Ben Nevis Distillery, established in 1825 by Long John MacDonald, stands as one of Scotland's most historically significant whisky producers. Located at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak, it uniquely sources water filtered through ancient peat bogs and granite for over a century, creating an unparalleled mineral profile. As one of only three Highland distilleries licensed immediately after the 1823 Excise Act, it pioneered legal whisky production in the region. The distillery holds a revered place in Japanese whisky history: Taketsuru Masataka, the father of Japanese whisky, apprenticed here in the 1920s, finding its robust character aligned with his vision. His Scottish wife Rita Taketsuru (née Macdonald) was ironically a descendant of the distillery's founding family. In 1989, Nikka Whisky acquired Ben Nevis, fulfilling Taketsuru's long-held admiration. Ben Nevis distinguishes itself through uncompromising traditional methods: no caramel coloring, no chill filtration, and uniquely in Scotland, fermentation using beer yeast. This creates a full-bodied spirit with intense stone fruit, orange marmalade, and dark chocolate notes, developing characteristic leather and tobacco complexity with age. The distillery employs traditional worm tub condensers and direct fire heating on some stills, preserving historic character. Production is split: approximately 30% of new make spirit ships directly to Japan for maturation in Nikka's warehouses, while the remainder ages on-site for Ben Nevis's scarce official bottlings. Due to severe stock shortages, age statements are deliberately understated—8-year-old releases contain 8-14 year whisky, 10-year-olds contain 12-15 year, and 15-year-olds contain 17+ year spirit. This makes authentic OB expressions exceptionally rare compared to numerous independent bottlings, positioning Ben Nevis as a cult favorite among connoisseurs seeking unadulterated, traditional Highland single malt.

Tried this and it’s got a citrus zing right from the start, then a whiff of camphor and that little coastal vibe—almost saltier than usual, actually! 🍋 Green apples pop out, bit of paraffin and waxes, which feels a wee bit blended but really interesting. There‘s a proper peatiness lurking in the background, like it came from an Islay cask, with a hint of chalk and some porridge warmth. The finish is rather long and frank, straight as you like, and honestly bordering on perfection for me. Only thing is—it’s got that deviant singles edge, so it’s a little different, but I quite fancy it. Excellent stuff!

Just poured a glass of this dram and wow, the peat hits you straight away - proper big peat, like standing next to a bonfire on Islay. But then there's this bright lemon zing upfront, almost like squeezing a fresh one over porridge, which sounds odd but actually works. The finish? Long and coastal, salty air mixed with grapefruit and green apple tang, lemons again trailing off. There's a hint of mint and something medicinal, maybe camphor, but it's not overpowering. You get the baker’s yeast warmth, a bit of coal smoke lingering, and the peat fades out leaving this clean, chalky minerality. The cask influence feels ex-Islay, giving it that maritime edge. Not sure if it's the waxes or the Clynelishy character, but it's got a waxy texture, smooth yet slightly salty. The blend's a wee bit different tonight - straighter, less complex maybe, but still bordering perfection. Another superb one, that's for sure. Just a little different, mind, but in a good way. 🥃

Ah, that’s a proper one. Starts with a whiff of paraffin and wax, like an old shed by the sea. Then—bam—big peat hits, but it’s not overpowering, just lurking in the corner. Lemon and green apple pop up, sharp and fresh, with a hint of crushed chalk. There’s a wee bit of mint too, almost like toothpaste but in a good way 😅 Finish is long, salty, with grapefruit hanging around. Bit of porridge warmth underneath, and that coastal breeze just ties it all together. Superb stuff.

Ah, that’s the stuff! Starts with a proper golden pour, then there’s this wee bit of bitter leaf lurking behind all the zesty lemon and citrus. Almost like a fresh porridge with a hint of baker’s yeast, but then—bam—just a whisper of peat hiding in the corner, like it’s shy. Saltier than usual too, proper coastal vibes. Minty freshness pops up, and the finish is long, waxy, with a touch of that old Islay cask charm. Cleaner than the last one, straighter somehow. Another superb one, this. Frankly, bordering perfection 🥃

Right then, just had a pour of this full gold beauty. It’s a bit different alright... First sip, you get this big peat and coal smoke hit, but it's balanced by something creamy, like a warm porridge with lemon zest stirred in. Then it turns rather coastal, frankly – I'm thinking of sea air and a little salt. The middle is interesting, more lemon and citrus, maybe some green apples. There's a background note of waxes and a little plasticine, like a toybox memory. I'm getting something a bit deviant, maybe from an ex-Islay cask? It’s superb one, bordering on perfection. The finish is really long. Grapefruits come through strong, with a bitter leaf and crushed chalk minerality. The peat remains in a corner, not going away, just mingling with this clean, almost minty or camphor freshness. A truly excellent stuff, more Clynelishy in its waxy heart. Sláinte 🥃
