Clynelish Single Malt Whisky stands as one of the most esteemed and strategically vital distilleries within Diageo's portfolio, serving as a cornerstone malt for the iconic Johnnie Walker blended Scotch whisky range, particularly the prestigious Gold Label Reserve. The distillery's distinctive waxy, honeyed character has rendered it indispensable to master blenders for nearly two centuries. Dr. Jim Beveridge OBE, Diageo's Master Blender for over four decades, has been the guardian of Johnnie Walker's consistent quality and signature house style. As only the sixth Master Blender in the brand's 200-year history, Beveridge helms a team of 12 expert blenders while bearing ultimate responsibility for the world's best-selling Scotch whisky. Among all malt whiskies, Clynelish holds a privileged position in his blending repertoire, alongside Talisker, as his preferred foundation for crafting complex blends. In recognition of his monumental contributions to the Scotch whisky industry, Dr. Beveridge was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2019, an honor that coincided with Diageo's bicentennial celebrations. The Clynelish distillery underwent a comprehensive year-long refurbishment in June 2017, emerging with state-of-the-art equipment including a 12.5-tonne full lauter mash tun, eight traditional wooden washbacks, and two stainless steel fermenters. The facility operates with three pairs of stills, offering panoramic views of Brora village and the North Sea from the stillhouse. Running seven days a week, the distillery produces approximately 4.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. Notably, around 6,000 casks of Clynelish spirit mature in the warehouses of its sister distillery Brora, which ceased operations but is now undergoing extensive restoration to reopen in 2020. The majority of Clynelish's maturation stock, however, rests in other Diageo facilities across Scotland. Clynelish's official bottlings showcase the distillery's elegant character, led by the benchmark 14-year-old expression and the Distiller's Edition, which receives a finishing period in Oloroso Seco sherry casks. The distillery has also featured prominently in Diageo's annual Special Releases, with the Clynelish Select Reserve appearing for two consecutive years. In a contemporary marketing highlight, spring 2019 saw the launch of the Game of Thrones Limited Edition Collection, featuring eight single malts—including a Clynelish bottling representing House Tyrell at 51.6% ABV, without age statement.

Pale gold in the glass, it smells like smoky grassiness and a hint of old coal stove mixed with something metallic, like engine oil or metal polish. The mouth feel is perfect – waxy and rich, with roaring notes of peat smoke and sharp spices in the background. Tastes a bit like old orange liqueur and leather, with a light cough syrup sweetness sneaking in. The balance is achieved, leaving a fabulous aftertaste that lingers on the palate. Cheers to waxy things and that diesel oil vibe! 😊

First sip and there's this lovely waxy thing going on, like those old 1980s Clynelishes I remember 🥃 Then the smoky grassiness hits — not aggressive, more like standing near an old coal stove on a damp morning. Some diesel oil in there too, but in a good way, you know? The citrus fruits come through next, like bitter orange liqueur mixed with a touch of light cough syrup. Sounds weird but it works somehow. Has that perfect mouth feel — thick, oily, coating everything nicely. The tertiary notes keep developing as it sits. Honestly it's fabulous stuff. Reminds me a bit of Ardbeg's smoky side but with more of that waxy, liquorice character. There's a metallic/mineral edge lurking in there too. The aftertaste just hangs around forever. Exactly what I fancied tonight 😊

Pale gold in the glass, and on the nose, there's this old coal stove thing going on – like poking a dying fire. You get a bit of that diesel oil, quite industrial, but then there's this unexpected citrus fruits note, almost like an old orange liqueur that's been sitting in the cupboard for ages. When you taste it, wow. Sharp spices hit you first, then this wonderful smoky grassiness. There's a metallic/mineral side, like licking a clean coin, and something that reminds me of leather. It's fabulous, really. The aftertaste has this lingering liquorice and a hint of light cough syrup, which I actually like. It feels a bit like standing near a roaring engine, but in the best way possible. Just perfect for a chilly evening. 👍

Just had a dram of this pale gold beauty and honestly it's taken me somewhere quite unexpected. First thing that hit me was this waxy, almost greasy texture on the tongue — reminded me of that old furniture polish smell, you know? Then there's this engine oil thing going on in the background, like standing near a vintage motor. The smoke isn't aggressive, more like smoky grassiness if that makes sense... like walking past a field where someone's had a bonfire last night. Gets this old coal stove vibe after a bit, very nostalgic. There's definitely bitter orange liqueur in there, and something a bit like when you leave flowers in the vase too long 😅 Weirdly pleasant though. Hints of liquorice and that metallic mineral thing I quite enjoy. The aftertaste is where it really shines — long, waxy, with this leather and metal polish character that just hangs around. Really well balanced, nothing fighting for attention. Reminds me of those 1980s bottles people rave about, that kind of tertiary complexity you don't see much anymore. Proper stuff 👌

just had a sip and immediately got hit with this waxy, smoky grassiness. honestly, it’s like sniffing a vase water drawer where someone keeps all the waxy things. the peat smoke comes through, but then these sharp spices are roaring in the background - bit wild, innit? taste-wise, think leather and diesel oil. the mouth feel is perfect, though. somehow the balance is achieved between engine oil and old orange liqueur. there’s a hint of metal polish and light cough syrup, like an old coal stove warming up. oh, and that liquorice finish? absolutely fabulous. the citrus fruits make a late show too, a bit tertiary but fits right in. perfect nightcap stuff. 😊
