Kilchoman Distillery, established in 2005 by Anthony Wills, held the distinction of being Islay's first new distillery in 124 years and the industry's 'newcomer' until Ardnahoe joined the island's whisky community in late 2018. While Malt Mill (1908) operated within Lagavulin's premises, it was not an independent distillery as it shared Lagavulin's mash tuns. Kilchoman's success with its single malt whisky prompted a major expansion that doubled production capacity. The new still room, commissioned in April 2019, features two 1.2-ton stainless steel semi-lauter mash tuns, twelve 6,000-liter stainless steel washbacks with a 90-hour fermentation period, and two sets of stills. Production reached 220,000 liters in 2018, with projections of 300,000 liters for 2019. The distillery maintains traditional floor malting for 30% of its requirements, including 20 PPM peated malt, while sourcing the remaining 70% from Port Ellen Maltings, which includes malts peated to 50 PPM. The core range comprises Machir Bay and Sanaig (launched 2016, matured in bourbon and oloroso sherry casks). Loch Gorm is the limited edition expression that is uniquely fully sherry-matured, crafted from 100% Islay-grown barley that is malted on-site. Special releases include the STR Cask (distilled May 2019, using 50 PPM peated malt, bottled at 50% ABV, matured in re-charred and re-toasted red wine casks) and a 9-year-old 2009 Vintage. The 2019 Feis Ile special edition is a vatting of 2007 bourbon cask and 2008 oloroso sherry cask whiskies. The portfolio is completed by travel retail exclusives Coull Point (UK market) and Saligo Bay (global market).

This one’s a bit sweeter up front, like biting into one of those red jelly babies you’d get as a kid. The texture’s gentler and rounder, nowhere near as sharp as some I’ve had – more like sipping clean seawater off a medium-bodied frame. There’s a brine-y kick, almost like cracking open oysters by the shore, and a whisper of grapefruit peel that’s got me thinking of summer barbecues with marshmallows charred just right. The oak’s there too, in this hessian sort of way, like an old Boy Scout’s kit bag – solid but not overwhelming. Classic chalky minerality lingers, drying into this subtle ash note that’s oddly comforting. Green olives and lemony brightness keep it lively, though it’s tad less profound than the last cask I tried. Still, it’s an excellent one, all 42 barrels plus three butts worth of quiet depth. Ultra-clean, narrow, and somehow more consensual than expected – like it’s nodding along to whatever story you’re telling.

Just poured a dram and got a whisper of brine and seawater, with a hint of hessian sack and green olives on the nose. The palate is gentler, a tad less profound but still excellent – sweetness balances the brine‑y edge, like oysters, jelly babies and a splash of seafood on a beach picnic. There's a classic chalk dryness, medium body, ultra‑clean finish, and a lingering note of barbecued marshmallows and red ones fruit. A hint of lemons lifts it, making the feel more consensual and a bit narrower. 🥃

This one’s got a proper clean bite to it, you know? Like a brisk sea breeze – reminds me of oysters and green olives, that sort of salty-sweet combo. Then there’s this citrus kick, grapefruits and lemons dancing about, sharp but not overwhelming. The finish is ultra-clean, almost like a boy scout’s campfire smoke, but in a good way. Marshmallows on the grill, maybe a hint of that sweetness lingering. Medium-bodied, gentler than I expected, not too heavy. There’s a chalky undertone, classic and a bit earthy, but it’s all balanced. No wonder it’s such an excellent one – makes me think of summer evenings by the coast, with a splash of lemon and a plate of jelly babies. Proper lovely dram. 🥃

Aye, this one's got a gentler and rounder feel right off the bat, smooth like a well-worn jacket. There's a proper briny kick, remindin' me of green olives and oysters down by the coast, but it's not overpowerin'. The sweetness lingers just enough, like jelly babies on the tongue, with a clean, almost ultra-clean finish that's proper refreshing. Got a hint of classic chalkiness too, not too intense, and a subtle lemony zest that makes it feel brighter. The texture's like wool—soft but with a bit of grip, if that makes sense. Definitely an excellent one, not too profound, just a solid dram that leaves me thinkin' of boy scouts campin' by the sea, marshmallows on the fire. Clean, simple, and somehow both narrower and fuller at the same time. 🥃😄

honestly this is such an excellent one right 🥃 nosing first you get those barbecued marshmallows and a little pop of green olive, then on the sip there’s bright grapefruit and lemon, that briny oysters and fresh seafood hit, weirdly a fun little hint of jelly babies – the red ones specifically, such a nice throwback the finish has a bit of hessian and wool dryness, a touch of straw, and that gentle sweetness that sits so well, tad less profound than some super heavy drams but way more consensual for a casual night in with mates, y’know? it’s made across 42 barrels plus 3 butts so there’s enough depth without being overwhelming, just ultra-clean and gentler and rounder, perfect for just sipping without overthinking it
