Kilchoman Distillery, established in 2005 by Anthony Wills, held the distinction of being Islay's first new distillery in 124 years and the industry's 'newcomer' until Ardnahoe joined the island's whisky community in late 2018. While Malt Mill (1908) operated within Lagavulin's premises, it was not an independent distillery as it shared Lagavulin's mash tuns. Kilchoman's success with its single malt whisky prompted a major expansion that doubled production capacity. The new still room, commissioned in April 2019, features two 1.2-ton stainless steel semi-lauter mash tuns, twelve 6,000-liter stainless steel washbacks with a 90-hour fermentation period, and two sets of stills. Production reached 220,000 liters in 2018, with projections of 300,000 liters for 2019. The distillery maintains traditional floor malting for 30% of its requirements, including 20 PPM peated malt, while sourcing the remaining 70% from Port Ellen Maltings, which includes malts peated to 50 PPM. The core range comprises Machir Bay and Sanaig (launched 2016, matured in bourbon and oloroso sherry casks). Loch Gorm is the limited edition expression that is uniquely fully sherry-matured, crafted from 100% Islay-grown barley that is malted on-site. Special releases include the STR Cask (distilled May 2019, using 50 PPM peated malt, bottled at 50% ABV, matured in re-charred and re-toasted red wine casks) and a 9-year-old 2009 Vintage. The 2019 Feis Ile special edition is a vatting of 2007 bourbon cask and 2008 oloroso sherry cask whiskies. The portfolio is completed by travel retail exclusives Coull Point (UK market) and Saligo Bay (global market).

bloody lovely little dram this 🥃 first you get those gentler green olives, bit of classic chalk dust on the nose, then a proper boy scouts' campfire whiff with those ashes and a hint of barbecued marshmallows, weirdly palate's got brine-y oyster vibes, seawater, tad less profound than the big sherry bombs I usually neck but way more consensual for a weekday sip, and it's a narrower flavour profile too which is nice sweetness creeps in like jelly babies, lemons and grapefruits cut through, even a little hint of red ones it's rounder, medium body, soft like wool on the finish, with a bit of straw and hessian, ultra-clean, no weird harsh bits at all proper excellent stuff for slobbing in front of the telly with some seafood innit 🍕

Nose is proper briny, like standing by the sea with a straw in hand, saline and seaweed all over. Hints of jelly babies and sweetness bubble up, almost like boy scouts marshmallow s'mores left out too long. Palate's medium, gentler and rounder than expected—less intense than oysters but more consensual, if that makes sense. Citrus from grapefruits and lemons cuts through, but there's this tad less profound depth, cleaner than a well-worn hessian sack. Finish is brine-y, with a whisper of seawater and green olives, leaving me craving oysters and proper pub crisps. Ashy undertones linger, but it's all rather straightforward, like a classic chalk drawing of a dram. Solid one for a quiet evening. 🥃

Right, had a lovely dram last night – chalk and a nice sweetness right off the bat, with this intriguing seafood and hessian texture underneath. They mentioned it was from 42 barrels plus 3 butts, which explains that lovely brine and grapefruit zing 💪. It’s got a cleaner, almost ashes and wool kind of depth, but in a good way – like a memory of boy scouts by a campfire, you know? The red ones in the mix make it excellent, though the finish feels a tad narrower and less profound than I expected. Ultra-clean on the end though, with just lemons, straw, and a final hint of oysters. Medium finish. A proper nice one. 🥃

Right, this one's a proper coastal dram. Got that classic chalk hit straight away, like licking a bit of seaside rock. Then the brine kicks in, proper oyster-shell vibes, makes me think of eating seafood on a windy harbour wall. 🌊 There's a lovely sweetness underneath though, almost like jelly babies melting on your tongue, with a bit of straw and hessian in the background. Reminds me of boy scouts camping trips for some reason, maybe the wool jumper smell mixed with barbecued marshmallows round a fire. The grapefruit and lemon notes keep it ultra-clean, really fresh and zesty. It's gentler and rounder than some I've had, more consensual if that makes sense, not trying to knock you sideways. A tad less profound maybe, but honestly? Excellent one for a quiet evening. The green olives and that brine-y finish just linger nicely. Proper decent stuff. 🥃

Just had a dram that felt like a walk on the beach – a hint of brine and seawater, with a soft wool‑like roundness. There's a touch of lemon zest and grapefruts brightness, plus a sweet note reminiscent of jelly babies and barbecued marshmallows. A faint chalky minerality pops up, like classic chalk underfoot, and a whisper of ashes in the finish. Overall it’s gentle, more consensual than bold, but still nicely medium‑bodied. 😌
