Banff Distillery, the first to bear the Banff name, was founded in 1824 by James McKilligan & Co. at Banff Bay, Inverboyndie. Ownership transferred to Alex Mackay in 1837, then to James Simpson Sr. and Jr. in 1852. In 1863, James Simpson Jr. built a new facility at Inverboyndie with superior railway access via the Great North of Scotland Railway and premium spring water from Fiskaidly Farm. The distillery suffered multiple disasters. On May 9, 1877, a major fire destroyed most of the facility except the warehouses. By October 1877, Simpson had rebuilt and resumed operations, keeping a fire engine on site. In 1921, the Simpson family sold part to London's Mile End Distillery Company. In 1932, a subsidiary of Distillers Company Ltd. purchased the entire distillery for £50,000 and immediately halted production. On August 16, 1941, a German Junkers Ju 88 bomber raid destroyed Warehouse No. 12, burning many whisky casks and contaminating local water supplies, reportedly poisoning livestock. Repairs began in winter 1941, but in 1943 the RAF 248 Squadron occupied the site until war's end. Post-war restoration ended tragically on October 3, 1959, when a still explosion during repairs destroyed equipment and damaged the distillery, resulting in a £15 fine for safety violations. Operations resumed but the distillery finally closed in 1983. By the late 1980s, most buildings were demolished; the final warehouse burned on April 11, 1991.

Poured a dram of this liquid gold tonight. It's actually a bit gentler and easier on the nose than I thought it'd be, given the higher strength. Gorgeous classic fruits pop up first—lots of sweet yellow plums, apples, and ripe apricots, with a lovely lemony zestiness and a squeeze of lime. Then it goes a bit herbal and savoury. Getting some ginger and sesame oil, even a bit of earthy mushrooms or rhodopaxillus, mixed with vanilla, honey, and a hint of mint. There's a touch of old humidor woodiness in there too. Packs a proper bit of oomph, a real killer dram. Honestly, it's got the very same high quality as the 1975 bottle I tried ages ago. Finish goes on so long. Absolute treat. 🥃

Right, so this one poured out a lovely gold colour. Gave it a sniff first — honey and warm vanilla jumped right out, then I got some apricot and that lemony zestiness. Really inviting. On the tongue, the first thing that hit was fantastic fruitiness — apples, yellow plums, even a bit of kumquat tang. There’s a gentle warmth to it, higher strength but not aggressive. A rounder mouthfeel, almost creamy. Behind that, I found these more unusual hints. A touch of ginger and sesame oil, a whisper of mint and eucalyptus cooling things down. Then, oddly, a faint savoury note that made me think of mushrooms, maybe a hint of mustard seed. It’s gentler on the nose than you’d expect, but still has a real oomph to it. The finish was wonderful, with that fruitiness lingering and a subtle honeyed sweetness sticking around. Killer stuff, honestly. Made me feel all warm and content. 😊

Oh, that was lovely, really wonderful! 😄 First nosing – got a humidor, honey, and vanilla, so gentle and easier on the nose than I expected. Then the taste... wow, the oomph is killer! Spicy ones like mustard and a little wasabi sauce hit first, but then come the classic fruits – apricots, yellow plums, apples, lime, quinces, and kumquats. There's even some eucalyptus and mint in there. The finish is long, with earth, mushrooms, and rhodopaxillus coming through, a bit nervous maybe, but beautifully balanced. A gold-medal sipper with fantastic fruitiness and the same high quality as that famous 1975. 🥃

Lovely wee dram 🥃 Bit of honey, soft smoke, and a warm oaky finish. Feels cosy, like a quiet evening by the fire. Slight spice, not too much — just nice and easy.

This dram’s got a right cozy hug to it 🍯 Warm baked apples and a wee whiff of bonfire smoke sort of like your gran’s kitchen after she’s been busy with cinnamon There’s a honey’d nuttiness that hangs about almost like toasted oatcakes drizzled in golden syrup then a flicker of dark chocolate 🍫 Just when you think it’s all soft, a spicy prickle kicks in ginger and a pinch of black pepper Finishes long and slow, leaving a memory of dried fruits and a faint earthy peatsmoke Aye, it’s a proper fireside sipper 🔥
