Clynelish Single Malt Whisky stands as one of the most esteemed and strategically vital distilleries within Diageo's portfolio, serving as a cornerstone malt for the iconic Johnnie Walker blended Scotch whisky range, particularly the prestigious Gold Label Reserve. The distillery's distinctive waxy, honeyed character has rendered it indispensable to master blenders for nearly two centuries. Dr. Jim Beveridge OBE, Diageo's Master Blender for over four decades, has been the guardian of Johnnie Walker's consistent quality and signature house style. As only the sixth Master Blender in the brand's 200-year history, Beveridge helms a team of 12 expert blenders while bearing ultimate responsibility for the world's best-selling Scotch whisky. Among all malt whiskies, Clynelish holds a privileged position in his blending repertoire, alongside Talisker, as his preferred foundation for crafting complex blends. In recognition of his monumental contributions to the Scotch whisky industry, Dr. Beveridge was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2019, an honor that coincided with Diageo's bicentennial celebrations. The Clynelish distillery underwent a comprehensive year-long refurbishment in June 2017, emerging with state-of-the-art equipment including a 12.5-tonne full lauter mash tun, eight traditional wooden washbacks, and two stainless steel fermenters. The facility operates with three pairs of stills, offering panoramic views of Brora village and the North Sea from the stillhouse. Running seven days a week, the distillery produces approximately 4.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. Notably, around 6,000 casks of Clynelish spirit mature in the warehouses of its sister distillery Brora, which ceased operations but is now undergoing extensive restoration to reopen in 2020. The majority of Clynelish's maturation stock, however, rests in other Diageo facilities across Scotland. Clynelish's official bottlings showcase the distillery's elegant character, led by the benchmark 14-year-old expression and the Distiller's Edition, which receives a finishing period in Oloroso Seco sherry casks. The distillery has also featured prominently in Diageo's annual Special Releases, with the Clynelish Select Reserve appearing for two consecutive years. In a contemporary marketing highlight, spring 2019 saw the launch of the Game of Thrones Limited Edition Collection, featuring eight single malts—including a Clynelish bottling representing House Tyrell at 51.6% ABV, without age statement.

Right, poured myself a dram tonight. It’s this gorgeous pale gold colour, catching the light. 🌟 First sip, the mouth feel is just... perfect. Waxy, smooth, coats everything. Get this amazing leather and old coal stove note right away, like stepping into a warm, old workshop. Then the engine oil and diesel oil thing hits, but not in a bad way – more like a complex, metallic/mineral side that’s kinda fascinating. 😅 There’s a real balance is achieved here. Sweet bitter orange liqueur and old orange liqueur notes, then liquorice and sharp spices coming through. The peat smoke is roaring in the background, blending with a smoky grassiness. Reminds me a bit of those waxy things from the 80s, you know? Metal polish, maybe a hint of light cough syrup? But all fabulous together. The aftertaste just lingers, all citrus fruits and that deep, oily warmth. Absolutely fabulous stuff.

Poured a dram, that pale gold colour catches the light nicely. First whiff, sharp spices jump out, mixed with something like old vase water – a bit earthy. Tasting it, I get hints of old orange liqueur and peat smoke swirling around. There's a leathery, waxy feel that’s kinda cool, but then engine oil and diesel oil notes sneak in, making it rugged. Aftertaste lingers with a touch of light cough syrup and metal polish, oddly perfect for sipping slow. In the background, a roaring smokiness comes through, with smoky grassiness and bitter orange liqueur fading out. 🥃

This pale gold whisky's got that waxy vibe straight off. Nose: peat smoke swirling with citrus fruits and a hint of old orange liqueur – maybe bitter, like in a good way. A bit of smoky grassiness and leather in there too. Tastes waxy, with smoke roaring away in the background. There's a touch of vase water and light cough syrup, even engine oil and that metallic/mineral side. Mouthfeel is perfect – just oily enough. Really reminds me of those 80s classics, great for appreciating the tertiary stuff. Perfect for the anti-maltoporn brigade. 😊

Just tried this, and blimey, it's something else. 🥃 The balance is achieved right from the start – leather and old orange liqueur on the nose, with a roaring in the background of diesel oil and engine oil. Sip it, and you get smoky grassiness, perfect mouth feel – waxy things, bitter orange liqueur, even a hint of light cough syrup. Peat smoke swirls in, and there's a touch of liquorice. The aftertaste lingers with a metallic/mineral side, like metal polish and vase water, plus an old coal stove. Tertiary notes make it complex. Not for the anti-maltoporn brigade, but I'm chuffed. 😊
