Ben Nevis Distillery, established in 1825 by Long John MacDonald, stands as one of Scotland's most historically significant whisky producers. Located at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak, it uniquely sources water filtered through ancient peat bogs and granite for over a century, creating an unparalleled mineral profile. As one of only three Highland distilleries licensed immediately after the 1823 Excise Act, it pioneered legal whisky production in the region. The distillery holds a revered place in Japanese whisky history: Taketsuru Masataka, the father of Japanese whisky, apprenticed here in the 1920s, finding its robust character aligned with his vision. His Scottish wife Rita Taketsuru (née Macdonald) was ironically a descendant of the distillery's founding family. In 1989, Nikka Whisky acquired Ben Nevis, fulfilling Taketsuru's long-held admiration. Ben Nevis distinguishes itself through uncompromising traditional methods: no caramel coloring, no chill filtration, and uniquely in Scotland, fermentation using beer yeast. This creates a full-bodied spirit with intense stone fruit, orange marmalade, and dark chocolate notes, developing characteristic leather and tobacco complexity with age. The distillery employs traditional worm tub condensers and direct fire heating on some stills, preserving historic character. Production is split: approximately 30% of new make spirit ships directly to Japan for maturation in Nikka's warehouses, while the remainder ages on-site for Ben Nevis's scarce official bottlings. Due to severe stock shortages, age statements are deliberately understated—8-year-old releases contain 8-14 year whisky, 10-year-olds contain 12-15 year, and 15-year-olds contain 17+ year spirit. This makes authentic OB expressions exceptionally rare compared to numerous independent bottlings, positioning Ben Nevis as a cult favorite among connoisseurs seeking unadulterated, traditional Highland single malt.

First sip hits you with a bright gold colour and a whiff of manzanilla, almost like a dry sherry touch. There's a salty coastal breeze, seawater and a hint of mustard, then the nutty walnuts and sesame come through. Mid‑palate feels full of oils, thick bread, very fat, with green peppercorns giving a little kick. The finish is huge, very long, leaving notes of petrol, metal polish and soot, like a bonfire on the beach. 🌊

First sip, blimey, it's got this wild mustardy vibe on the nose, quite sharp and bold, then suddenly you get that petrol and seawater kick – proper coastal, makes me think of standing by the docks in Scotland. Real thick and oily, almost chewy, and the salty notes just keep rolling along, dead long finish. Loads of walnut and green pepper, almost like munching roasted pecans with a pint after work 🍻. No sweetness or wine stuff at all, honestly a bit brutal but in a good way. Feels gold and chunky, like pure Ben Nevis in a glass.

Blimeing hell, this one's a proper beast! First sip and it's like standing on a windswept pier – that coastal brine and seawater punch you right in the face. Absolutely no winey nonsense, just this thick, nutty weight – green walnuts and roasted pecans all over it. Full of oils, slick and heavy, with a lovely walnutty richness. The finish is massive, very long, that perfect sootiness and a touch of metal polish lingering like you've been licking a coin. A manzanilla-y hint comes through, dry and sherry-like, mixed with some green peppercorns for a wee spicy kick. Quite some ethanol, mind you – 62%+ will do that! Proper fat and mustardy, almost like eating thick bread dipped in seawater. Then there's this weird but wonderful salty-sweet thing, like caramelised walnuts and sesame. It’s pure, intense, and leaves you tasting roasted nuts and petrol for days. Just magic – 90 plus one for Colin, whatever that means!

Blimey, that’s a proper beast! Hits you with a wall of salt and soot first, like standing on a pier in a storm. Then there’s this oily, nutty wave—walnuts, green ones even, and a whiff of petrol fumes. The nose is all mustard and peppercorns, sharp as anything. Thick as treacle, coats your mouth like a greasy spoon’s toast. Long finish too, just lingers with that salty, coastal tang. Not for the faint-hearted, this one. 🔥

Right, so I poured myself a dram of this Ben Nevis and immediately got this huge hit of metal polish and petrol on the nose. Proper coastal stuff, like standing on a Scottish beach with the seawater spraying up. 🌊 Takes a bit of water to tame it - quite some ethanol there at cask strength. Once it opens up though, there's this wonderful salty, manzanilla-y thing going on, almost like fino sherry lees. The sootiness is bang on, like an old fireplace but in a good way. Really fat and oily mouthfeel, coats everything. Getting roasted pecans and walnuts, maybe some green walnuts too, with a touch of mustard seed. There's sesame lurking underneath, and honestly reminds me of thick bread toasted over coals. The finish is pretty brutal but in that satisfying way, you know? That petrol and petrol thing lingers with the saltiness. No winey notes at all which I appreciate - just pure, uncompromising coastal character. Full of oils, very long. Not for the faint-hearted but bloody lovely if you're in the mood for something properly characterful. 🥃
