint of strong green tea and toasted walnut cake. On the palate, it’s the strongest yet, with many more oak spices and a balsamic kick that’s most balsamic. Old age started to show a wee bit, but in a good way, like a well-worn armchair. All in keeping with the nose, obviously. There’s something tea-ish lingering, almost like crunching some pine needle in a woodland bakehouse. Brownies and assorted beverages everywhere – proper decadent. Reminds me of teatime at the Balmoral, but with more peat in the tank. 🍂🍵
