Established in 1885 by Andrew Usher Jr., William Sanderson, and John Crabbie, the North British Distillery Company is a landmark grain whisky producer situated in Edinburgh, Scotland. Conceived during the Victorian era's blended whisky revolution, the distillery was specifically designed to produce premium grain whisky using continuous column stills (Coffey stills). Andrew Usher, widely recognized as a pioneering figure in blended Scotch whisky, spearheaded this venture to secure a reliable supply of quality grain spirit for his renowned blends. The distillery's output—characterized by its light, delicate, and versatile profile—has become an essential foundation for countless iconic Scotch whisky brands. As one of Scotland's largest and most enduring grain whisky facilities, North British continues to operate with the same commitment to excellence, supplying premium grain whisky to the global Scotch industry.

Whiskyspace Notes 2270

Had a wee dram this evening, reminded me of walking through a field of yellow flowers with a hint of acacia honey on the breeze. Light, floral side, a touch of sorb berries and a fleeting sorb‑like sweetness, then fades quick – not long on the finish. Almost like sipping silver needles tea, fresh and slightly empty feeling, but pleasant. 🌼

Had a quick dram after work and was instantly hit by a kind of very young first‑flush tea vibe, like the freshness of those early spring brews. The grain whisky base gave it a light, clean start, then the medlars and tiny apples popped up, soft and a bit jammy. A splash of freshly squeezed orange juice‑like zest and tangerine brightened the middle, while a whisper of fried rice gave it an oddly comforting, almost toasty note. I could also taste dandelion and yellow flowers dancing on the side, with a hint of gorse that reminded me of a sunny hedge. The finish was pleasantly sweet, a touch of sorb berries and jujubes, leaving a gentle, almost empty quality that made me think of a mellow Havana Club from the 1960s after a long day. All in all, a much better feel than I expected, and it didn’t feel like it’d been hanging around too long. 😊

First sip got me thinking of straw and a hint of dandelion, then a whisper of acacia blossoms and very young first‑flush tea. There's a touch of sorb berries and medlars, with a bit of complexity like climbing the second rung of a ladder. A little tangerine zest and freshly squeezed orange juice brighten it up, while a faint note of fried rice and silver needles adds an earthy edge. Feels much better than expected, though there's a slightly 'empty' quality that keeps it intriguing. 🌾

Takes a sip and it’s like a bit of tangerine dancing with acacia blossoms straight away, bright and floral. Reminds me of those yellow flowers in the garden back home, sweet but not cloying. There’s a softly pleasantly sweet side, maybe some jujubes lingering, and a touch of freshly squeezed orange juice that makes me think of summer mornings. The silver needles give it a crisp edge, though, like a breeze through the trees. Not sure where the fried rice bit comes from, but there’s a nutty grain whisky warmth underneath, keeping it grounded. No Port Ellen fiery kick here, just a mellow climb up the second rung—nothing over the top, but enough going on to keep you sipping. Feels like it’s got a bit of Havana Club from the 1960s hiding in the background, old-school but smooth. Complexity sneaks up on you, though. Started simple, ended with layers. Not bad, not bad at all 🥃

First sip has this lovely crisp apple note, almost like biting into a small, slightly sour one from the garden 🍏 Gets a bit floral then – something like fresh gorse flowers, maybe a hint of those tiny yellow ones too The middle bit makes me think of dried fruits, not jujubes exactly but something like that, mixed with a drop of acacia honey There’s a very light, almost tea-like quality here, reminds me of silver needles or a very young first-flush brew Does have a slightly grainy character underneath, not a bad thing at all Finish doesn’t hang around too long, honestly It’s pleasant enough, not a heavy dram at all, quite a easy-going pour for a quiet evening 🌙
