Banff Distillery, the first to bear the Banff name, was founded in 1824 by James McKilligan & Co. at Banff Bay, Inverboyndie. Ownership transferred to Alex Mackay in 1837, then to James Simpson Sr. and Jr. in 1852. In 1863, James Simpson Jr. built a new facility at Inverboyndie with superior railway access via the Great North of Scotland Railway and premium spring water from Fiskaidly Farm. The distillery suffered multiple disasters. On May 9, 1877, a major fire destroyed most of the facility except the warehouses. By October 1877, Simpson had rebuilt and resumed operations, keeping a fire engine on site. In 1921, the Simpson family sold part to London's Mile End Distillery Company. In 1932, a subsidiary of Distillers Company Ltd. purchased the entire distillery for £50,000 and immediately halted production. On August 16, 1941, a German Junkers Ju 88 bomber raid destroyed Warehouse No. 12, burning many whisky casks and contaminating local water supplies, reportedly poisoning livestock. Repairs began in winter 1941, but in 1943 the RAF 248 Squadron occupied the site until war's end. Post-war restoration ended tragically on October 3, 1959, when a still explosion during repairs destroyed equipment and damaged the distillery, resulting in a £15 fine for safety violations. Operations resumed but the distillery finally closed in 1983. By the late 1980s, most buildings were demolished; the final warehouse burned on April 11, 1991.

This dram hits you with a proper old school metal polish vibe at first—like sniffing a dusty workshop from the 70s. The beeswax is bold, almost paraffin-like, with a hint of quince jelly sweetness hiding under the surface. It’s got this bright, citrusy kick from tangerines and mandarins, but there’s also a deep, earthy humus note that makes me think of walking through a forest after rain. The limestone and chalk minerals pop through, crisp and clean, like licking a wet stone. Makes me wonder if it’s from up north, all windswept and briny. There’s a whisper of earl grey tea too, earthy teas weaving through the other citrus fruits—maybe orange honey lingering in the background. Looking back, I scribbled notes on a 2007 bottle once, and this baby’s only gotten waxier and rounder over the years. It’s rather long on the finish, but not in a bad way. Almost like it’s moved towards something wilder, more coastal, if you catch my drift. 🥃

Took a sip and immediately hit by this chalky minerality, like licking a limestone wall 😂. There's a crisp white wine edge and this old humidor vibe – all woody and dusty. The citrus is punchy, tangerines and mandarins dancing with quince jelly. Beeswax builds up as it sits, more and more, making it round and waxy. Baby's got rather waxier and rounder over the years in the bottle, reminds me of those earthy teas my gran used to brew mixed with humus. Bright and zesty, with that up north tang. Been sitting on my shelf since 2007, and re-reading my old notes – it's definitely evolved. Short enough on the finish, but the beeswax lingers. Feels like it's shifted towards that Clynelish character, more smoky and maritime. Even got hints of old school metal polish, oddly nostalgic.

The first nose hits you with this bright, almost citrusy punch – tangerines and mandarins dancing around, but there's something deeper, earthier too, like damp humus after rain. It’s got that chalky, limestone minerality underneath, which I can’t not notice, gives it a proper northern edge. The palate’s waxy, reminds me of old beeswax candles or that orange honey you get up north. There’s a hint of Earl Grey tea in there, slightly floral, and this quince jelly sweetness that’s come through more as it’s aged. Funny enough, the longer it sits, the more it feels like it’s moved towards Clynelish – sharper, more metallic, like licking an old school metal polish. But the finish is where it gets interesting: paraffin and more beeswax, almost like a humidor’s lingering scent. It’s rather long but not lingering in a bad way, just enough to make you want another sip. The baby’s definitely gotten rounder over the years in the bottle, that’s for sure 😊

quite like this one... starts with bright orange honey and tangerines, almost like a white wine but with more beeswax. Then it gets that old humidor thing going on, with earthy teas and a bit of chalk. The mineral notes remind me of limestone. A fabulous malt really. The waxier, rounder character from 2007 is still there, mingled with quince jelly and earl grey tea. Finish is rather long, with paraffin and mandarins lingering. A really lovely pour.
