Caperdonich Distillery, whose name derives from the Gaelic for 'secret well,' stood on the banks of the River Spey in Rothes, Speyside. Founded in 1897 by James Grant as 'Glen Grant #2,' it operated intermittently before its permanent closure in 2002 and eventual demolition in 2010. This 'lost distillery' remained steadfast in traditional production methods while others expanded, crafting a Speyside single malt characterized by delicate fruity notes, honeyed sweetness, and a distinctive waxy texture. Though the physical structure no longer exists, its legacy endures through rare independent bottlings highly prized by collectors. The remaining stocks, primarily matured in ex-bourbon casks, offer a glimpse into a bygone era of whisky making, with each bottle representing an increasingly scarce piece of Scotch whisky history. The legend of Lord Ross and his daughter's lover adds an air of romantic mystery to this already enigmatic distillery's story.

Right, popped open a random bottle the other night and blimey, what a proper ride 🥃 First hit is that sharp seawater and saline whack, then straight into that fuel oil tang and the metallic zing of old copper and brass pennies mixed with that weird metal polish tang you get from old cutlery, the sort you dig out of your coat pocket after a trip to the pub. There’s this weirdly cozy Maggi and lovage note mixed with salted liquorice, a little rubber/bakelite whiff and faint new tyres hit too, plus a little tar twang and a faint sense of peat? Ends with a bright citron liqueur pop, a tiny hint of kirsch-like fruit and that warm copper gold glow, bloody charming, very good for watching the telly with no plans.

First sip, got this interesting tar and rubber thing going on - like new bakelite mixed with a bit of Maggi sauce, oddly nostalgic actually. Then there's this salty, saline quality that reminds me of old copper coins you'd find in a drawer. The finish is really long, with some lovely bergamot and lime coming through. There's a subtle kirsch-like sweetness hiding underneath, and that peat smoke is there but not overwhelming. Color's this gorgeous copper gold in the glass. Honestly quite enjoyed it - a proper in-cask blend with character. Would happily pour another on a cold evening. 😊

Just had a dram that feels like a salty seaside breeze – brine and seawater up front, a squeeze of lime and a whiff of bergamots lifting it, then a curious fuel oil note that reminds me of fresh tar on a dock. There's a lovage/herbal whisper underneath, with a metallic flash of copper and brass coins, and a warm copper‑gold glow that lingers long. Sense of peat is subtle, just enough to give depth, and the in‑cask blend makes it feel very good overall. 🥃

Poured a glass last night and honestly, this one's a bit of a wild ride. The colour caught my eye straight away — proper copper gold, like old coins you'd find in your grandad's drawer. First thing I got on the nose was this briny, salty kick, almost like standing by the harbour on a windy day. Then there's something rubbery, reminds me of new tyres or old bakelite phones — sounds odd but it works somehow. A bit of bergamot and lime lurking in the back too, quite unexpected. On the palate it's got that seawater salinity hit, mixed with something metallic like copper and brass coins. There's a slight kirsch-like sweetness trying to push through but the tar and fuel oil notes keep dragging it back into this darker, smokier territory. Definitely getting a sense of peat, though not overwhelming — just enough to remind you it's there. The finish has this salted liquorice thing going on with a touch of metal polish, which honestly I quite fancy. It lingers nicely. Very good stuff overall, feels like it's been sitting in the cask getting properly interesting. Not for everyone I reckon, but if you're into those coastal, industrial-leaning drams — yeah, this'll do the job nicely 🥃

Poured this and it's got a proper copper gold colour, quite pretty in the glass. On the nose, I get this lovely citron liqueur sweetness mixed with salted liquorice – that's a bit of a surprise, but nice. There's lime in there too, and something sort of metallic, like smelling a handful of copper and brass coins. It's really charming, honestly. A sip in, and there's this savoury, herbal note – maybe lovage? – along with something reminiscent of Maggi seasoning. Then comes a kirsch-like fruitiness and bergamots. The palate is very good, saline and mineral. It's the finish that stands out though. Really long, with those industrial notes coming through: new tyres, a touch of metal polish, a clear sense of peat. It reminds me of seawater, tar, and brine, with a distinct fuel oil and rubber/bakelite character lingering. Quite the experience. 👃🥃
