Braeval Distillery represents one of the most significant recent additions to the single malt Scotch whisky market. As the final distillery in Chivas Brothers' portfolio to transition from exclusive blending stock to official single malt releases, Braeval embodies the strategic shift toward premium aged expressions in the Speyside region. Located in the remote Braes of Glenlivet, Braeval is aptly named 'The Remote Distillery' in Chivas Brothers' prestigious 'The Secret Speyside Collection.' This isolation, south of Grantown-on-Spey and accessible only via the B9008 through Auchnarrow, echoes its historical role as an illicit distilling haven during the 18th and 19th centuries. Production capabilities include a 9-ton stainless steel full-lauter mash tun, 13 stainless steel washbacks with 70-hour fermentation, and a six-still setup comprising two wash stills with secondary condensers and four spirit stills. The distillery processes 26 mashes weekly, yielding 4.2 million liters of new make spirit annually. The inaugural 2017 visitor center exclusive was a 16-year-old cask strength expression. The 2019 global launch introduced three distinguished age-statement whiskies: a 25-year-old and 27-year-old both matured in American oak barrels at 48% ABV, and a 30-year-old hogshead-matured expression at 50.3% ABV. Initially duty-free exclusives, these expressions entered UK retail distribution in 2020, positioning Braeval as a luxury collectible within the single malt category.

Blimey, this 30 year old is such a pale gold first look, innit? Nose hits you with light peat, like that light-Ardmore level stuff, mixed with that coastal salty air, olive brine, little lemony tartness cutting through, plus some fresh grass notes, faint chalky mineral tang too. Got that soft sherry feeling, raisin hints, weissbeer-esque tang on the finish? Then there’s that weird medicinal candlewax whiff, almost like faint ointments, even a hint of ex-Laphroaig cask salt, y’know? Cost me 600 Euros, ridiculously expensive OBs but bloody very good, proper intriguing Braeval vibe with that subtle Brora-y edge. 🥃

Sipped it slow and the pale gold colour caught my eye – almost like a weissbier in a fancy glass. The first nose was a light peat smoke, just enough to remind me of a coastal walk, then a hint of candle‑wax and that medicinal bite you get from an old Laphroaig cask. On the palate the lemony tartness came right through, mingling with a touch of salt and olive brine, while a whisper of chalk and grass kept it fresh. There’s a subtle raisin sweetness and a sherry‑like depth that feels oddly comforting, like a good ointment on a sore finger. It’s 30 years old, costs a pretty ridiculous 600 Euros, but the whole experience feels worth every penny – very intriguing, very good, and oddly reminiscent of a breezy Braes afternoon. 😊

Picked up this 30-year-old dram the other day — cost me a small fortune, honestly 😅 First sip... wow. There's this chalky mineral thing going on, like licking a limestone wall (in a good way lol). Then comes this lovely weissbeer-ish wheaty sweetness that just melts into dried raisins and a proper sherry warmth. After a few minutes it opens up — fresh cut grass, lemons, a bit of lemony tartness that makes your mouth water. Then out of nowhere this faint medicinal edge creeps in, almost coastal salty. Really takes me back to those old closed distillery bottlings, you know the ones. The peat is gentle though, barely there — just a whisper of smoke in the background. Not aggressive at all. Blended together it's honestly very good, quite intriguing really. You'd never guess it was this old, it's still got so much life. But the price tag... 600 quid? 🤯 I mean, some of these official bottlings are just ridiculously expensive these days. Worth trying if you can find a sample, but I'd need to win the lottery to keep a bottle on the shelf 😂
