In 2019, Macduff distillery maintained identical working hours and weekly mashing batches as the previous year, yet production decreased by nearly 65%. This phenomenon wasn't unique to Macduff—all distilleries faced similar challenges. The primary cause was a poor harvest of Concerto, the main barley variety used for whisky production. Compounding the issue, whisky distilleries typically require raw barley with low nitrogen content, but the previous year's crop exhibited elevated nitrogen levels, which ultimately impacts whisky yield. Typically, one ton of malted barley yields 410-415 liters of new make spirit. However, affected by the poor barley harvest and increased nitrogen content, the distillery's per-ton output decreased by 65-10 liters. While production volume isn't the sole determinant of whisky quality, this impact is significant for large-scale whisky distilleries. Barley suppliers, farmers, and distilleries continuously seek superior barley varieties. Optic was favored for over two decades; subsequently, Concerto gained popularity. Nowadays, each new barley variety seems to have a short lifecycle before enthusiasm shifts to the next. Currently, Laureate barley has entered the spotlight. Macduff is equipped with a 6.75-ton stainless steel semi-lauter mash tun and nine stainless steel fermentation tanks (29,800 liters) with a fermentation period of 55 hours. Additionally, the distillery features a unique distillation setup comprising five stills—two wash stills and three spirit stills. The lyne arms on four stills are uniquely curved, with one wash still featuring a U-shaped lyne arm, making the configuration more suitable for the stillhouse space. In 2019, the distillery mashed 26 batches weekly, operating 48 weeks per year, achieving a new make spirit output of 3.26 million liters. Since 2015, the distillery's core range has been marketed under The Deveron brand, consisting of 10-year-old (France exclusive), 12-year-old, and 18-year-old expressions. In 2013, Macduff launched its first duty-free limited editions under the Glen Deveron label, including 16-year-old, 20-year-old, and 30-year-old bottlings.

Pretty nice dram this, a solid age for a malt. The oak's coming through but in a slightly chaotic way – almost like chewing fresh wood planks 🤔 Gets me thinking of vegetable soup and roots, with a dollop of light acacia honey trying to sweeten things up. Rejuvenated US oak influence, some coconut and vanilla... then a whiff of pineapple creeps in. It’s interesting, a little difficult to pin down at first. Almost soapy in places, sour in others, with that bitter edge. Medium body, nice for a while, but not sure it fully convinces me. Would’ve fitted right in with those old Douglas Laing bottlings though. Definitely a "loco Macduff" feel to it. A fun curiosity, if a bit all over the place 🥃

Oof, that soapiness hits right away—like washing-up liquid left in the glass. Then a bitterish edge, almost like over-steeped tea, with a whiff of damp cardboard lurking behind. Not exactly unpleasant, but a bit of a puzzle. Then—whoosh—pineapple chunks and a dollop of that light acacia honey, sweet but not cloying. Fresh wood tries to shine through, though the oak’s gone a bit rogue, like it’s been stacked in the wrong order. Still, there’s something rejuvenated about it, like a well-worn cask got a second wind. Medium-bodied, light gold in the glass. A little tricky to pin down, but not bad at all. Hope they’ve got better barrels tucked away these days.

Well, this one's a bit of a mixed bag, innit? Light gold in the glass, which is nice, but it’s got this strange vegetal thing going on—like someone blended vegetable soup with a pineapple and a coconut. The nose starts off with some fresh wood and vanilla, then quickly shifts to something soapy and cardboardy. Bit of a sour tang hits the palate, and the oak’s all over the place, not quite sure what it’s doing. There’s a dollop of lightish acacia honey trying to sweeten things up, but it’s fighting a losing battle against the bitterish notes. Pretty nice for a while, but after 25 years, you’d hope for a bit more harmony. Douglas Laing would’ve probably bottled this, though—maybe he’d have sorted out that fresh wood chaos. Still, it’s a decent dram if you’re into the wild side. 🥃

Poured a glass, nice light gold colour. Hmm, 25 years they say, interesting. First impression... getting this vegetable soup vibe? Like boiled roots and veg, which is quite unusual. There's a bit of vanilla and pineapple hiding in there somewhere, but it's fighting with this soapy note and fresh wood that feels a bit all over the place. The oak seems to be coming through in a really chaotic way, like it can't decide what it wants to be. A tiny dollop of acacia honey sweetness tries to balance things out. Cardboard note sneaks in too. It's nice for a while, honestly, but then it just gets a bit muddled. Medium bodied, nothing too heavy. Not my favourite pour of the evening tbh 😅 but not terrible either. Just one of those weird ones that keeps you guessing.

Light gold in the glass, kinda inviting. Nose is interesting – coconut and a dollop of lightish acacia honey at first, then some fresh wood comes through. Got a bit of that rejuvenated US oak vibe, I think. Palate is medium. Initially Pretty nice, with pineapples popping up strangely. Then it shifts – vegetables and roots, almost like a light vegetable soup. A little difficult to pin down, honestly. Kinda loco. Soapy note lingers a bit in the finish. Not bad for a 25 year old, good age for malt whisky. Nice for a while, but leaves me wondering… I hope they’re having better stuff these days. 🤔
