In just the past 5 years, visitor numbers to Scotch whisky distilleries have nearly doubled. In 2018, approximately 2 million people visited distilleries to learn more about Scotch whisky. One might think that reputation and proximity to main roads are prerequisites for attracting large numbers of visitors, but this is not the case. Among the 5 distilleries most popular with visitors, 3 are on islands—Arran, Skye, and Harris. Perhaps most surprising is Harris distillery on the remote Outer Hebrides, which attracted over 90,000 visitors in 2018, and this was only its third year of operation! Blair Athol Distillery, meanwhile, has consistently benefited from traffic on the A9 highway heading north from Edinburgh to the Highlands. The distillery is the most visited of all Diageo distilleries, receiving 89,000 visitors in 2018. In the past year, the distillery has also developed a new feature: converting a disused Clynelish mashtun into a whisky tasting bar! Blair Athol is the spiritual home of Bell's blended whisky. The connection was established in 1896 when Bell was just starting out, and this relationship became even closer when Bell purchased the distillery in 1933. Arthur Bell & Sons, the creators of the Bell's brand, remained an independent family business far longer than most Scottish traditional family enterprises, only being acquired by Guinness in 1985 before merging into Diageo Group. The distillery's equipment includes an 8.2-ton semi-lauter mashtun, 6 stainless steel washbacks, and 2 stills. Most of the spirit produced for Bell's matures in bourbon casks, with the remainder in sherry casks. Over the past few years, the distillery has operated 5 days a week, producing 12 mashes weekly, which translates to approximately 2 million liters of new make spirit. Blair Athol also employs both short (46 hours) and long (104 hours) fermentation times. Due to the incorporation of a cloudy wort, the new make spirit carries distinct nutty and malty flavors. The only official regular bottling is a 12-year-old expression in the Flora & Fauna series. Additionally, in autumn 2017, a 23-year-old expression matured in European oak sherry casks was released as part of Diageo's Special Releases series.

Color oro pálido, muy brillante. Me recuerda a pastelitos orientales, baklavas y cabello de ángel, pero con un lado ceroso y herbal, casi a perejil, resina de pino y un puntito mentolado. Luego me lleva a libros viejos y a un paseo por bosque húmedo con setas 🍄. Tiene un amargor bien puesto, raro pero bonito, y el final queda perfecto, largo y tranquilo.

Qué color anbar más chulo tiene en la copa. Al olerlo me vino a la mente un panettone recién salido del horno, puro aroma a bolleria y brioche tostado con un chorrito de sirope de arce por encima 🥞. Está súper bueno. Al tomarlo es súper rico, me sabe a pan de jengibre muy especiado y frutos secos tostados. Tiene una textura muy de fudge cremoso, lo cual no es nada malo jaja. Lo curioso es que mantiene muchisima ligereza, todo fluye en una sintonía perfecta. Te deja un sabor súper largo al final. Sinceramente, ¡me parece bastante perfecto! 🥃 Una maravilla para desconectar hoy.

¡Qué experiencia! Tomando este whisky, siento una riqueza increíble, como si todo estuviera en perfecta sincronización. Me trae a la mente el pan de jengibre más picante, con chorros de sirope de arce y un sabor muy tipo fudge. También hay nueces tostadas y ese toque de mermelado... es como un tazón tamaño Texas de palomitas de maíz caramelizadas con mantequilla 🍿. Bueno, un todo que es bastante perfecto. Hay una sensación graciosa y ligeramente retorcida de naranjas amargas, pero super bueno. Solo le echo de menos un poco más de ligereza, pero nada grave. 😊

¡Qué rico! Tiene un color ámbar precioso, como si le hubieran echado un chorrito de sirope de arce por encima. Al principio huelo naranjas amargas y algo de frutos secos tostados. Luego viene una golosina... ¿será mermelada? Sí, como algo muy goloso. Pero no se queda ahí, se pone más interesante. A mitad de copa, se vuelve más vivo y brillante, como un tarta recién hecha del horno. ¡Y qué sorpresa al final! Notas de panettone y jengibre picante, con uvas pasas quemaditas. El final es súper largo y satisfactorio. En resumen, ¡super bueno! 😋 No me canso de su complejidad.

Hoy me tomé un whisky que me dejó con ganas de más. Al verlo, tiene un tono ámbar precioso, como sol dorado. 😊 En boca, lo primero es un golpe de pan de jengibre picante, ¡pero no es algo malo! Se mezcla con algo mermelado, como si fuera una mermelada casera. Después, vienen notas de cítricos, naranjas amargas sobre todo, que lo hacen más brillante y ácido. 🍊 También hay un toque de palomitas con mantequilla caramelizada y frutos secos tostados. Todo está en perfecta sincronización. El final es largo, con recuerdos a toffee y fudge, como un pastel recién salido del horno, un panettone tal vez. ¡Es muy rico y bastante perfecto! En serio, ¡super good! 🤤
