In just the past 5 years, visitor numbers to Scotch whisky distilleries have nearly doubled. In 2018, approximately 2 million people visited distilleries to learn more about Scotch whisky. One might think that reputation and proximity to main roads are prerequisites for attracting large numbers of visitors, but this is not the case. Among the 5 distilleries most popular with visitors, 3 are on islands—Arran, Skye, and Harris. Perhaps most surprising is Harris distillery on the remote Outer Hebrides, which attracted over 90,000 visitors in 2018, and this was only its third year of operation! Blair Athol Distillery, meanwhile, has consistently benefited from traffic on the A9 highway heading north from Edinburgh to the Highlands. The distillery is the most visited of all Diageo distilleries, receiving 89,000 visitors in 2018. In the past year, the distillery has also developed a new feature: converting a disused Clynelish mashtun into a whisky tasting bar! Blair Athol is the spiritual home of Bell's blended whisky. The connection was established in 1896 when Bell was just starting out, and this relationship became even closer when Bell purchased the distillery in 1933. Arthur Bell & Sons, the creators of the Bell's brand, remained an independent family business far longer than most Scottish traditional family enterprises, only being acquired by Guinness in 1985 before merging into Diageo Group. The distillery's equipment includes an 8.2-ton semi-lauter mashtun, 6 stainless steel washbacks, and 2 stills. Most of the spirit produced for Bell's matures in bourbon casks, with the remainder in sherry casks. Over the past few years, the distillery has operated 5 days a week, producing 12 mashes weekly, which translates to approximately 2 million liters of new make spirit. Blair Athol also employs both short (46 hours) and long (104 hours) fermentation times. Due to the incorporation of a cloudy wort, the new make spirit carries distinct nutty and malty flavors. The only official regular bottling is a 12-year-old expression in the Flora & Fauna series. Additionally, in autumn 2017, a 23-year-old expression matured in European oak sherry casks was released as part of Diageo's Special Releases series.

Just poured a dram, bright amber in the glass. First sniff brings apricot jam and a hint of peppery greenness, then a whiff of brioche and liquid panettone vibes. On the palate it’s thick(ish) with fudge‑y sweetness, raisins and a touch of cloves, finishing with a marmalade zing that swims very well. Feels like a slice of cake dipped in tea ☕️.

Just had a dram that reminded me of fresh brioche with a hint of apricot jam instead of orange marmalade, a little fudge‑y sweetness and a touch of raw malt. The palate feels long and slightly thickish, with peppery marmalade and cloves dancing like playing first saxophone in a bakery. Pale gold in the glass, bright and almost zesty, with raisins and sugar‑coated peanuts sneaking in. Feels like liquid panettone meets liquid kugelhopf – cakey, malty cakes and a swirl of brownies. Swims very well, nice and smooth. 🥃

This one’s a right proper dram – pale gold and bright as a summer morning. Takes a sniff and it’s like someone’s playing first saxophone in the room, smooth but with a bit of bite. The taste? Proper challenging, in a good way. There’s this peppery marmalade tang that lingers, not too shy about it. Swims very well, mind, coats the gums with something rich, almost zesty. Reminds me of liquid panettone or malty cakes, but with a touch of raw malt that keeps it grounded. Long and slightly thick(ish) on the finish, like a fudge-y hug with a spoonful of apricot jam instead of orange. Sweet, but not cloying – more like a synthesis of all the previous ones, dancing about on the tongue. A drop of honey in there too, subtle but present. Bit of a head-scratcher, this one, but I’m not complaining.

First sip and it's this pale gold colour, reminds me of those sugar-coated peanuts you get at fairs. There's a proper fudge-y richness, almost like malty cakes soaked in honey. The apricot jam instead of orange gives it this bright, slightly zesty kick, not too overpowering. Then there's the peppery marmalade and cloves, adding a bit of spice. It's long and slightly thick(ish) on the finish, like liquid panettone with all the raisin and pastry bits. Challenging in a good way, like it's got all these flavors playing together without being messy. Definitely one for sipping slow, let it develop. 🥃

This one's got a lovely honey and sugar-coated peanuts sweetness right off the bat. It's bright and zesty too, almost like a peppery marmalade. Really reminds me of a liquid kugelhopf or some malty pastries fresh from the oven 🍰. There's a slight thickness to it, and it's definitely got that raw malt character. The peppery greenness and cloves come through, making it a bit challenging at times, but in a good way. It's like a sip of apricot jam and raisins mixed together. Finishes long and fudge-y. A proper dessert dram.
