Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

The nose was fantastic – deep gold, very lovely, like chestnut honey and brownies with a hint of tea at the Balmoral. On the palate, it was the strongest yet, but old age started to show a wee bit, not too dusty though. Much better than I expected, with Big cinnamon and walnut cake dancing around, crunching some pine needle in the background. The finish was long, full of oak spices and that most balsamic kick, all in keeping with the nose. Definitely word for word a proper dram – cakes everywhere, literally! 🥃

Right, poured a dram of this deep gold beauty tonight. 🥃 The nose was fantastic – absolutely spot on for a good evening in. I got waves of the best of honeys, with some chestnut honey depth, and then rich brownies fresh from the oven. There was a lovely balsamic note too, all in keeping with the nose. Tasted it, and it was Very lovely indeed. It's like having a piece of walnut cake and a bit of toasty bread. The old age started to show a wee bit on the palate, but in a good, comforting way, with many more oak spices coming through. Found myself thinking of crunching some pine needle, in a wintery sort of way. A little tea-ish as well, made me think of strong green tea, or even tea at the Balmoral. The finish was long, with cakes everywhere and that Big cinnamon sticking around. Much better than I expected! A proper treat. 😄

I was having a dram last evening, and I could tell the old age started to show a wee bit on the palate – it was lovely, like rich brownies, much less dusty than some I've tried. Very lovely overall. The strongest hit was a little tea-ish, think strong green tea, almost like sipping tea at the Balmoral. It turned most balsamic towards the end, with many more oak spices coming through. All in keeping with the nose, and there was this nice walnut cake vibe too. 😊

Poured a dram after dinner, deep gold colour in the glass — really inviting. Nose is lovely, all sorts going on. Got this chestnut honey thing, the best of honeys honestly. Some toasty notes, like walnut cake fresh from the oven. There's a most balsamic quality to it too, almost like crunching some pine needle if that makes sense 😄 Took a sip and it's all in keeping with the nose, which is always nice when that happens. A little tea-ish actually, reminded me of strong green tea or maybe tea at the Balmoral — that fancy kind with cakes everywhere. Big cinnamon kicks in, and many more oak spices than I expected. You can tell the old age started to show a wee bit on the palate, which I don't mind at all. The finish is long. Really long. The strongest impression that lingers is that walnut cake and some assorted beverages vibe — bit of brownies too, oddly enough. Much less dusty than some older drams I've tried, which makes it much better in my book. Very lovely stuff overall. Might just have another one 🥃

The deep gold colour was inviting right away. 🍯 Nose was fantastic – big walnut cake and chestnut honey hit me, with Big cinnamon, like having tea at the Balmoral so cozy. Tasting it, much better than I imagined! Cakes everywhere, think Brownies and toasts, with strong green tea coming through. Crunching some pine needle added a fresh edge. Many more oak spices were all in keeping with the nose, and the best of honeys shone. Long finish, and I noticed the old age started to show a wee bit on the palate, but it's the strongest in a gentle way. Much less dusty, just assorted beverages joy. Word for word, this is lovely. 😊
