Clynelish Single Malt Whisky stands as one of the most esteemed and strategically vital distilleries within Diageo's portfolio, serving as a cornerstone malt for the iconic Johnnie Walker blended Scotch whisky range, particularly the prestigious Gold Label Reserve. The distillery's distinctive waxy, honeyed character has rendered it indispensable to master blenders for nearly two centuries. Dr. Jim Beveridge OBE, Diageo's Master Blender for over four decades, has been the guardian of Johnnie Walker's consistent quality and signature house style. As only the sixth Master Blender in the brand's 200-year history, Beveridge helms a team of 12 expert blenders while bearing ultimate responsibility for the world's best-selling Scotch whisky. Among all malt whiskies, Clynelish holds a privileged position in his blending repertoire, alongside Talisker, as his preferred foundation for crafting complex blends. In recognition of his monumental contributions to the Scotch whisky industry, Dr. Beveridge was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2019, an honor that coincided with Diageo's bicentennial celebrations. The Clynelish distillery underwent a comprehensive year-long refurbishment in June 2017, emerging with state-of-the-art equipment including a 12.5-tonne full lauter mash tun, eight traditional wooden washbacks, and two stainless steel fermenters. The facility operates with three pairs of stills, offering panoramic views of Brora village and the North Sea from the stillhouse. Running seven days a week, the distillery produces approximately 4.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. Notably, around 6,000 casks of Clynelish spirit mature in the warehouses of its sister distillery Brora, which ceased operations but is now undergoing extensive restoration to reopen in 2020. The majority of Clynelish's maturation stock, however, rests in other Diageo facilities across Scotland. Clynelish's official bottlings showcase the distillery's elegant character, led by the benchmark 14-year-old expression and the Distiller's Edition, which receives a finishing period in Oloroso Seco sherry casks. The distillery has also featured prominently in Diageo's annual Special Releases, with the Clynelish Select Reserve appearing for two consecutive years. In a contemporary marketing highlight, spring 2019 saw the launch of the Game of Thrones Limited Edition Collection, featuring eight single malts—including a Clynelish bottling representing House Tyrell at 51.6% ABV, without age statement.

Dark gold in the glass, and what a great nose – waxy oranges and plenty of bitter ones jumping out first. There’s something almost pastis-like in the background, but then those walnuts again, mustardy and slightly too caramelised like walnut cake left in the oven a touch too long. Notes of rancio and fino sherry peek through, smooth mind, no lumpy sherry here. Touches of chillies and pepper give it a quiet kick, while chestnuts and honeydew linger sweetly. Old cognac style, that old-school spirit, polished to perfection. They’ve got it good in the warehouse – ten years of bottle ageing has done its job. Long finish, and gosh, it works again! Even better than I remembered.

Gosh, this one’s a bit of a surprise, in a good way. The colour’s a rich dark gold, like it’s been aged in some old warehouse for ages – ten years of bottle ageing, I reckon. The nose hits you straight away with this great mix of pepper and bitter oranges, but then there’s something deeper, almost like walnut wine and chestnuts roasting by a fire. On the palate, it’s smooth, no lumpy sherry nonsense here – just this rancio thing going on, like caramelised walnut cake and a hint of mustardy walnuts. There’s a touch of fino sherry in the background, but it’s not overpowering, more like it’s been polished the corners with age. The finish is long, proper long, and it’s got this old cognac style warmth, with a whisper of coffee and maybe some pastis lingering. Blimey, it works again! 🥃

Dark gold in the glass, and the great nose hits you first — coffee and bitter oranges dancing with mustardy walnuts. There's a hint of warehouse dust, like old books and wooden casks. On the tongue, it's all about balance: rancio sweetness weaving through chillies and chestnuts, while pastis adds a herbal edge. The spirit feels bold but not rough, polish the corners sort of thing. Walnut wine and caramelised walnut cake linger, warm and nutty, with a long finish that just won't quit. Proper winter dram this one. 🥃

Had a dram this evening and the nose hit me straight away – dark gold shimmer, sweet rancio notes and a hint of walnut wine. On the palate there’s that old‑school, ten years of bottle ageing feel, a bit of mustardy walnuts mingling with chestnuts and waxy oranges. A cheeky flick of chillies pops up, then pepper slides in and I can almost hear someone polishing the corners of a wooden cask. It’s not lumpy sherry at all, more like a smooth, long finish that just keeps walking on. Proper great nose, love it 🍂.

Poured myself a dram of this dark gold beauty tonight. Been sitting in the bottle for about ten years apparently, and honestly it's come together rather nicely. First thing that hits me is this waxy orange peel note, like peeling a tangerine by candlelight. There's honeydew in there too, soft and sweet, quite unexpected. Then it gets a bit savoury - mustardy walnuts, almost like a proper winter snack. Reminds me of those caramelised walnut cakes you get at Christmas markets. The chestnut thing is subtle but there, like walking past a roaster on a cold London street. Got this warehouse vibe going on, dusty and woody, makes you think of old barrels just sitting there doing their thing for decades. Very old cognac style in a way, that mature, rounded feel. And then there's this little chilli kick right at the end, just a gentle warmth that polishes the corners off everything. Doesn't bite, just... smooths it all out somehow. Gosh, what a lovely pour. Going to sit with this one a while longer I think 🥃
