Jura: A Remarkable Island Revival Located on Scotland's remote Isle of Jura, this eponymous distillery has become one of Scotch whisky's most impressive success stories. Closed and hidden since 1901, it was resurrected in 1960 through passionate local support, emerging from near-extinction with completely new equipment. In the past decade, single malt sales have surged 150% to 1.7 million bottles annually worldwide—extraordinary growth for a distillery that once faced closure. Production runs seven days a week since 2011, with 28 mashes weekly yielding 2.3 million liters of new make spirit in 2019, including one month of peated whisky at 45ppm. The facility features a 5-ton semi-lauter mash tun, four stainless steel washbacks (54-hour fermentation), and two still sets—the second tallest in Scotland. The 2018 core range includes Journey (American oak), 10 Year Old (Oloroso sherry cask), 12 Year Old (Oloroso cask), Seven Wood (seven French oak and bourbon casks), and 18 Year Old (red wine cask), all incorporating Jura's signature peated malt. Travel retail exclusives The Sound, Road, Loch, and Paps are PX sherry cask finished, while The Bay (12 years) is Asia travel retail only. Special releases include 2019's Jura Time (21-year peated cask) and limited editions: 1988/1989 Port cask vintages, Jura Tide (21 years, new American oak), French Oak, and Two One One Two (13 years, Chinkapin oak—honoring the island's 212 residents). Owner Emperador Inc. recently renovated Dalmore's visitor center with Jura's visitor experience upgrade planned for next year.

I’m having this dram by the fire and it’s just lovely. First sniff hits you with this fantastic nose – like a freshly opened box of Cubans mixed with gingerbread and a touch of earth. There’s something rather elegant about it, not too loud or pushy like some modern whiskies. On the palate, it’s all balance really – bags of walnuts and mustardy spice, a whisper of cloves and nutmeg. The metallic touch and copper notes make me think of an old ale, but there’s also this bone-dry Madeira wine quality underneath. Long finish, proper long – earthy, leathery, like Jura’s wackiness but tamed. You get a hint of fresh-cut grass and maybe some moist pipe tobacco. It’s a bit like sipping Madeira sauce with a slice of toasted bread. Proper warming, with a marvellous earthiness that lingers. Just grand.

First sniff hits me with fresh‑cut grass and a hint of copper, like walking through a damp field after rain. Then there’s a whiff of newly‑opened box of Cubans, walnut peels and a touch of marmite‑y earthiness. On the palate it’s dry but balanced, with a metallic touch and a bit of mustardy bite, reminiscent of Madeira sauce reduced down to about 45% vol. A gentle nutmeg and cloves spice lingers, while the finish is long, leaving a faint ale‑like sweetness and a dry, almost bitter orange note guarding the back of the throat. Lovely 🥃

Blimey, this one’s got a fantastic nose – like a newly opened box of Cubans, all smoky and rich. The first sip is rather perfect spiciness, with nutmeg and cloves dancing around gingerbread sweetness. There’s a touch of earth and that Jura’s leathery wackiness, but it’s balanced brilliantly, not pushy at all. Copper and metallic notes come through, but they’re smooth, not sharp. The finish? Long, like a bone-dry Madeira wine lingering with bitter oranges and a mustardy kick. Lovely how it’s dry but not harsh, and that cognacqy side sneaks in – reminds me of sipping ale by a fire while nibbling walnut peels. Marmite-y notes and bags of walnuts add depth, but it never gets heavy. A proper elegant dram, the opposite of those modern loud whiskies. Just me and a cigar, really.

Oh wow, this is just lovely. First whiff is all fresh-cut grass and a newly-opened box of Cubans – a fantastic nose once it opens up a bit. Getting that lovely balance between the salt and mustard and something sweet like gingerbread. On the palate, it's quite elegant, really. Not a pushy whisky at all. There's a touch of earth and a metallic copper note, alongside moist pipe tobacco and walnut peels. That rather perfect spiciness, cloves and nutmeg, really comes through. Hints of ale and bread, and a Cognac-like richness. The finish is long, mustardy, dry. Just keeps going with bags of walnuts and a bitter orange guard. The Jura character is there, that leathery, wacky side I enjoy. ✨

Took a sip and straight away I’m hit with this proper aromatic nose — like opening a fresh box of Cubans, with a hint of moist pipe tobacco and bitter oranges. There’s a marvellous earthiness mixed with walnut peels and a touch of copper, almost metallic touch, but it’s not harsh, more like a well-aged cheese rind. The taste? Proper mustardy upfront, salt and mustard combo, then this bone-dry Madeira wine vibe kicks in. The Cognacqy side comes through smooth, like a rich dessert wine, but balanced with cloves and gingerbread spice. It’s very elegant, not overpowering, and that long aftertaste just hangs around like freshly cut bread crusts dipped in Marmite. The finish is dry and slightly nutty, bags of walnuts dancing with a fantastically dry sherry note. Oddly enough, it’s got that Jura’s leathery wackiness tucked in there too — strange but brilliant. Perfect spiciness at the end, and overall, it’s got this unexpected balance, like a perfectly poured pint with a twist. Just... brilliant. 🥃
