Brora stands as one of Scotland's most legendary 'ghost distilleries,' having operated from 1819 to 1983 before its closure and miraculous rebirth in 2020. Originally established as Clynelish by the notorious Marquis of Stafford during the Highland Clearances, the distillery was rebuilt in 1896 by James Ainslie, creating a heavily peated maritime malt that became essential to Johnnie Walker blends. After DCL built a new Clynelish distillery in 1967, the original site was renamed Brora and specialized in robust, phenolic whisky for premium blends. During its 'silent era' (1983-2020), remaining stocks became some of the world's most collectible whiskies, commanding auction prices exceeding $10,000 per bottle. Diageo's £35 million restoration preserved two original copper pot stills and vintage equipment, relaunching production in 2020 with an 800,000-liter capacity. The distillery's waxy, sooty, maritime character—reminiscent of burnt heather and sea salt—continues to define its ultra-premium Special Releases and the milestone 40-year-old 200th anniversary edition.

Blimey, what a beast of a dram 🥃 Tbh it’s not quite a nosing whisky straight out the bottle, give it 5 mins and the wet gravel, lemon zests and orange zests pop first, with that sharp cut grass, straw and faint chive whiff, maybe a hint of capsicum and wasabi heat too? On the palate it’s super austere at first, proper perfect earthy style vibes, then you get the fruitier candied lemons, kumquats, a little creamy custard edge, plus that green tea and slight sooty, earthy finish. It’s a bit less expressive overall, not super loud, but that very long lemony zesty, grassy aftertaste is proper nice if you’re after that unpretentious, earthy number.

This dram hits you like a damp morning on a country lane—wet gravel and fresh mushrooms straight away, earthy and a bit austere, like licking a stone wall. There’s smoke and peat in the back, but not too heavy, more like a distant bonfire. The palate’s dry, with pepper and capsicum giving a warm kick, while lemon zests and grapefruits add a zesty lift. It’s a beast of a whisky, but in a good way—needs a moment to open up. Not quite a nosing whisky, mind, but when it does, rosemary and juniper berries pop out, like a garden after rain. The finish is very long, with hints of oatcakes and porridge clinging on. Bit of a wasabi flash mid-swig, though—sharp and unexpected. Overall, proper earthy stuff, but I wouldn’t call it fruity or creamy. Just solid, no-nonsense character. 🔥🍂

First sip hits with this bright lemon zest and orange peel thing, almost like someone grated citrus right into the glass. 🍋 Then it gets very grassy, almost like smelling freshly cut lawn after rain. There's a damp clay and peat note underneath, reminding me of walking on a wet country path. I get these little kumquat notes popping up, slightly tart. More grass, really prominent - fresh, green, almost leafy. The palate is quite milk-smooth though, which is interesting against all that sharpness. A bit of straw and spice comes through, maybe some white pepper. It's honestly very austere and sharp, like a blast of wasabi and chives. But there's a wonderful green tea and lemon quality holding it together. Cut grass and earth are all over this, with some fresh mushrooms in the background. Wet gravel, definitely - that mineral earthy thing. Perfect earthy style, really digging it.

Sharp lemon and grapefruit up front, then loads of grass, wet stone and earthy peat 🌿 Feels quite austere, a bit peppery, with smoke, clay and fresh mushroom vibes. Long finish, lemon zest, soot and green tea… odd but rather wonderful.

Oh, this whisky's got a lovely smoky note right off! 🔥 Quite peaty too, with a hint of fruity sweetness – maybe apple or pear? 🍎 On the palate, it's smooth with a touch of vanilla and oak. Finishes dry with a bit of honey, real nice. 🥃😊 A bit of spice comes through, and a subtle nuttiness. Really enjoyng it, to be honest!
