Glen Garioch (pronounced 'Glen Geery') stands as one of Scotland's most venerable whisky institutions, nestled in the historic market town of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. Officially founded in 1797—though the Aberdeen Journal documented production as early as December 1785—this distinguished Highland distillery embodies over 235 years of uninterrupted Scottish whisky heritage. The distillery's character underwent a profound transformation in 1994 when traditional floor malting ceased, marking the end of its lightly peated era (8-10 ppm phenol content). Contemporary Glen Garioch expressions showcase a classic unpeated Highland style, though vintage bottlings from the pre-1994 era remain highly coveted by collectors for their subtle, elegant smoke. Technical specifications reflect an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship: a single 4-ton full lauter mash tun feeds eight stainless steel washbacks with an extended 72-hour fermentation, fostering complex ester development. The copper pot still system comprises a wash still and spirit still (the latter replaced in 2016), with a third still held in reserve. This meticulous process yields approximately 45,000 liters of new make spirit annually from seven mashes per week, matured in four traditional dunnage warehouses with earthen floors and thick stone walls. The core portfolio is distinguished by its bold 48% ABV bottling strength, delivering exceptional mouthfeel and intensity. The Founder's Reserve (no age statement) and the 12-Year-Old form the foundation, while limited editions demonstrate remarkable wood management. The 15-Year-Old, matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, is strategically positioned for the travel retail channel. Since 2013, the Virgin Oak series has explored the impact of pristine American white oak maturation. Prestigious vintage releases from 1978, 1990, 1994, 1997, and 1998 offer temporal snapshots of the distillery's evolution, complemented by a special 2007 bottling commemorating the Rare Fayre celebration. The Renaissance Collection, a four-chapter narrative series launched in 2014, chronicled Glen Garioch's rebirth, culminating in a sophisticated 18-Year-Old finale in 2018. Each December, the signature Rare Fayre festival transforms the distillery into a convivial gathering where enthusiasts tour the historic facilities, participate in advanced masterclasses, sample exclusive cask-strength expressions, and procure artisanal crafts—evoking the traditional 'Fair' gatherings that have long defined Scottish community and commerce.

Blimey, first sip of this is proper aggressive and super spirity, even a bit raw with that nail polish whiff to start 😅 Add a splash of water like it needs though and it all shifts – suddenly way fruitier, loads of limes, orange zest, cherry, peach and melon juice, even that wee coastal salty side I love. Got that barley sugar sweetness too, plus hints of strong green tea, black tea, a touch of patchouli and even a bit of eucalyptus. The varnishy fruitiness lingers, there’s a slight acrid edge at the back, but the finish is so long and all smoothness? Really punchy, very excellent, takes no prisoners and I’m totally sold 🥃

Undiluted, this one's really punchy and takes no prisoners – raw spirit with a rather acrid edge, even whiffs of nail polish. But it loves water! Add a drop and it becomes smoother, with juice and varnishy fruitiness coming through. There's a wee coastal side, like empty seashells and straw, plus greenish oranges and many limes. When reduced, very fruity with peaches and orange zests, hints of strong green tea and black tea. More complex now, almost like two whiskies in one – very strong baby! Long finish with touches of grass smoke and eucalyptus. Very excellent. 🥃

This one hits you with a burst of greenish oranges and cherries right off the bat—like biting into a tangerine with a side of barley sugar. Proper citric and raw, almost like squeezing juice from a peach, but then there's this whiff of nail polish upfront that's a bit odd. It's got a wee coastal side to it, salty and smoky, with grass smoke lingering. The two whiskies in one thing is spot on; one sip's aggressive and punchy, the next mellows out with touches of patchouli and eucalyptus. Needs water, mind—it loves water and opens up into something smoother, fruitier, and more complex. Undiluted, it's spirity and takes no prisoners, but once you add that splash, it's like sunshine in a glass. Very excellent, honestly. 🥃✨

Right, so I cracked this one open neat and blimey — it's quite aggressive, really punchy. Got this raw spirit hit that's like, two whiskies in one almost? Very strong baby, takes no prisoners undiluted 😅 Loads of fruit going on though — tangerines, peaches, cherries, even some melons in there. Greenish oranges and orange zests giving it a citric kick. Whiffs of nail polish and that varnishy fruitiness at first, bit rough honestly. But here's the thing — add a splash of water and oh my, it transforms. Loves water this one. All smoothness comes through, gets way fruitier when reduced. That grass smoke and wee coastal side start showing up, touches of patchouli, empty seashells kinda vibe 🌊 Finish is long, hints of barley sugar, strong green tea, black tea notes. Some straw in there too, bit of eucalyptus freshness. Much more complex once you give it time. Definitely needs water imo — spirity and raw neat, but smoother and fresher with a drop. Many limes coming through as it opens up. Proper juice when you treat it right 🥃

I had a dram of this whisky neat, and it’s a very strong baby – takes no prisoners with grass smoke and whiffs of nail polish. A bit rough, but intriguing. Add water and it loves it; the fruitiness comes out, like many limes and orange zests, even some greenish oranges. Undiluted, it’s quite aggressive, but with a drop, all smoothness appears – touches of patchouli and a wee coastal side, empty seashells come to mind. Very fruity when reduced, with melons and tangerines. The finish is long, hinting at barley sugar and fresher notes. 🥃
