Glen Garioch (pronounced 'Glen Geery') stands as one of Scotland's most venerable whisky institutions, nestled in the historic market town of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. Officially founded in 1797—though the Aberdeen Journal documented production as early as December 1785—this distinguished Highland distillery embodies over 235 years of uninterrupted Scottish whisky heritage. The distillery's character underwent a profound transformation in 1994 when traditional floor malting ceased, marking the end of its lightly peated era (8-10 ppm phenol content). Contemporary Glen Garioch expressions showcase a classic unpeated Highland style, though vintage bottlings from the pre-1994 era remain highly coveted by collectors for their subtle, elegant smoke. Technical specifications reflect an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship: a single 4-ton full lauter mash tun feeds eight stainless steel washbacks with an extended 72-hour fermentation, fostering complex ester development. The copper pot still system comprises a wash still and spirit still (the latter replaced in 2016), with a third still held in reserve. This meticulous process yields approximately 45,000 liters of new make spirit annually from seven mashes per week, matured in four traditional dunnage warehouses with earthen floors and thick stone walls. The core portfolio is distinguished by its bold 48% ABV bottling strength, delivering exceptional mouthfeel and intensity. The Founder's Reserve (no age statement) and the 12-Year-Old form the foundation, while limited editions demonstrate remarkable wood management. The 15-Year-Old, matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, is strategically positioned for the travel retail channel. Since 2013, the Virgin Oak series has explored the impact of pristine American white oak maturation. Prestigious vintage releases from 1978, 1990, 1994, 1997, and 1998 offer temporal snapshots of the distillery's evolution, complemented by a special 2007 bottling commemorating the Rare Fayre celebration. The Renaissance Collection, a four-chapter narrative series launched in 2014, chronicled Glen Garioch's rebirth, culminating in a sophisticated 18-Year-Old finale in 2018. Each December, the signature Rare Fayre festival transforms the distillery into a convivial gathering where enthusiasts tour the historic facilities, participate in advanced masterclasses, sample exclusive cask-strength expressions, and procure artisanal crafts—evoking the traditional 'Fair' gatherings that have long defined Scottish community and commerce.

This dram hits you with a proper smoky punch right off the bat – think sooty embers and a hint of coal dust. The nose is all earthy peat and that sharp, peppery kick, but there's something oddly intriguing about the rubbery, tarry edge lurking underneath. On the palate, it's hefty and full-bodied, almost fat, with these very acidic grapefruits dancing around cigar ashes and old rusty metal. The finish is long and leafy, leaving a trail of camphor and leather polish. Not sure if it's the more phenolic batches or just the way it's been aged, but it's got this wild, untamed spirit. Funny enough, it reminds me of those old Glen Gariochs that used to pack a Brora-like punch – not the baddest of news, but definitely not for the faint-hearted. The clay and scoria notes make it feel like a proper Campbeltown relic, though it's much closer to Springbank in character. A gentler one might suit some, but this has enough smoke to keep you warm on a dreich evening. 🥃🔥

Just had a dram that’s like a campfire in a leather-bound book. Proper smoky and sooty upfront, with a sharp bite that reminds me of cigar ashes and camphor chests. There’s an earthy, almost clay-like depth underneath, and the finish is long and leafy, like wet stems after rain. Not the baddest of news, though—somehow it’s still got a gentler side, even with all that peat. Makes me think of those classic vintages where the spirit’s more robust, almost coal-like in the best way. The sweetness pops through too, like Seville oranges dusted with scoria. Bit of a journey, but in a good way—like walking through a forest fire and coming out smelling like straw and old books. 🥃

Quite a sharp one this time, more ashy and sooty than before. First sip hits with coal dust and a bit of camphor, then it opens up to that earthy clay and scoria sort of feel. Reminds me of straw mixed with leather polish – not bad at all. There's a real peculiar rubbery/tarry side to it, very intriguing. The citrus from Seville oranges cuts through, but it's balanced by that classic cigar ash and peppery peat. Definitely on the smoky side, with a long finish that sticks around. The gentler one from last year was fatter, but this has more structure, more smoke. It's got that earthy, very peaty batch character, like something you'd find in the old casks. Really quite a special bottle.

Ah, this one’s got that proper sooty, coal-smoke punch right off the bat 😅 Really reminds me of those very peaty batches, a bit leathery and kinda chalky, like old clay. There’s a weird but interesting side to it, almost like rubber bands or tar – very peculiar. But then it gets gentler, a bit fatter on the tongue, with some leafy notes coming through. The finish is long, sharp, and ashy, with a faint hint of cigar ashes. Not the baddest of news at all. Reminds me a bit of that classic vintage Springbank character, though this has more of a peppery peat kick and a touch of camphor. Enjoying the earthy, smoky vibe overall.
