Dalmore, the revered Highland single malt distillery founded in 1839 on the northern shores of the Cromarty Firth near Alness, established its visitor center in 2004 with a renovation in 2011. Despite commanding a prime position along Scotland's arterial A9 highway between Inverness and Thurso—a location that should naturally drive substantially higher footfall—the distillery currently welcomes just 12,000 visitors annually. Under the ownership of Whyte & Mackay (Emperador Inc.), the distillery secured planning consent in October 2018 for a transformative expansion. This involved demolishing existing office and bottling facilities to more than double the visitor center's footprint. Completed by August 2019, the reimagined center offers breathtaking panoramic vistas across the Cromarty Firth, though the scenic beauty is compromised by decommissioned North Sea oil platforms lingering in the firth, casualties of depressed petroleum prices. Production is orchestrated around a 10.4-ton stainless steel semi-lauter mash tun, eight Oregon pine washbacks with an extended 50-hour fermentation, and four pairs of distinctive pot stills. The wash stills feature unique flat tops, while spirit stills are equipped with water jackets that manipulate reflux between the lyne arm and neck, enabling exceptional copper contact and spirit refinement. Operational targets for 2019 envisioned 22 mashes weekly, yielding 4 million liters of new make spirit. The core portfolio comprises the foundational 12, 15, 18, and 25-year-old expressions, complemented by the masterful King Alexander III (six cask finishes) and the robust Cigar Malt Reserve. The Port Wood Reserve entered the permanent range in 2018, undergoing initial maturation in bourbon barrels before a secondary finishing period in tawny port pipes. Travel retail exclusives are anchored by Valour, with the 2016 addition of the Sherry Cask Trilogy: Regalis (Amoroso sherry), Luceo (Apostoles sherry), and Dominium (Matusalem sherry). Recent limited editions have amplified Dalmore's ultra-premium positioning, including reissues of the 35 and 40-year-old, the Vintage Port Collection trilogy, the 45-year-old (Spring 2018), and the landmark 60-year-old released in Autumn 2019 to global acclaim.

Had a dram that was pretty rough at first, but then the raspberries and oranges came through, with a hint of mushrooms and Cedar wood. Felt very powerful, almost miraculous, with green peppercorns giving a relatively spicy kick. There's a touch of dried pears, apple peelings, and a bit of earth, plus some orange zest and ginger. The aftertaste brings oranges again, a long finish, and a whisper of pipe tobacco. Overall it's an excellent one with loads of oomph and gold‑coloured warmth. 🥃

First thing that hits you is this big grassy, almost chlorophyll kick, like mowing the lawn at midnight 🌿. Then the oranges come rushing in – blood oranges and orange squash – with a real zesty punch. It's pretty rough at first, but then the chocolate and pipe tobacco settle in, all smooth and rich like Dalmore’s usual stuff. Midway, it gets really complex – white cherries, raspberries, dried pears, even some apple peelings. There’s a prickly heat from green peppercorns and less green spices than expected, more like soft spices and ginger. Earthy notes underfoot, with cedar wood and a touch of that cherry stem tea weirdness. Very powerful, this one, needs a splash of water to tame it down. The finish? Long and miraculous. Oranges again in the aftertaste, but less jammy fruits, more like a memory of Fanta and earth. Surprisingly, it swims like a champ, but that rough edge lingers. Works very well, though – a proper gold medal dram! 🥃

The first sip hits with a bold mix of white cherries and orange zests, quite complex to be fair. There's a prickly warmth from the ginger and green peppercorns, but it balances with soft spices and a hint of tea. The dried fruits and raspberries give it that jammy side, though not too fresh. Chocolate and pipe tobacco linger nicely, while the grassiness is bigger than expected but works very well. Oranges come back again in the aftertaste, which is long and smooth. Not too spicy overall, just enough kick. Feels like a miracle how all those fruits and Fanta-like sweetness blend with the earthy notes. Excellent one, really stood out. 🥃

Oof, this one’s a beast—needs water or it’ll bite ya 😅 First sip’s all sharp ginger and green peppercorns, like someone’s left a bag of fresh herbs in your dram. Then it mellows into this sticky gold mess of blood oranges and white cherries, almost like Fanta’s been poured over dried apple peelings. The spice kicks in proper too, not just soft cinnamon but something that lingers like a bonfire’s last embers. Cedar wood sneaks in behind, dry and proper, while the finish just won’t quit—chocolate and orange zests clinging on for ages. Bit rough around the edges at first, but bloody hell, it’s a miracle how it all comes together.

Blimey, this one’s a proper treat. It’s got this golden glow that catches the light, and the nose hits you with a mix of orange zest and something earthy, like mushrooms and cedar wood. First sip’s a bit rough, though – prickly, like green peppercorns and raspberries dancing on your tongue. There’s a big grassy note, maybe from the chlorophyll, and the ginger gives it a kick. It’s powerful, but not in a bad way, sort of like a bold tea with a twist of blood oranges. The soft spices balance out the bolder ones, and you get hints of apple peelings, dried pears, and white cherries. Chocolate lingers too, not too sweet, more like Dalmore’s usual dark stuff. The finish is long, with oranges popping up again and a touch of pipe tobacco. Needs a splash of water to tame it a bit, but even then, it’s got that oomph, that swims-like-a-champ quality. Proper complex, really – not your average dram.
