Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Last mooching round those tiny little shops in France and Italy I picked up a dram that honestly? Chef’s kiss 🥃 Tasted like all those great, great whiskies I’ve had at whisky-geekery meetups, you know that warm, peaty, slightly briny vibe from those old Islay-style drams? Reminded me so much of the rare old single malts I tried at a mate’s cellar tasting a couple years bac. Dead proper stuff, no frills, just hits different after a long week of work.

This dram's got a proper toasty start - think brown bread fresh from the oven, with walnuts and a hint of cinnamon. Then it kicks in with this spicy edge, not overpowering but definitely there, like a quality sherry that's been left to age in a leather-bound humidor. The finish is rather long, dry, with a touch of liquorice and halva sweetness lingering. Tight on the palate, not too smooth, but I can't say no to that earthy, cigar-like depth. Proper nice, mate. 🥃

Got a dram that was a deep full‑gold colour, pretty tight on the palate at first – a lot of cinnamon and a whiff of licorice. Then it opens up into a rather long, spicier yet side, like an old engine humming, with hints of tar and a touch of engine oil. There's an earthy sherriness that takes me straight to bodegas in Jerez, plus a nice leather and leatherette feel that makes me think of cigars in a cosy lounge. The finish is dry but sweet, like walnut cake and a bit of dough, with a faint nutty, tobacco note. Very good, really comforting sip. 😊

Aye, this one’s got a real kick – spicier than I expected, with cinnamon and a dry punch that lingers. The nose hits you with engine oil and whiffs of fumes, oddly nostalgic, like an old garage. On the tongue, it’s tight but smooth, earthy sherriness blending with walnuts and liquorice. Reminds me of walnut cake and toasted brown bread, proper hearty. There’s a halva sweetness too, and the finish? Rather long, very good. Makes me think of bodegas in Jerez and a quality sherry, but with a leather edge. Smoky, almost cigar-like. Full gold in the glass, and that excellent dry and spicy sherry vibe just keeps coming back. Not bad at all, actually quite brilliant.

Right then, first sip hits you with this lovely licorice kick — wasn't expecting that at all. Then it opens up into proper earthy sherry territory, almost like walking into one of those old bodegas in Jerez. There's a touch of leather, sort of old leather and that plasticky leatherette thing going on, quite interesting really. The cinnamon is bloody bold — like proper warm spiciness that coats the tongue. Then comes the walnut cake, honestly like someone crumbled a slice right into my glass 🍰 A bit of dough there too, bready and rich. It's quite tight and dry, good quality sherry influence without being too sweet. The finish lingers with more cinnamon and that walnut warmth. Absolute corker this one, transports you straight to "the triangle" where they make the good stuff 🥃
