Clynelish Single Malt Whisky stands as one of the most esteemed and strategically vital distilleries within Diageo's portfolio, serving as a cornerstone malt for the iconic Johnnie Walker blended Scotch whisky range, particularly the prestigious Gold Label Reserve. The distillery's distinctive waxy, honeyed character has rendered it indispensable to master blenders for nearly two centuries. Dr. Jim Beveridge OBE, Diageo's Master Blender for over four decades, has been the guardian of Johnnie Walker's consistent quality and signature house style. As only the sixth Master Blender in the brand's 200-year history, Beveridge helms a team of 12 expert blenders while bearing ultimate responsibility for the world's best-selling Scotch whisky. Among all malt whiskies, Clynelish holds a privileged position in his blending repertoire, alongside Talisker, as his preferred foundation for crafting complex blends. In recognition of his monumental contributions to the Scotch whisky industry, Dr. Beveridge was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2019, an honor that coincided with Diageo's bicentennial celebrations. The Clynelish distillery underwent a comprehensive year-long refurbishment in June 2017, emerging with state-of-the-art equipment including a 12.5-tonne full lauter mash tun, eight traditional wooden washbacks, and two stainless steel fermenters. The facility operates with three pairs of stills, offering panoramic views of Brora village and the North Sea from the stillhouse. Running seven days a week, the distillery produces approximately 4.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. Notably, around 6,000 casks of Clynelish spirit mature in the warehouses of its sister distillery Brora, which ceased operations but is now undergoing extensive restoration to reopen in 2020. The majority of Clynelish's maturation stock, however, rests in other Diageo facilities across Scotland. Clynelish's official bottlings showcase the distillery's elegant character, led by the benchmark 14-year-old expression and the Distiller's Edition, which receives a finishing period in Oloroso Seco sherry casks. The distillery has also featured prominently in Diageo's annual Special Releases, with the Clynelish Select Reserve appearing for two consecutive years. In a contemporary marketing highlight, spring 2019 saw the launch of the Game of Thrones Limited Edition Collection, featuring eight single malts—including a Clynelish bottling representing House Tyrell at 51.6% ABV, without age statement.

The colour's a real deep gold, catches the light nicely. First nose hits me with grapefruits and this muscaty sweetness, like old Sauternes left in the sun. There's bergamots and a bit of potpourri too – quite perfumed, not sure I'm keen on that. The palate's got coffee and cinnamon upfront, with a sharp lime tang cutting through. Balsamic vinegar lingers somewhere in the back, along with this weird camphory wood that reminds me of mushrooms and moss. Mid-length finish, dry and dusty, though there's a peppery kick at the end. Earthy notes, musty like an old attic, and a touch of leather. Cardboard and hay sneak in too, gives it a bit of a musty, cinnamony aftertaste. Walnuts and sultanas pop up – feels different, not your usual Speyside. Un-Clynelish maybe? Like it's missing something. Tea and cigarette tobacco in the mix as well. Not bad, but a bit all over the place. 🥃

The first sip hits with this odd mix of earthy mushrooms and a musty cellar vibe, like old books and damp wood. There's a sharp twist of balsamic vinegar and sultanas that makes me think of a fruitcake left out too long. Cinnamon rolls in midway, but not in a cozy way—more like a dusty spice rack. The finish is all cigarette tobacco and leather, with a peppery kick that lingers. Weirdly, it reminds me of walnuts and moss, maybe even a bit of potpourri. Grapefruits and lime are hiding in there somewhere, cutting through the sweetness. The coffee and tea notes are subtle, but the camphory wood gives it this medicinal edge. Not sure why, but it feels different from what I expected—less honeyed, more like old Sauternes gone rogue. Mid-length, but the cardboard undertones are a bit disconcerting. Still, it's got character 🌰

A deep gold pour catches the light and I get this odd, almost mustard‑like bite of balsamic vinegar, then a sharp lime snap that makes me think of a bitter grapefruit zest. There’s a peppery bite that feels a bit like fresh cracked pepper mixed with a hint of cigarette tobacco, while the background whispers of old leather and damp moss. A hint of sultanas and muscaty old Sauternes comes through, giving it a sweet‑ish, almost tea‑like softness, then a dusty, cinnamon‑spiced aftertaste that lingers like a cuppa with bergamot. It’s definitely different, a bit musty and pepper‑laden, but oddly comforting. 😊

Poured this one last night and it's a bit... different, honestly. The colour's a lovely deep gold, but the nose caught me off guard. Got this musty, earthy thing going on — like damp moss and old cardboard, with some dried sultanas hiding in there. A touch of muscaty sweetness if you look for it, maybe some hay and potpourri too. Slightly disconcerting if I'm being honest. First sip — there's grapefruits and lime giving it a citrusy edge, then walnuts and that camphory wood note creep in. The mid palate's got some leather and mushrooms, like opening an old book in a damp cellar. Peppery finish with a bit of cinnamon spice 🤔 The aftertaste lingers with dusty cinnamon and a hint of cigarette tobacco. Almost reminds me of coffee grounds mixed with tea leaves. Definitely not your typical Clynelish-style dram. It's quirky. Not sure if I love it yet but it's keeping me interested. Might need another glass to decide 😅

First sip hits with pepper and grapefruits, kinda prickly then citrusy. Mellows into this old Sauternes sweetness mixed with walnuts and hay—really reminds me of autumn in the countryside. There’s a mossy, earthy note underneath, like walking on damp ground after rain. Then it shifts: coffee grounds and a whiff of leather, almost like an old bookshop. Strange hint of balsamic vinegar and potpourri, like an antique drawer opened unexpectedly. A bit of cigarette tobacco at the end, dusty and dry. Overall, pretty disconcerting but kinda charming. Feels like it shouldn’t work but does—different, yeah, quite unusual again. For lack of a better word, it’s intriguingly messy, like a foraged picnic. Tiny-wee bit musty, but not bad at all. 🍂
