Clynelish Single Malt Whisky stands as one of the most esteemed and strategically vital distilleries within Diageo's portfolio, serving as a cornerstone malt for the iconic Johnnie Walker blended Scotch whisky range, particularly the prestigious Gold Label Reserve. The distillery's distinctive waxy, honeyed character has rendered it indispensable to master blenders for nearly two centuries. Dr. Jim Beveridge OBE, Diageo's Master Blender for over four decades, has been the guardian of Johnnie Walker's consistent quality and signature house style. As only the sixth Master Blender in the brand's 200-year history, Beveridge helms a team of 12 expert blenders while bearing ultimate responsibility for the world's best-selling Scotch whisky. Among all malt whiskies, Clynelish holds a privileged position in his blending repertoire, alongside Talisker, as his preferred foundation for crafting complex blends. In recognition of his monumental contributions to the Scotch whisky industry, Dr. Beveridge was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2019, an honor that coincided with Diageo's bicentennial celebrations. The Clynelish distillery underwent a comprehensive year-long refurbishment in June 2017, emerging with state-of-the-art equipment including a 12.5-tonne full lauter mash tun, eight traditional wooden washbacks, and two stainless steel fermenters. The facility operates with three pairs of stills, offering panoramic views of Brora village and the North Sea from the stillhouse. Running seven days a week, the distillery produces approximately 4.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. Notably, around 6,000 casks of Clynelish spirit mature in the warehouses of its sister distillery Brora, which ceased operations but is now undergoing extensive restoration to reopen in 2020. The majority of Clynelish's maturation stock, however, rests in other Diageo facilities across Scotland. Clynelish's official bottlings showcase the distillery's elegant character, led by the benchmark 14-year-old expression and the Distiller's Edition, which receives a finishing period in Oloroso Seco sherry casks. The distillery has also featured prominently in Diageo's annual Special Releases, with the Clynelish Select Reserve appearing for two consecutive years. In a contemporary marketing highlight, spring 2019 saw the launch of the Game of Thrones Limited Edition Collection, featuring eight single malts—including a Clynelish bottling representing House Tyrell at 51.6% ABV, without age statement.

gosh, it works again! 🥃 Popped open this after ten years of bottle ageing last night, and the great nose is just chef’s kiss – waxy oranges first, then that old cognac style warmth, plus chestnuts and caramelised walnut cake wafting straight out. You get a little pepper kick, rich coffee notes, no lumpy sherry sweetness cloying it up, and the spirit feels so nicely mellowed. Long finish too, left me reaching for another pour straight after. 👌

Just poured a dram, deep dark gold in the glass, nose hits pastis and fino with a touch of waxy oranges and a hint of pepper. First sip brings caramelised walnut cake, mustardy walnuts and a bit of chestnut warmth, then coffee and rancio linger. Finish is long, with a bit of chillies and honeydew sweetness, like polishing the corners of an old cognac style barrel. 😊🥃

Right so I poured this last night and honestly gosh it works again Got this lovely waxy orange thing going on right away, then it shifts into proper bitter oranges like marmalade on toast. There's a walnut wine richness underneath that reminds me of Christmas chestnuts roasting, with a sneaky bit of pepper and chilli creeping in at the back. The spirit itself is so polished, like it just smooths off all the edges and polishes the corners of your mouth if that makes sense. Old cognac style elegance but with more guts. Fino dryness meets caramelised nuts and a whisper of coffee. The finish just goes on forever honestly. Proper long finish that keeps evolving. One of those drams where everything just clicks

Gosh, they have it good in the warehouse! 🥃 This one’s got a proper great nose—dark gold and all. The first sniff hits you with old cognac style, but then there’s this waxy oranges thing going on, like candied peel mixed with bitter oranges. Sip it and it’s slightly too caramelised walnut cake at first, but ten years of bottle ageing have polished the corners beautifully. The coffee and honeydew come through, almost like a walnut wine crossed with pastis. There’s a superb depth, though—touches of chillies and pepper sneak in, and those mustardy walnuts keep popping up! Long finish, no lumpy sherry here… just chestnuts and a whisper of fino. Blimey, it works again! 👍

Poured a dram last night, dark gold colour, gorgeous in the glass. The nose is just lovely – there's this warehouse dusty thing going on, mixed with mustardy walnuts and a hint of old pastis. Reminds me a bit of that old cognac style you sometimes find in well-aged stuff. First sip and gosh, it works again! There's pepper kicking in nicely, really polishes the corners off. Bitter oranges and waxy oranges, layered over coffee and roasted chestnuts. Not that lumpy sherry bomb style at all – much more refined. A touch of rancio too, which I always love. The finish just goes on and on. Proper long finish, warming and complex. Honestly sat there for ages just savouring it 🥃 Really lovely pour this one, right up my street.
