Dalmore, the revered Highland single malt distillery founded in 1839 on the northern shores of the Cromarty Firth near Alness, established its visitor center in 2004 with a renovation in 2011. Despite commanding a prime position along Scotland's arterial A9 highway between Inverness and Thurso—a location that should naturally drive substantially higher footfall—the distillery currently welcomes just 12,000 visitors annually. Under the ownership of Whyte & Mackay (Emperador Inc.), the distillery secured planning consent in October 2018 for a transformative expansion. This involved demolishing existing office and bottling facilities to more than double the visitor center's footprint. Completed by August 2019, the reimagined center offers breathtaking panoramic vistas across the Cromarty Firth, though the scenic beauty is compromised by decommissioned North Sea oil platforms lingering in the firth, casualties of depressed petroleum prices. Production is orchestrated around a 10.4-ton stainless steel semi-lauter mash tun, eight Oregon pine washbacks with an extended 50-hour fermentation, and four pairs of distinctive pot stills. The wash stills feature unique flat tops, while spirit stills are equipped with water jackets that manipulate reflux between the lyne arm and neck, enabling exceptional copper contact and spirit refinement. Operational targets for 2019 envisioned 22 mashes weekly, yielding 4 million liters of new make spirit. The core portfolio comprises the foundational 12, 15, 18, and 25-year-old expressions, complemented by the masterful King Alexander III (six cask finishes) and the robust Cigar Malt Reserve. The Port Wood Reserve entered the permanent range in 2018, undergoing initial maturation in bourbon barrels before a secondary finishing period in tawny port pipes. Travel retail exclusives are anchored by Valour, with the 2016 addition of the Sherry Cask Trilogy: Regalis (Amoroso sherry), Luceo (Apostoles sherry), and Dominium (Matusalem sherry). Recent limited editions have amplified Dalmore's ultra-premium positioning, including reissues of the 35 and 40-year-old, the Vintage Port Collection trilogy, the 45-year-old (Spring 2018), and the landmark 60-year-old released in Autumn 2019 to global acclaim.

Took a sip and got hit by this surprisingly shy start—freshly squeezed oranges and tangerines right off the bat, but then it swings into cardamom and turmeric, which is a bit weird. The finish lingers long and a bit burning, with sour fruits and pink grapefruits popping up. Has its charms though, but after twenty seconds it turns rather bitter, almost like hay and green walnuts mixed with burnt notes. Not the most rewarding I've had, but the touch of liquorice and better oranges than cod oil keeps it from being ueber-simple. Just a bit too binary for my taste—grass and rubber undertones make it feel a little flat. Still, it's way, way nicer than most I've tried lately. 🥃

Takes a sip and immediately hits you with Oranges and tangerines, but in this binary way—either they’re there or they’re not. The nose is grassy, hay, a bit of turmeric, and yes, those pink grapefruits lurking somewhere. First taste’s surprisingly shy, almost ueber-simple, but then it opens up with cardamom, a touch of liquorice, and this weird rubbery note that’s oddly satisfying. The finish is long, green a little bitter, like green walnuts and grapefruit skin rolled into one. It’s a little hot going down, burns just enough to remind you it’s there. Not the most rewarding Dalmore ever, but there’s something about it that’s way, way nicer than cod oil. Has its charms though—I’d have another if it’s sitting on the side.

Nose opens with a surprisingly shy grassy note, like crushed tangerine peel and grapefruit skin left out in hay. Takes a moment to settle, then this sort of ueber-simple bitterness kicks in, green a little bitter but not overwhelming. The first sip’s got freshly squeezed oranges upfront, sweet sugarcane syrup threading through, but then that burnt edge creeps in, reminds me of toasted walnuts. A touch hot, burning enough to make you blink, yet the citrus holds on steady. Cardamom pops up mid-palate, quirky but works. Long finish drags a bit, green walnuts and sour fruits lingering. Way, way nicer than I expected, though—better oranges than cod oil, surely. More turmeric’s hiding somewhere, earthy and oddly comforting. Not the most rewarding ever, but it’s got its charms.

First whiff, got cardamom and green walnuts, with tangerines popping in. Tasted fresh oranges, but there's a burnt note and a bit hot, like burning. Sugarcane syrup sweetness comes thru, yet it turns rather bitter after say twenty seconds. Has its charms tho, not the most rewarding I've ever had, but way, way nicer in spots. Better oranges than cod oil, for sure. More turmeric and hay later, ueber-simple and binary really. Grapefruit skin bitterness lingers, a little green and bitter. 🤔

Warm and a bit spicy, with soft honey, oak and a wee smoky edge 🥃 Feels cosy, slightly dry at the end, but quite easy to sip.
