In just the past 5 years, visitor numbers to Scotch whisky distilleries have nearly doubled. In 2018, approximately 2 million people visited distilleries to learn more about Scotch whisky. One might think that reputation and proximity to main roads are prerequisites for attracting large numbers of visitors, but this is not the case. Among the 5 distilleries most popular with visitors, 3 are on islands—Arran, Skye, and Harris. Perhaps most surprising is Harris distillery on the remote Outer Hebrides, which attracted over 90,000 visitors in 2018, and this was only its third year of operation! Blair Athol Distillery, meanwhile, has consistently benefited from traffic on the A9 highway heading north from Edinburgh to the Highlands. The distillery is the most visited of all Diageo distilleries, receiving 89,000 visitors in 2018. In the past year, the distillery has also developed a new feature: converting a disused Clynelish mashtun into a whisky tasting bar! Blair Athol is the spiritual home of Bell's blended whisky. The connection was established in 1896 when Bell was just starting out, and this relationship became even closer when Bell purchased the distillery in 1933. Arthur Bell & Sons, the creators of the Bell's brand, remained an independent family business far longer than most Scottish traditional family enterprises, only being acquired by Guinness in 1985 before merging into Diageo Group. The distillery's equipment includes an 8.2-ton semi-lauter mashtun, 6 stainless steel washbacks, and 2 stills. Most of the spirit produced for Bell's matures in bourbon casks, with the remainder in sherry casks. Over the past few years, the distillery has operated 5 days a week, producing 12 mashes weekly, which translates to approximately 2 million liters of new make spirit. Blair Athol also employs both short (46 hours) and long (104 hours) fermentation times. Due to the incorporation of a cloudy wort, the new make spirit carries distinct nutty and malty flavors. The only official regular bottling is a 12-year-old expression in the Flora & Fauna series. Additionally, in autumn 2017, a 23-year-old expression matured in European oak sherry casks was released as part of Diageo's Special Releases series.

Took a sip and immediately hit with this bold, almost chalky dryness upfront – like biting into a crisp apple straight from the orchard. Then the preserved pears and a hint of brown sugar roll in, sweet but not cloying, with a touch of vanilla and muscovado adding depth. There's a grassier, fresh baguette-like note underneath, something earthy and wholesome, maybe barley syrup lingering like porridge. The finish is rather long, with lemon zests and citrons brightening things up, while apricots and kiwis dance around – orchard fruits running free, exactly as the label says. A splash of coffee liqueur complexity sneaks in too, but nothing overpowering. Surprisingly refreshing, like a superior dram that’s just perfect without any flaws. Even hoggie played no part here, which is a relief – it’s all about the pure fruit syrup and classic woods. Proper lovely, this one. 🥃

Oh, this one’s proper something else—like a summer’s day in the orchard but with a proper kick. First sip, you get this zing of lemon zest and kiwi, fresh as a baguette straight from the bakery, but then it’s all about those plums and pears, like someone’s left a jar of preserved fruit in the sun. The sugar’s muscovado, rich but not cloying, like porridge with a bit of honey—just enough to make you want another spoonful. Then there’s this nervous energy, like a lager you’ve just cracked open, but it’s all held back until the end. The wood’s classic, warm but not overpowering, and suddenly you’re thinking of vanilla and coffee liqueurs, all swirling together. It’s long—proper long—with that tartness of chalk and apples, like biting into a green one straight from the tree. And for a second, it’s almost like it’s moving on its own, that IBdom kicking in just right. No flaws, just pure fruit syrup and a bit of leaven, like the yeast’s still got a mind of its own. It’s superior, no question—like a good white wine but with the depth of a proper dram. You finish it and just want to sit there, thinking about the next one. 🍏🍐

Poured myself a wee dram tonight and it’s a proper lovely ride 🥃 Starts off so fresh, reminds me of my morning bowl of muesli with a chopped up Apple and a cheeky drizzle of Barley syrup. There’s a distinct bready vibe too, like leaven or a straigth up fresh baguette with a sprinkle of brown sugar and just a little honey. Then it gets bursting with fruit, like opening a jar of preserved pears mixed with ripe peaches, Plums and apricots. It basically tastes like pure fruit syrup but with a splash of crisp white wine to keep things perfectly balanced. Really refreshing stuff! Gets a bit grassier as it sits, with some sharp citrons and kiwis making it a bit tarter. It feels pretty nervous in the glass, shifting around all the time. The finish is rather long with this weird but cracking little leafy stout from the wood note. Honestly, it is almost moving mate. Smashing way to end the evening 🥂

I'd say it opens with this lovely rush of orchard fruits — pears and apples just dancing around, with a soft vanilla hug in the background. There's a hint of fresh baguette crust and something creamy, like coffee liqueur mixed into morning porridge. As it sits, I get little whispers of preserved pears, brown sugar, and a gentle lemon zest lift. It’s quite refreshing, almost like a crisp white wine with a chalky edge, but then that classic wood note comes through — not too heavy, just enough to remind you it’s whisky. Adding a drop of water really lets the pure fruit syrup shine — apricots, peaches, and a touch of honeyed muscovado. The finish is rather long, with a grassier, leafy stout vibe lingering, and a faint tangy kiwi brightness right at the end. Perfect dram for a slow evening, honestly. 🍎✨
