Established in 1885 by Andrew Usher Jr., William Sanderson, and John Crabbie, the North British Distillery Company is a landmark grain whisky producer situated in Edinburgh, Scotland. Conceived during the Victorian era's blended whisky revolution, the distillery was specifically designed to produce premium grain whisky using continuous column stills (Coffey stills). Andrew Usher, widely recognized as a pioneering figure in blended Scotch whisky, spearheaded this venture to secure a reliable supply of quality grain spirit for his renowned blends. The distillery's output—characterized by its light, delicate, and versatile profile—has become an essential foundation for countless iconic Scotch whisky brands. As one of Scotland's largest and most enduring grain whisky facilities, North British continues to operate with the same commitment to excellence, supplying premium grain whisky to the global Scotch industry.

Honestly this old grain is such a lovely surprise 🥃 Very pretty nose first off, all those lovely Sauvignon Blanc notes, white currants and a wee hint of coconut from the first fill barrels. It’s softened or seasoned with grain properly too, plus touches of fennel and dill that pop right back up at the end. There’s a bit of wet chalk lingering in the background too, such a nice little touch, and you can tell the barrel’s done its job just right. Medium in length on the finish, a bit out of v maybe but honestly there’s something special here that most folks are sleeping on, yeah? It’s got hints of quince too, truly a fine old grain for a quiet night in 🤙

Went in for a sip and was struck by a very pretty nose – think Sauvignon Blanc with a whisper of white wine and a faint Malibu‑ish coconut note. On the palate it’s medium in length, a tad sweet for my taste, with quince, a touch of fennel and dill, and that subtle wet chalk in the background. You can tell the first‑fill barrel’s done its job, softening the grain but still letting the old‑grain character shine. Not the most striking feature, but there’s definitely something special here, especially at 45% ABV. 🙂

Had a quick dram and was instantly hit by a very pretty nose – almost like white wine with a whisper of Sauvignon Blanc and a faint wet‑chalk note in the background. The first‑fill barrel really did its job, giving a discreet hint of coconut that reminded me of the old 1st‑fill cask. On the palate there are touches of fennel and dill that pop up again after a few sips, while the quince and white currants add a gentle fruitiness. It leans a bit sweeter than I usually go for, maybe a tad sweet for my taste, but the mullein flower liqueur edge keeps it interesting. There’s also a subtle grain softness, truly a fine old grain feeling, and a soft, medium‑length finish that feels a little out of vogue but oddly comforting – something special here. 😊

Nose is properly pretty – I'm getting white wine vibes with a whisper of Sauvignon Blanc, some juicy quince and white currants dancing about. First fill barrels definitely show their work here, there's a bit of coconut hanging around that feels like a cheeky Malibu memory. On the tongue, it's a fine old grain, softened just right. Touches of fennel and dill pop up, quite herbal and fresh. The 45% ABV thing is a brilliant move, keeps it all nicely balanced – medium in length with that subtle sweetness leaning through. Not sure if the grain stuff is really in vogue these days, but there's something lovely here when it all clicks. Barrel's done its job, letting the fruit and spice sing without getting shouty. Proper moreish dram this.

There's something special here, I must say. The nose is very pretty – floral, almost like mullein flower liqueur mixed with white currants and a touch of quince. First fill barrels give it a proper depth, and the grain softens things nicely, though it's a tad sweet for my taste. A bit of coconut from the cask reminds me of Some Malibu, but in a more refined way. Hints of Sauvignon Blanc and fennel come through, balanced with dill notes. The barrel's done its job well, leaving a medium length finish with a discreet hint of coconut. It's leaning a bit sweeter, which might not be its best feature, but there's no denying it's truly a fine old grain. Forgotten vibes, but in a good way – like a white wine that's out of vogue but still lovely. 🥃
