Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Blimey, this whisky is glorious 🍸! It's refreshingly alive, like a spring morning in the countryside. I get hints of vanilla essences, straw, and a feeling of wine, like a rich mead. It drinks like wine, all smooth and sophisticated. There's a depth to it, like a very old whisky, with notes of dough roll and a hint of Haut-Brion blanc. The white berries and green berries are lovely, like a walk in the orchard. And the softer beers notes are a nice touch, like a pint down at the pub. I also get pebbles, drops of coconut, and a tartness that's just right. The medium finish is perfect, like a warm hug on a cold day. There's tiny herbs and pale honeys, like a field of wildflowers. And the humus and Jerez vinegar add a complexity that's just fascinating. It's like a cider, all fresh and fruity, with a hint of honeysuckle and iron. The yellow berries and plums are a nice surprise, like a juicy secret. The old white notes and lower natural strengths make it feel like a perfectly nervous whisky, like a first date 🍷. It's complex,

Blimey, this one’s a proper head-scratcher. First sip hits you with this iron-like tang, like licking a pebble from the beach, but then it mellows into something more… curious. There’s a whiff of damp earth and old wine barrel, makes me think of granddad’s cellar. The palate’s got green berries and yellow berries bouncing about, with a hint of kiwis that’s oddly refreshing. It’s got that wine-like body, almost like a white Bordeaux, but with a shy, nervous edge. You get these tiny herbs and honeysuckle flitting through, then BAM – a splash of Jerez vinegar that wakes you up. The finish is medium, clinging to the tongue like a half-remembered dream. Oddly satisfying, though. Can’t quite place the label – looks like it was designed by a moody artist – but the dram itself? Proper complex. Makes me wanna pour another and mutter “hold on, watch this!” under my breath.

Just had a dram that felt lower natural strengths but surprisingly complex – hints of kiwi and white berries, a touch of damp earth and humus, with drops of coconut and vanilla essences swirling in. It’s got that old wine barrel feel, a little tart like Jerez vinegar, and a medium finish that leaves pebbles and iron on the tongue. Honestly, it drinks like wine, refreshingly alive, and honestly glorious – hold on, watch this! – a whisper of honeysuckle and tiny herbs, almost like softer beers meets a plummy straw note. 😊

Blimey, this one’s a proper puzzle—like sipping an old wine barrel that’s been napping in damp earth. Straw and pale honeys first, then a whiff of colza oil and green berries, almost like a cider that’s had a chat with vanilla. There’s iron in there too, sharp as pebbles, but then it softens into white berries and a hint of mead. Hold on, watch this! The finish lingers with kiwis and tiny herbs, tart but glorious. Feels alive, almost nervous, like it’s got stories to tell. 🍷✨

Quite tart and lively, with kiwi, green berries and a bit of cider snap straight away. Then it goes softer, like pale honey, straw, vanilla, dough and a tiny coconut touch. There’s a funny winey feel too, old barrel, damp earth, pebbles, little herbs, even a splash of sharp vinegar. Bit scary at first, but in a lovely “hold on, watch this!” way 😄 Finishes medium, with plums, honeysuckle and white berries hanging about. Drinks more like an old white wine than a big dram, honestly.
