Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Just poured a dram and the first sip was pretty hot, like a flash of young calvados mixed with a hint of lemon rind. It quickly settled into a yeasty/autolytic vibe, almost like a sourdough starter left to prove – you can smell that fresh bakery air. There's a subtle parsley dressed with petrol note, a whiff of white pepper and a faint, almost greasy touch of sunflower oil. Mid‑palate brings out tart green apple peelings and a dash of citrus, while the finish has a dry, mineral oil feel that reminds me of plain cereals and a bit of bakelite. The whole thing feels very young and obvious in its youth, but surprisingly it has a good length – you can still catch a faint asparagus (white of course) and a whisper of lanolin on the way down. Cheers! 🥃

Started hot, like a summer's morning, then the citrus peels kicked in, shouting enough citrons to clear the room. A faint pilsner hop pop followed, giving it that light bitterness of a fair-ale crowd. The bready richness was unmistakable – it was like fresh proving bread right out of the oven, and that lil’ layer of white pepper added a clever twist. The finish dragged on, a good length of subtle aroma that reminded me of old library ink and a touch of lanolin, like a dry, mineral‑oil whisper. There were also hints of sunflower oil and thicker hessian notes, almost a quirky bakelite vibe. All in all it felt young and bright, with a gulp that felt like a tempest ending in a calm, warm soup. It’s the kind of thing you think about after a good pint, sipping on the edges of citrus and grain, and just letting the day melt away 🍹🙂

Just poured a dram and it's quite the ride. Hits the palate with this pretty hot kick at first, like a splash of citrons and lemon rind, but then it settles into something richer now. There's malt extract and a yeasty/autolytic vibe, almost like someone's proving bread in the next room. The obvious youth gives it a sharp edge, but the grist and plain cereals add a nice bready richness. Some oddball notes pop up though - think mineral oils and sunflower oil, which sounds weird but somehow works. A hint of asparagus white keeps it fresh, while the parsley dressed with petrol adds a weirdly intriguing twist. It's got this thicker notes of hessian thing going on, and a touch of white pepper. The highball form makes it easy to sip, but there's enough complexity to keep me thinking. Finish is decent, good length, though I could do without the faint ink and bakelite undertones. Overall, a perfectly charming young Bunna, if a bit peculiar. 🥃

Took a sip of this one neat, and blimey, it hits you pretty hot at first – like a splash of pilsner beer mixed with malt extract. Then it settles into this yeasty/autolytic vibe, think bready richness from proving bread and sourdough starter, but there's a strange thickness, almost hessian-like. Citrus peels and tart green apple peelings dance around, with a hint of young calvados sweetness. The grist and plain cereals give it a solid base, but then you get these odd notes – sunflower oil, lanolin, even a whiff of parsley dressed with petrol. It’s like someone poured a highball form into a bakery, not sure if it works, but it’s perfectly charming young Bunna stuff. The finish? Good length, lingering like bitter ales and bailed hay left in the rain. Definitely has obvious youth, but richer now than I expected. Blimey, that’s a mouthful. 🥃

Right, poured a dram last night. Bit hot at first, actually, quite fiery on the nose! Give it a minute... ah, there we go. Now it's settling nicely. Getting loads of citrus peels, lemon rind, and this sharp, tart green apple peelings note. There's a definite yeasty washback vibe to it, like proving bread or a bread starter. Really quite bready and rich now. Smells a bit like young calvados too, you know? And there's this... how to describe it... mineral oils, maybe a splash of highball form freshness. Also getting a whiff of parsley dressed with petrol, which is oddly specific but nice. And white asparagus, the white bit of course. Taste follows through. It's got a good length. More of that malt extract, grist, and assorted beers feeling – like pale white wine or even a pilsner beer, but also a bitter ale edge. White pepper gives it a little kick. Reminds me of bailed hay in the sunshine. It's quite a rich one now, darker notes like ink and thicker notes of hessian in the background. But overall, it's a very fine young dram. Perfectly charming. Really enjoying younger whiskies these days, to be honest. 🥃
