Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Blimey, this whisky's got a lot going on 🤯! I get a strong medicinal side, like being in a hospital 🏥, with a hint of mercurochrome and arnica. It's a bit like smelling bandages, weirdly 🤪. But then there's this sweet and sour thing happening, like crunching some unripe olives 🥒, and a wee tad simplistic, if I'm honest. The straw and grassy grittiness are nice touches, though 🌾. It's got a long finish, on tar, smoke, seawater, and lemons 🌊, which is pretty cool. I also get a whiff of peated something, like old ropes 🚣, and a bit of Barbour grease, which is a bit odd, but I like it 🧴. The Seville oranges from the trees are a nice surprise, too 🍊. All in all, it's a complex one, but I'm enjoying the ride 🎢! 🥃

First sniff hits me with Barbour grease and a whiff of coal tar, almost like old ropes dipped in seawater. 🥃 On the palate there's a tight, highly focused burst of raw rhubarb and lemon, a little medicinal again – think mercurochrome and a hint of Seville oranges from the trees. It’s sweeter than expected, with a grassy grittiness and a crunch of unripe olives. The finish is long, leaving a millimetric drop of brine and a touch of arnica. Feels easier to sip than I thought, proper excellent dram. 🌊

Took a sip and immediately got this hit of seawater, proper briny stuff, like licking a rock by the coast. Then there's this medicinal side – think iodine, maybe a touch of Barbour grease and mercurochrome, the sort of thing that reminds you of a first aid kit. The smoke's rubbery, almost like burnt ropes, and the peat from a Bunnahabhain-style dram gives it this tight, focused kick. Lemon and Seville oranges come through sharp, with raw rhubarb adding a tart edge. It’s extremely compact on the palate, a wee tad simplistic but in a good way. The finish is long, leaving this dusty trail of coal tar and old ropes, with a hint of menthol and arnica. Crunchy, unripe olives and celeriac in brine linger, like some embrocation salve. Sweet? A bit, but balances well. Excellent, really – feels like a WIP that’s nailed it. Charming label, too. 🌊🪨🔥

First sip hits with this huge iodine punch, like licking a bandage left in seawater. There’s a medicinal side that’s not unpleasant, think Barbour grease and coal tar, but it’s easier to sip than it looks. The smoke from the peated Bunnahabhain comes through, all tar and seaweed, with a wee tad simplistic sweetness underneath. A touch of Seville orange cuts through, sharp and fresh, while celeriac in brine lingers earthy. Not sure if it’s the straw color or the label, but it’s got this charming, old-ropes sort of vibe. The finish is long, though, with a rubbbery smoke that’s oddly satisfying 🥃

Blimey, that’s a proper old-school one, innit? Tar and smoke first off, like a dockyard in a glass. Then there’s that medicinal whiff—arnica, bandages, bit like the doc’s surgery. Grassy, gritty, with a salty tang of seawater. Little menthol kick at the end, almost like crunching unripe olives. Bit sweet underneath, but still tight and punchy. Label’s lovely though 😅
