Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Just poured a dram that’s full gold in the glass, and straight away it’s like walking into a bodega in Jerez – dry, earthy sherriness with a kick of cinnamon and spice. There’s this whiff of fumes, almost like old engine oil, but it’s not off-putting – just gives it a proper depth. The taste is spicier than I expected, with walnut and halva sweetness lingering on the tongue. Leather and toasted brown bread come through too, kinda odd but it works. Reminds me of a walnut cake my gran used to make, but with a wicked dry finish. Bit of a rather long aftertaste, but in a good way. Excellent dry and spicy sherry influence here – not too cloying, just warming. 🥃

Ah, this one’s a proper belter. First sip hits you like an old engine coughing to life – there’s this oily, almost mechanical edge, but then it softens into something more inviting. The colour’s a deep gold, maybe with a hint of amber, and the nose gives off whiffs of fumes mixed with burnt brown bread and walnuts. It’s oddly comforting, like walking into a bakery that’s been left to go stale but still smells wonderful. On the tongue, it’s tight at first, dry as a bone, but then – bam – a wave of earthy sherriness crashes in, along with this spicy kick that lingers way longer than expected. There’s a touch of leather, both real and the faux kind, and it’s got this bready doughiness underneath. I’m getting hints of halva and walnut cake too, which is mad, but in a good way. The finish? Smoky, with a tar-like aftertaste and a rather lot of cinnamon dancing around. It reminds me of those old bodegas in Jerez, minus the heat – more like sitting in a quiet cellar with a cigar and a glass of quality sherry. Proper bonkers, but I’d have another. 😊

This dram’s got a real full gold look to it, proper rich on the eye. The nose? Straightaway hit me with toasted brown bread and walnuts, but then these odd whiffs of fumes creep in – like an old engine room or somethin’. Leather and engine oil notes too, earthy sherriness creeping through. Dry as a bone, but wait for it… it’s spicier than I thought, with cinnamon and liquorice stickin’ around. Reminds me of those dusty bodegas in Jerez, but not quite the same. Tight on the palate, needs a minute to stretch its legs.

This dram starts with a proper full gold colour, like a quality sherry from those bodegas in Jerez. The nose is all dough and toasted brown bread, with walnuts and a hint of walnut cake – rather comforting, actually. A whiff of fumes reminds me of an old engine, maybe some leatherette or tar lurking in there too, which gives it this tight, dry backbone. On the palate, it’s spicier than I expected, with cinnamon and liquorice dancing around, but there’s also this excellent dry and spicy sherry character that ties it together. The finish is long, leaving behind whispers of cigars and engine oil – not unpleasant, just... rich. Very good stuff, this. 🥃

A proper dram, this one. The nose hits you first with whiffs of fumes and old engine, but there’s an earthy sherriness underneath that’s quite inviting. On the palate, it’s full gold and rather dry, with a touch of dough and more engine oil notes. I’m getting hints of leather and leatherette, which I suppose fits the theme. There’s a rather on liquorice at first, then rather a lot of cinnamon kicks in, followed by delicate notes of toasted brown bread and a spicy kick. The finish is rather long spicier yet, lingering like a cigar in the back room of a bodega in Jerez. Quality sherry comes through, and the whole thing transports you to 'the triangle' – whatever that means. 🍷✨ Not bad, not bad at all. SGP:461 - 87 points, if you care about that sort of thing.
