Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Justhad a dram that reminded me of a crisp white wine with a hint of golden delicious apple, a touch of seawater and brine, plus a faint antiseptic note like iodine solution. The peat is very young, giving a raw, almost chalky edge, and there's a weird undertone that feels like walking past a hospital's traumatology department – odd but oddly fascinating. Utter complexity in a medium body, finishes with a whisper of ashes and raw wool. 🥃

Firstsip hits me with a sharp lemon juice zing, then a whisper of brine and seawater that reminds me of a salty drink after a beach walk. There's a hint of raw wool and chalk, like sitting in an old hospital ward with a faint disinfectant smell, but also a sweet note of golden delicious apple and easy apples, plus a touch of manzanilla dryness. The smoke lingers like a working kiln, and I can taste a tiny iodine solution edge, giving that utter complexity. Feels young yet medium‑bodied, very much pure Islayness. 🍃

Took a sip and instantly thought of standing by the sea on Islay – proper maritime air, that salty tang hitting first. The smoke rolls in like a working kiln, not too heavy though, more like easy apples and golden delicious being toasted over driftwood. There's a medicinal edge, almost like iodine solution or antiseptic, but it's not off-putting. A splash of manzanilla sherry creeps through, mixing with vanilla and green pepper for utter complexity. The finish is long, with traces of raw wool and ashes, like licking a seaside stone. Excellent balance, really – salty, smoky, and surprisingly drinkable. 🥃

First sip hits you like walking into a traumatology department – sharp, medicinal, that iodine solution note right up front. But then it mellows into something proper coastal, like seawater and salty drinks mixed with a hint of manzanilla. The very young peaters give it this grassy, almost raw wool character, while vanilla and smoked almonds creep in underneath. There's a working kiln smokiness, not overpowering, and a touch of chalk that's oddly refreshing. It's young, sure, but the pure Islayness shines through – brine, lemon juice, green pepper, all balanced. Not too complex, just excellent in its own way, like easy apples after a storm. 🥃

Blimey, this one’s got such a good arrival straight off 🥃 First you get that raw wool hit, then a sharp lemon juice zing, followed by that antiseptic whiff that instantly takes me back to hanging round the hospital’s traumatology department with my uncle years back. There’s pure Islayness oozing out of it too – that working kiln smoke, seawater brine, very young peaty bits that hit the back of your throat proper. Underneath all that you’ve got soft pears, golden delicious apple, a hint of manzanilla sherry sweetness, plus those smoked almonds and a little vanilla kick, even a faint whiff of ashes from a beach bonfire. Finish is medium, leaves a bit of grassy, salty drinks tang on the tongue, no harshness at all really, just that classic young, briny Islay charm. Reminds me a bit of the old seaside kiosk crisp stalls too 🤣
