In 2019, Macduff distillery maintained identical working hours and weekly mashing batches as the previous year, yet production decreased by nearly 65%. This phenomenon wasn't unique to Macduff—all distilleries faced similar challenges. The primary cause was a poor harvest of Concerto, the main barley variety used for whisky production. Compounding the issue, whisky distilleries typically require raw barley with low nitrogen content, but the previous year's crop exhibited elevated nitrogen levels, which ultimately impacts whisky yield. Typically, one ton of malted barley yields 410-415 liters of new make spirit. However, affected by the poor barley harvest and increased nitrogen content, the distillery's per-ton output decreased by 65-10 liters. While production volume isn't the sole determinant of whisky quality, this impact is significant for large-scale whisky distilleries. Barley suppliers, farmers, and distilleries continuously seek superior barley varieties. Optic was favored for over two decades; subsequently, Concerto gained popularity. Nowadays, each new barley variety seems to have a short lifecycle before enthusiasm shifts to the next. Currently, Laureate barley has entered the spotlight. Macduff is equipped with a 6.75-ton stainless steel semi-lauter mash tun and nine stainless steel fermentation tanks (29,800 liters) with a fermentation period of 55 hours. Additionally, the distillery features a unique distillation setup comprising five stills—two wash stills and three spirit stills. The lyne arms on four stills are uniquely curved, with one wash still featuring a U-shaped lyne arm, making the configuration more suitable for the stillhouse space. In 2019, the distillery mashed 26 batches weekly, operating 48 weeks per year, achieving a new make spirit output of 3.26 million liters. Since 2015, the distillery's core range has been marketed under The Deveron brand, consisting of 10-year-old (France exclusive), 12-year-old, and 18-year-old expressions. In 2013, Macduff launched its first duty-free limited editions under the Glen Deveron label, including 16-year-old, 20-year-old, and 30-year-old bottlings.

This dram’s got a good age for a malt – solid, not too young. The nose hits you with coconut and pineapples, sweet and fresh, like a tropical breeze. There's a dollop of lightish acacia honey too, and the oak’s doing its thing, though it’s a bit chaotic, like fresh wood and some vegetal notes wrestling in the glass. On the palate, it’s pretty nice at first – vanilla, coconut, a medium body. But then the oak gets a bit sour and soapy, leaving this weird veggie-root aftertaste that’s not quite right. It’s nice for a while, but by the end, you’re wondering if they’re still getting better stuff these days. 😕

Had a sip and a dollop of lightish acacia honey bubbled up, then a sharp, sour hit that felt a little difficult to mellow. Down the line you get a touch of pineapples, a touch of coconut, and one of those soft, warm, vanilla-ish vibes you only see after a bit of rejuvenated US oak. The oak flows out in a very disorderly fashion – feels sorta cardboardy, almost soapy, but I still find it pretty nice. I’ve got a weird sense that Douglas Laing would bottle something like this; I hope DL are having better stuff these days. It’s medium, I’m not sure if it’s pure earth-and-vegetable soup or something more complex, but it’s nice for a while and feels like good age for a malt whisky – not too bitterish, not too sweet. Cheers. 🍹

This is a 25-year-old dram that’s got a good age for malt whisky – you can tell it’s been sitting around a while. The nose hits you with something a bit sour and soapy, which feels strange at first, like licking a pinecone or getting a whiff of vegetable soup. There’s a dollop of lightish acacia honey keeping things sweet, though, and a hint of coconut that makes me think of tropical holidays gone wrong. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with a bitterish edge and vegetal notes – maybe carrots and parsnips boiled down into the oak? The fresh wood and oak are coming out in a very disorderly fashion, like someone’s shoved all the barrels into a blender. It’s pretty nice, but a little difficult to pin down, and the flavors hang around for a nice while. Not sure what to make of it, but I’d sip it again if I had to. 🥃

Prettynice light gold colour, smells like fresh wood and vanilla with a whiff of rejuvenated US oak that feels a bit soapy. First sip is a little difficult – sour, cardboardy notes mingle with a dollop of lightish acacia honey and a hint of vegetable soup, then pineapples pop up before the oak comes out in a very disorderly fashion. It’s nice for a while, but finishes bitterish, leaving me thinking it’s a good age for malt whisky at 25, though I hope they are having better stuff these days and it’s strange that this would have been bottled. 🥃

Ah, this one's a proper mix of things. The nose starts with some sweet vanilla and coconut, maybe a touch of pineapple, but then there's this bitterish kick that makes it a bit tricky to get into. The oak's all over the place, fresh wood and vegetal notes like a bowl of vegetable soup sneaking in. Medium-bodied, with a 25-year age that feels like a good age for malt whisky, but the soapy edge and that strange, rooty depth make it a bit... hmm. Not bad, pretty nice for a while, but I reckon DL might've bottled some odd casks here. Still, a curious dram to ponder over. 🥃
