Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Interesting wee dram this. On the nose, there’s a touch of drawing gum, like a freshly opened pack of art supplies, mixed with a clean seawater brine. The palate is medium, with a pleasant bitterness and those softer brines coming through. Smoked almonds and olives give it a savoury kick, while an extremely white white wine note keeps it fresh. The young peater is immaculate, not too heavy, just right. Proper moreish stuff 🤤

This dram’s got a right proper punch to it – starts with this waxy, almost drawing gum nose that’s weirdly comforting, like licking an old wooden desk. Then there’s raw wool and softer brines, which sounds odd but it’s smooth, not too sharp. Tastes like a faithful portrait of a classic old whisky, you know? Smoked almonds and tons of oaks from those triple casks, but not overpowering. There’s a weird hint of extremely white white wine in there, almost like chalk dust, mixed with smoked pears and olives that make me think of a seaside pub. Kirsch sneaks in at the end, and the finish’s immaculate young malts with a touch of ink – dark, lingering, like the last sip of a good session. Proper moreish, that one. 🥃

Just had a dram that’s proper Classic – the kind that makes you nod and think ‘well done’. There’s this bitter almond thing upfront, like someone’s been smoking nuts over a campfire, then a wave of peat hits, not too medicinal but more like seaweed and fish brine. The triple casks must’ve done their job – it’s clean enough to cut through that, but there’s still a funky edge, almost like someone stirred in a splash of gherkin brine or something. Mid-palate gets weird in a good way: Swiss cheese and fondue vibes, maybe a squeeze of lime juice to wake things up. The young malts are immaculate, but they’ve buried the cask influence under tons of oak and white wine – like if a wine glass got lost in a forest for a week. Ends with a whisper of kirsch and raw wool, which sounds daft but trust me, it works. No idea what they’re playing at with the ink and olives, but it’s the sort of whisky done by folks clearly having a laugh. Not much else but we weren’t in need of anything else, know what I mean?

Honestly, cracked this open last night and it’s such a laugh 🥃 First off, immaculate young peater right off the bat, not to rough at all, triple casked so tons of oaks come through proper Clean as anything, with that weird little drawing gum tang I oddly love, inky dark fruit hint too Then you get the gherkins, olive brine, seawater, softer brines, fish brine kicks, chalky mineral tang Smoked almonds, smoked pears, splash of lime juice to cut through, bit of fondue creaminess, hint of kirsch in the mix That extremely white white wine crispness peeking through, whisky flipper of flavours all the way, winesy depth, peat just humming in the back No utter junk flavours at all, just a little reactionary bitter kick at the end, faithful portrait of a solid young peaty malt Well done really, having a blast sipping this

Right so I cracked this one open on Friday night and honestly it knocked me about a bit Started off with this really immaculate young malt vibe, super clean and fresh almost like extremely white white wine if that makes any sense 🙃 Then tons of oaks just came flooding in, proper classic triple casks energy, like a faithful portrait of what youd expect from a decent dram Theres this weird briny fish brine thing happening with olives and softer brines, and somewhere in the background gherkins and Swiss cheese which sounds mad but it works? Then peat and smoked almonds and smoked pears rolling through, a bit of chalk and ink and raw wool on the back end which is proper reactionary old school The kirsch and lime juice give it this sharp bitter-fruity kick and some fondue creaminess, drawing gum finish that goes on forever Probably sounds like utter junk describing it like this but I was just having fun with it nahmean Well done to whoever bottled this, medium strength but packs a punch Whisky flipper approved I'd say 🥃
