Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Got my hands on a dram that's become proper legendary among those who really know their stuff. You know the type - you hear whispers about it from mates who've spotted bottles tucked away in those wee shops across the continent, Paris or Rome maybe. Poured it neat, and honestly... it just felt special. That kind of smoky depth that reminds you why you got into whisky in the first place. There's something almost melancholy about it, knowing the distillery's been silent for decades. 🥃 Sipped it slowly, and it was like tasting a piece of history. Rich, layered, with this long finish that just hangs around. You get why certain bottles become the holy grail for collectors. Had that satisfying feeling of finally ticking something off the wish list. Worth every penny.

Just had a dram, and it's lovely. The color is full gold, and it feels tight on the palate. Very good overall. I get hints of walnuts and cinnamon, with some toasted brown bread. Spicy kick, with earthy sherriness – reminds me of those bodegas in Jerez. It's spicier as it goes, almost like old engine oil. The dough and walnut cake notes come through, excellent dry and spicy sherry finish. Leather and dry on the tongue, with a rather long aftertaste. Whiffs of fumes and a touch of tar add to the complexity. There's a hint of liquorice too. 🥃

First sip — that's quality sherry right there. Really transports you to 'the triangle', you know? Whiffs of fumes come up, like an old engine warming up. Gets a touch of both leather and leatherette, with that earthy sherriness underneath. More engine oil on the second dram, feels rather tight though. A bit like dough, or halva — even has that couscous texture. Rather on liquorice at first, then it shifts. After a minute, walnut cake and walnuts come through. Rather long spicier yet on the finish. Excellent dry and spicy sherry character — makes you think of bodegas in Jerez. Notes of tar, and delicate notes of toasted brown bread. It's dry, with rather a lot of cinnamon. Full gold in the glass, pairs nicely with cigars if you have them. Very spicy, overall very good. 😊

I just had a glass of this whisky. First off, walnuts and a hint of engine oil – like an old engine room. It's dry and earthy, with sherriness that reminds me of bodegas in Jerez. The taste starts with liquorice, then gets spicier and lasts long. Full gold color, and it transports you to 'the triangle' – whiffs of fumes, cigars, the lot. There's halva, walnut cake, and even couscous notes. Very good indeed. 😊

Pouring this one, it’s a proper deep gold 🥃 First thing I get on the nose is like being in an old engine room… a bit of tar and engine oil, but then it shifts into these lovely dried fruits and nuts from the sherry casks. Honestly, reminds me of the bodegas in Jerez, that excellent dry and spicy sherry character. It’s got a lovely weight to it, quite oily. The taste follows through – toasted brown bread, walnuts, even a bit of walnut cake. There’s a definite spicy kick, cinnamon and liquorice coming through, balanced by a hint of halva. A few whiffs of fumes linger in the background, adding to that industrial, old-school feel. The finish is long, a bit leathery and nutty. Very good indeed 👍
