Old Pulteney, nestled in the coastal town of Wick in Scotland's far north Highlands, stands as one of the mainland's northernmost distilleries. Owned by Inver House Distillers, this maritime whisky has been crafted since 1826 when James Henderson founded the distillery, naming it after Sir William Pulteney. Isolated before road connections reached the remote town, Old Pulteney relied entirely on sea trade for its barley and whisky, instilling a deep maritime heritage that remains the very soul of its character today.

Loved this fresh, characterful little one – straight in the nose with williams pears, peaches and a hint of gravenstein apples, plus vanilla and a whisper of elderberry eau-de-vie. More wood than I expected, first fill oak never really came through but gives a medium body. A touch of chalk, drops of seawater and white asparagus instead of turnips give it a pretty coastal feel, not quite on iodine or oysters but oysters this time? A little white wine note and a dash of turmeric linger. Way better when au naturel, with a little ale on the side for good fun. Small whiffs of tomato leaves and gentian pop up, finish slightly smokier, incredible freshness. 🌿🥃

Fresh and coastal, like a breeze off the sea with drops of seawater and a hint of oysters this time. White asparagus pops up instead of turnips, earthier than before. Gentian’s there, no doubt, and a touch of vanilla from the oak. Peaches and Williams pears add a sweet lift, but it’s the freshness that wins—way better neat. A little ale in the mix? Good fun. Smokier finish lingers, but it’s still that same bloodline, just simpler. Loved this one 🍸

Loved this little one straight away, genuinely 😄 Hits you right in the nose — gravenstein apples, williams pears, a bit of peach, almost like an elderberry eau-de-vie, pretty eau-de-vie-ish all round really. There's this lovely freshness to it, chalky almost, with small whiffs of tomato leaves and just a touch of gentian — gentian indeed, once you clock it you can't un-smell it. Drops of seawater creeping in too, so yeah, pretty coastal, clearly coastal actually once it opens up a bit. Medium weight, not too heavy, and the first fill oak never really came barging through which I was glad about — way better au naturel like this, lets all that fruit breathe. Finish has a slightly smokier aftertaste than I expected, and there's this earthy turmeric thing going on underneath — odd but it works somehow. Oysters this time round too, which is fun. Good fun dram overall. Just a little simpler than some, but honestly that's no bad thing on a Tuesday evening 🥃

Just cracked this one open. A bit simpler than the last, but clearly from the same family. Got this ale-like, earthy note right off the bat... almost like a younger elderberry eau-de-vie. The coastal hint is there, but it's more like oysters this time than pure iodine. The first-fill oak never really came through strongly, which keeps it bright. A slightly smokier aftertaste creeps in, and there are these small whiffs of tomato leaves – such a lovely freshness. Way better when you let it breathe au naturel. It's good fun, really. Loved this fresh, characterful little one. It hits straight in the nose with williams pears and white asparagus instead of turnips. The chalk and gravenstein apples are clearer here, making it feel less coastal and more...orchard on a cliff? The kinship with its siblings is obvious, but this one's a bit quieter. Incredible, fresh, and just a joy to sip.

Wow, this one's really interesting. First thing I got was that gentian root right in the nose - pretty coastal, almost like a sea breeze. But then it softened into these lovely ripe peaches and williams pears. Really fresh character, incredible actually. Got some chalk and white wine minerality there too, pretty eau-de-vie-ish in style. Feels quite medium in body, not quite on iodine or oysters but has that coastal vibe for sure. The more I sip, the more I get less coastal and a bit earthier - in a good way, like damp soil after rain. There's some elderberry eau-de-vie notes coming through, with just a little simpler wood influence. The first fill oak never went too heavy. Especially vanilla starts to appear as it opens up. Finishes with that slightly smokier aftertaste and drops of seawater lingering. Loved this fresh, characterful little one 😊🌊
