Cambus Distillery, founded in 1836 by John Moubray in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, became Scotland's largest and most important Coffey Still grain whisky distillery. A devastating fire in June 1914 destroyed the facility, forcing a closure that lasted until its reconstruction in 1938. The distillery played a pivotal role in supplying grain whisky for major blends throughout the 20th century. Owned by UDV (United Distillers & Vintners), predecessor to Diageo, Cambus was officially mothballed in 1993. As a 'silent distillery,' remaining stocks have become exceptionally rare and highly prized by collectors, representing a crucial chapter in Scotland's grain whisky heritage.

Whiskyspace Notes 1686

Pouring a glass neat tonight, no soda water. First thing I get is this gentle herbal note, like dried herbs mixed with a hint of white chocolate sweetness. There's a touch of sweet maize and nougat, almost like fudge. Citrusy elements pop up – lime and limoncello, bright and zesty. The body is medium, not too heavy, with less oak influence making it feel fresh, like walking on a fresh-mown lawn or hay. Charcoal adds a subtle smokiness in the background. The style is a bit austere, but pleasant. I'm reminded of broken branches and even a rum-like sweetness. The finish brings gentle sour fruits, like white cherries. Some coconut lingers softly, and the whole thing tastes like higher-class grain. A hint of liquorice wood comes through. Just sipping this makes me smile. 😊

Quite gentle really, with a bit of white cherry and lemony limoncello at first, then it drifts into coconut, white chocolate and nougat. There’s a grassy bit too, like fresh-mown lawn and hay, plus a faint rum-and-mojito feel, but without the fizz. Light oak, a touch of charcoal and dried herbs. Easy wee dram 🙂

Right so, first sip and immedietly getting this lovely honey and toffee sweetness 🍯✨ there's a proper nice smokiness coming through, not too heavy like, just gentle and warming. bit of vanilla and caramel lurking in there too 🤤 can defo taste some fruity notes - maybe apple or pear? and theres this subtle oakiness that ties it all together really nicely 🍐 the finish is smooth as anything, bit of spice kicking about at the end which is quite pleasant actually. maybe some chocolatey undertones too overall just a really solid dram, goes down a treat on a cold evening 👌🥃 would happily have another glass of this tbh
