Caperdonich Distillery, whose name derives from the Gaelic for 'secret well,' stood on the banks of the River Spey in Rothes, Speyside. Founded in 1897 by James Grant as 'Glen Grant #2,' it operated intermittently before its permanent closure in 2002 and eventual demolition in 2010. This 'lost distillery' remained steadfast in traditional production methods while others expanded, crafting a Speyside single malt characterized by delicate fruity notes, honeyed sweetness, and a distinctive waxy texture. Though the physical structure no longer exists, its legacy endures through rare independent bottlings highly prized by collectors. The remaining stocks, primarily matured in ex-bourbon casks, offer a glimpse into a bygone era of whisky making, with each bottle representing an increasingly scarce piece of Scotch whisky history. The legend of Lord Ross and his daughter's lover adds an air of romantic mystery to this already enigmatic distillery's story.

Hada dram earlier and got a wee whiff of fresh putty, then a lovely grassy earthiness with touches of citric peat. Sweet mushroom and fresh barley came through, plus a wee touch of aniseed. Notes of orange squash and fresh hazelnuts made it interesting, and there was a hint of sunflower oil. Less pears than usual, but fresh nuts and a tad more complex finish. Good ale vibe, medium finish, very good overall 😊

Just had a dram and was instantly hit by those wee whiffs of fresh putty mixed with fresh barley – it feels like walking through a dewy field right after a light rain. There's a tiny touch of aniseed that makes it a tad unusual, but it settles nicely into short notes of almonds and fresh hazelnuts, almost like a good ale with a nutty twist. The sunflower oil hint keeps it quite fresh, while the touches of citric peat add a subtle zing. A bit more complex than I expected, with vanilla rounding it all off. Medium finish, leaving a gentle reminder of that fresh, grassy vibe. 😊

Nose is quite inviting – first thing I get is this fresh almond and vanilla sweetness, like a good marzipan. Then it opens up a bit, definitely a tad unusual... wee whiffs of something like fresh putty? Interesting. Underneath there's a lovely grassy earthiness coming through, maybe a touch of sweet mushroom if you really go looking for it. Palate is rather complex, actually. Those fresh hazelnuts are right there, along with notes of orange squash – the proper squash, not fizzy. It's differently fruity than the nose suggested, less pear, more like stone fruits gone by. There's a wee touch of aniseed that pops in and out. Medium finish, keeps that fresh barley and nutty character going. Quite fresh overall, really. A good ale of a whisky, one that makes you think. 🙂

Nose has a wee touch of aniseed and these fresh nuts, like hazelnuts or almonds. First sip brings lovely grassy earthiness mixed with touches of citric peat. Then it shifts to something differently fruity, almost like orange squash but not sweet. A tad more complex than some, and the finish is medium. It’s interesting, very good in a quiet way. 🌰

Just had a dram and it's rather complex with a lovely grassy earthiness. Reminds me of good ale, actually. The finish is medium, with some touches of citric peat and vanilla. I get fresh nuts, like almonds and hazelnuts, straight from the trees. There's notes of orange squash and a sweet mushroom vibe. Quite fresh overall, with wee whiffs of fresh putty and sunflower oil. It's differently fruity, and very good! 😊
