In just the past 5 years, visitor numbers to Scotch whisky distilleries have nearly doubled. In 2018, approximately 2 million people visited distilleries to learn more about Scotch whisky. One might think that reputation and proximity to main roads are prerequisites for attracting large numbers of visitors, but this is not the case. Among the 5 distilleries most popular with visitors, 3 are on islands—Arran, Skye, and Harris. Perhaps most surprising is Harris distillery on the remote Outer Hebrides, which attracted over 90,000 visitors in 2018, and this was only its third year of operation! Blair Athol Distillery, meanwhile, has consistently benefited from traffic on the A9 highway heading north from Edinburgh to the Highlands. The distillery is the most visited of all Diageo distilleries, receiving 89,000 visitors in 2018. In the past year, the distillery has also developed a new feature: converting a disused Clynelish mashtun into a whisky tasting bar! Blair Athol is the spiritual home of Bell's blended whisky. The connection was established in 1896 when Bell was just starting out, and this relationship became even closer when Bell purchased the distillery in 1933. Arthur Bell & Sons, the creators of the Bell's brand, remained an independent family business far longer than most Scottish traditional family enterprises, only being acquired by Guinness in 1985 before merging into Diageo Group. The distillery's equipment includes an 8.2-ton semi-lauter mashtun, 6 stainless steel washbacks, and 2 stills. Most of the spirit produced for Bell's matures in bourbon casks, with the remainder in sherry casks. Over the past few years, the distillery has operated 5 days a week, producing 12 mashes weekly, which translates to approximately 2 million liters of new make spirit. Blair Athol also employs both short (46 hours) and long (104 hours) fermentation times. Due to the incorporation of a cloudy wort, the new make spirit carries distinct nutty and malty flavors. The only official regular bottling is a 12-year-old expression in the Flora & Fauna series. Additionally, in autumn 2017, a 23-year-old expression matured in European oak sherry casks was released as part of Diageo's Special Releases series.

Had a dram tonight, pale gold in the glass 🥃 First sip hits orange juice and lemon blossom honey, then a rounder malt feel with fresh brioche and lemon curd. A wee touch of bourbonness from the barrel, dried tropical fruits and marmalade swirl in. Feels less vivacious, more pastry‑like, like green earl grey with guava and very ripe plums, a drop of mead, and that feeling of mirabelle eau‑de‑vie. Perfect balance, unquestionably unquestionable. 😊

This dram's got a proper lovely start – think lemon curd meets a wee touch of citrusness, not too sharp though, more like a mellow orange juice vibe. There's a hint of green earl grey in the background, giving it that earthy sweetness, and a subtle mirabelle eau-de-vie note that's dead elegant. It's rounded and smooth, with dried tropical fruits and ripe plums dancing about, almost like biting into a very ripe plum with a splash of marmalade. The balance is spot on – not vivacious, but comforting, like a perfectly polite Jaffa cake in liquid form. A bit of bourbonness sneaks in, along with some malt, making it feel richer, less tart than expected. The finish is this soft, pale gold glow, with a whisper of guava and a dried fruits mix lingering. Proper well-polished, if you ask me.

Pale gold in the glass, this one’s got a lovely fresh brioche and orange juice nose, with a wee touch of bourbonness lingering in the background. The palate’s rounder and more pastry-like than I expected—think Lemon curd and lemon blossom honey dancing with dried tropical fruits and pears. There’s a hint of green earl grey tea, but it’s not overpowering. Less tart, thankfully, and the dried fruits mix and very ripe plums give it a rich, almost cake-iness depth. Nuts and malt pop through, grounded by a subtle barrel char. It’s unquestionably unquestionable in its Great balance, like a perfect Jaffa cake soaked in mirabelle eau-de-vie. Smooth, not vivacious, but satisfying—fatigue melts away after a dram or two. 🥃

This dram hits the nose first with a proper balance—like someone's spilled a jar of marmalade and fresh brioche crumbs right there. It's rather fruitier than I expected, all dried tropical fruits and very ripe plums dancing about, but thankfully less tart than that time I tried orange juice with my whisky by accident. There's a sort of "better polished cake-iness" to it, reminds me of those Jaffa cakes my gran used to hide in her biscuit tin. A few drops of mead and a whisper of mirabelle eau-de-vie give it an unquestionably unquestionable warmth, while the lemon blossom honey and green earl grey add this strange, lovely citrusness that's not quite lemon curd but not far off. Medium-bodied, rounder on the tongue, with guavas and a dried fruits mix that's more sophisticated than your average fruit salad. Less vivacious than some, but the finish lingers like a half-finished cup of tea—can imagine sipping this with a slice of Dakatine and feeling rather smug about it all. 🥃
