Tobermory Distillery, located on the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, boasts a rich heritage dating back to its founding in 1798. In spring 2017, the distillery embarked on an extensive renovation project that extended well beyond initial projections, remaining closed for over two years. This prolonged closure was partly attributed to parent company Distell Group's simultaneous renovation of their Bunnahabhain Distillery on Islay. During this extended hiatus, Tobermory utilized the downtime for innovative experimentation, developing Tobermory Hebridean Gin using a small-scale experimental still. Launched in 2019, this gin uniquely combines neutral grain spirit with Tobermory's new make whisky spirit and incorporates botanicals foraged from the Isle of Mull. Historically, all whisky from the distillery was marketed under the Tobermory name until the 1930s closure. Following that period, the distillery adopted a dual-brand strategy, producing both unpeated Tobermory whisky and peated Ledaig whisky, with the latter featuring a phenol content of 38-40ppm. The renovation period saw significant equipment modernization. In 2019, the distillery replaced its 45-year-old, 5-ton cast iron mash tun with a brand-new vessel of identical capacity. The facility also operates four new wooden fermentation vats with fermentation times ranging from 48-100 hours, and two sets of copper pot stills. Two stills were replaced in August 2014, with the remaining two updated in 2019. Prior to the 2017 closure, Tobermory operated at full capacity, mashing eight batches weekly and producing 750,000 liters of new make spirit annually, with a production split of 55% Ledaig and 45% Tobermory. Post-renovation production targets for 2019 were set at 500,000 liters. The distillery's core range includes the redesigned Tobermory 12 Year Old (replacing the previous 12-year expression), Tobermory 10 Year Old, and Ledaig 18 Year Old. Recent limited releases showcase innovative cask finishes, including Tobermory 19 Year Old Marsala cask, Ledaig 13 Year Old Port cask, and Ledaig 21 Year Old Manzanilla cask. At the time of writing, the distillery has also introduced Tobermory 2007 Vintage Sherry cask and Ledaig 1997 Vintage Port cask expressions.

Blimey, this dram’s such a lovely surprise 🥃 First off it’s gentler than I expected, way less peaty, a little lighter than the usual heavy peaty drams I reach for but still has that proper depth, soft leather note right at the start too. You get that warm pipe tobacco straight off, followed by a little zing of bitter oranges and a hint of Cointreau’s citrus sweetness. Then there’s that brine and saltiness, like you’ve just walked along a windy Scottish coast, plus a subtle mullein flower liqueur floral note I wasn’t expecting at all. Mid palate you get that mildish Jamaican rum warmth, a touch of liquorice, caraway, and that mushrooms after the rain earthiness, even a little gamey hint like cured venison. The finish is very long, mint and eucalyptus come through, a faint menthol tingle like a dash of crème de menthe, plus that ink-y dark fruit depth and smoked ham savoury note. Saltier yet in the best way, full gold colour, so extremely rich but not heavy at all, honestly so drinkable 🍂

Justhad a dram that reminded me of a rainy walk through the hills – a hint of game meat, a touch of pipe tobacco, and that little lighter note of menthol floating on top. The finish is very long, with a salty kick that gets zestier as it lingers, almost like biting into bitter orange zest mixed with a splash of mullein flower liqueur. There’s a whisper of crème de menthe and a mildish Jamaican rum sweetness underneath, making it feel less peaty but still extremely rich. Feels like a warm, smoky hug after a game of football. 🍊

Just nosing this now… it’s odd but brilliant. Like walking through a damp forest floor after rain—mushrooms, earth, then a sudden wave of brine and old leather from a ship’s hold. Takes a sip and it’s got a sort of smoky ham quality, but lighter, zestier, with a kick of bitter orange peel and a hint of liquorice. A bit of cough syrup richness in there too, but balanced by something salty, almost like seaweed. And that minty, eucalyptus note comes through later, really refreshing. The finish is what gets you. Very long, warming, with a lingering note of pipe tobacco and a whisper of that mullein flower liqueur sweetness. Quite the journey. 🍷

Hmm, there's something like old library books and pipe tobacco when I first sip it. Feels a bit like ink has got in there somehow. Then it gets gentler, saltier yet, almost coastal. The brine note is there too, but less peaty than usual for me. There's a sweet side, like cough syrup mixed with bitter oranges, maybe a hint of Cointreau? Quite zestier ones than I expected. It finishes long, with a little lighter menthol and liquorice coming through.

It's got this lovely full gold colour, like late afternoon sunlight. First whiff, I get a bit of crème de menthe mixed with bitter oranges – quite fresh but with depth. Then it shifts to leather and pipe tobacco, very cozy, like walking into an old study. There's less peat than I expected, more of a rich, almost cough syrup sweetness, but not cloying. The taste brings in game meat and caraway, with brine that makes it saltier yet. Extremely rich, but somehow still balanced. After a while, I notice something like mushrooms after the rain – earthy and damp. There’s a hint of Cointreau and eucalyptus in the finish, a little lighter and refreshing. Overall, it feels like a walk through a misty forest that opens onto a sunny coast. 🌿
