In just the past 5 years, visitor numbers to Scotch whisky distilleries have nearly doubled. In 2018, approximately 2 million people visited distilleries to learn more about Scotch whisky. One might think that reputation and proximity to main roads are prerequisites for attracting large numbers of visitors, but this is not the case. Among the 5 distilleries most popular with visitors, 3 are on islands—Arran, Skye, and Harris. Perhaps most surprising is Harris distillery on the remote Outer Hebrides, which attracted over 90,000 visitors in 2018, and this was only its third year of operation! Blair Athol Distillery, meanwhile, has consistently benefited from traffic on the A9 highway heading north from Edinburgh to the Highlands. The distillery is the most visited of all Diageo distilleries, receiving 89,000 visitors in 2018. In the past year, the distillery has also developed a new feature: converting a disused Clynelish mashtun into a whisky tasting bar! Blair Athol is the spiritual home of Bell's blended whisky. The connection was established in 1896 when Bell was just starting out, and this relationship became even closer when Bell purchased the distillery in 1933. Arthur Bell & Sons, the creators of the Bell's brand, remained an independent family business far longer than most Scottish traditional family enterprises, only being acquired by Guinness in 1985 before merging into Diageo Group. The distillery's equipment includes an 8.2-ton semi-lauter mashtun, 6 stainless steel washbacks, and 2 stills. Most of the spirit produced for Bell's matures in bourbon casks, with the remainder in sherry casks. Over the past few years, the distillery has operated 5 days a week, producing 12 mashes weekly, which translates to approximately 2 million liters of new make spirit. Blair Athol also employs both short (46 hours) and long (104 hours) fermentation times. Due to the incorporation of a cloudy wort, the new make spirit carries distinct nutty and malty flavors. The only official regular bottling is a 12-year-old expression in the Flora & Fauna series. Additionally, in autumn 2017, a 23-year-old expression matured in European oak sherry casks was released as part of Diageo's Special Releases series.

Had a dram of whisky that burst with fresh herbs and a zing of green lemons, tart as lime, with a hint of mint and a soft roundness from the wood. Soft yellow peaches and a whisper of white pepper gave it a lovely, fruity lift, and the finish sent shivers down my spine. 😊

poured a wee dram after work yesterday, proper textbook fresh and citrusy malt whisky that innit? 🥃 Nose first hits you with bags of green lemons, even tarter than lime zing, wee hint of white pepper, then soft fresh herbs, mint and chives, weirdly a touch of little garlic but it’s not off at all? Taste is all fruity first, got awesome touches of honeydew melon, starfruits covered with custard, bits of tangerines, then that quiet refill wood and white wine softness comes through. Oddly reminds me of muesli with extra cider apples too, even the M&S assorted fruit sherbets just sweets vibe at the finish. So smooth, a little rounder than the old one I tried last month, that curious yet awesome herbal combo is just chef’s kiss. Much better than I thought it’d be, lovely little drop

🥃 Blimey, this one’s such a lovely surprise! First you get that fresh herbal whiff, a touch of chives even a little garlic, with a faint white pepper zing right behind it, then the medium body kicks in. Tarter than lime right off the bat, with little bursts of tangerine, plus that weirdly perfect combo of starfruit covered with custard, and even wee touches of honeydew melon popping through now and then? Then there’s this muesli, cider apple backbone, even a hint of white wine tang? It’s a little rounder than your usual tipple, that textbook fresh and citrusy malt hit just sends shivers into your spine, honest. Tastes like Breakfast for champions on a Sunday morning, no messing. 🍋

Had a dram this morning that felt like Breakfast for champions – fresh citrusy malt with bags of green lemons and a whisper of white pepper. There’s a little garlic note, like chives tossed in, and a sweet hint of honeydew melon that sends shivers into your spine. It finishes easy, with a muesli‑like bite, a splash of cider apple and mint, and the flavour of assorted fruit sherbets, a bit tarter than lime but nicely rounded. 🌿

Just poured a wee dram of this and mate, it literally sends shivers into your spine 🥶 It kicks off kinda like a crisp white wine, but then suddenly hits you with bags of green lemons that are somehow tarter than lime! Got a proper nice fruity side to it too—lots of yellow peaches and awsome touches of honeydew melon 🍈 Give it a minute and it gets a little rounder in the glass. The smell honestly reminds me of eating muesli in the morning, but mixed up with those M&S assorted fruit sherbets 🍬 There’s this curious yet awesome herbal combo happening as well... loads of fresh herbs, some mint, and wait for it, a little garlic? Sounds absolutly bonkers but it really works. 🧄 It's all resting on this quiet refill wood with a nice crack of white pepper. The whole experience is intense, kinda like having a band of bagpipers marching right across your tongue 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The finish is just lovely though, fading out into bruised cider apples and weirdly enough, starfruits covered with custard. Cracking stuff for a chilled evening! 🥃
