Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Just had a cracking little dram the other evening 🤌 Pours a rich full gold, obvious quality sherry influence right off the bat. The spirit’s got a really tight, dry structure too, no flabbiness at all. Nose hits you with whiffs of fumes, a touch of tar, plus that toasted brown bread and a hint of leatherette like an old leather satchel. First sip’s all doughy warmth, then the spicy cinnamon kicks in, spicier as it opens up, mixed with earthy sherriness, hints of cigar smoke and even that odd old engine tang that’s so weird but works? There’s dry sherry notes, walnut cake sweetness, a bit of halva too. Finish is rather long, leaves leather and that warm spicy kick lingering.

Corr, this pour’s full gold, looks gorgeous in the glass 🥃 First taste is dry, propper tight, then that touch of both leather and leatherette hits, like digging out an old motorbike jacket from the back of the wardrobe. Warm spice kicks in right after – rather a lot of cinnamon, whiffs of cigar smoke, even that earthy sherriness that’s giving me proper bodegas in Jerez vibes, y’know? There’s delicate toasted brown bread notes, a hint of halva, walnut cake and even a little dough-like richness, plus that cheeky more engine oil whiff that shouldn’t work but absolutely does. Finish is rather long, spicier yet, with a touch of tar, a whiff of fumes, and even a faint couscous hint? Proper very good, that. Love it. 🤌

Had a dram that smelled like toasted brown bread with a pinch of cinnamon, a whiff of tar and old engine oil – reminded me of the bodegas in Jerez. Dry sherry quality comes through with leather, cigar smoke and a touch of liquorice, plus a couscous‑like sweetness. Finishes tight and spicy. 😊

Just poured a dram and immediately hit with this proper spicy kick – like cinnamon and clove dancing on the tongue. There's a deep, earthy sherriness underneath, think quality sherry soaked into old leather and walnut cake. The texture's tight, almost oily, with whiffs of engine oil and toasted brown bread. Mid-palate gets nutty, maybe some couscous and halva sweetness, but then the tar and spicier notes come back strong. Finish lingers with walnuts and a hint of leatherette – bold, a bit rough around the edges, but in a good way. Very good, that one. 🥃

Blimey, this one's a proper winter warmer. The nose hits you with cinnamon straight off – proper spicy, like a Christmas cake left out too long. There's this earthy sherriness underneath, almost like walnut cake soaked in something strong, and a whiff of fumes that makes me think of old engines or cigars. On the tongue, it's tight at first, then opens up to this dry, spicy kick with a touch of liquorice. The finish is all leather and leatherette, maybe a bit of halva if you're lucky. Oddly enough, there's a delicate toasted brown bread thing going on, which I didn't expect. It's very good, no doubt – transports you to some cosy corner of the world, if you catch my drift.
