In 2017, Loch Lomond's owner signed a promotion agreement for its products in the expanding Chinese market; in June 2019, Loch Lomond's ties with China deepened further. Exponent Equity, the private equity fund that has been managing Loch Lomond Group (Loch Lomond Distillery's parent company) since 2014, announced it had sold the company to China's Hillhouse Capital for approximately $500 million to $550 million. Loch Lomond Distillery's equipment is extraordinary. When built in 1966, it was installed with a pair of straight neck stills. In 1990, another pair of stills was added. Four years later, a grain distillery was launched. In 1998, a pair of traditional pot stills was installed; in 2007, a single grain Coffey still was added, later supplemented by a third pair of straight neck stills. Now, the distillery boasts 13 stills of four completely different types! Of the 5 million liters of malt whisky produced annually at Loch Lomond Distillery, 3.5 million liters are distilled in Coffey stills for the popular Loch Lomond Single Grain Whisky (actually single malt, but not recognized as such by the SWA because no pot stills are used). Whiskies under the Loch Lomond brand have their spirit distilled in traditional stills and are blended with whisky distilled in straight neck stills before bottling. The Inchmurrin brand whisky comes from straight neck stills. Also from straight neck stills are the heavily peated Inchmoan brand whisky, and other brands not heavily promoted in official packaging (Inchfad, Glen Douglas, Craiglodge, and Croftengea). Other equipment includes a 9.5-ton full lauter mash tun, 10 stainless steel fermentation tanks (fermentation time 92-160 hours) dedicated to malt whisky processing. Additionally, there are 18 pieces of equipment dedicated to grain whisky processing. Regular releases include three brands: Loch Lomond, comprising Classic, Original, 10-year, 12-year, and 18-year expressions; Inchmurrin, with 12-year, 18-year whiskies and a Madeira wine cask finish; and Inchmoan 12-year and 1992 vintage. Duty-free products include Loch Lomond Single Grain, Signature blended Scotch, 12-year single malt, plus Inchmurrin Madeira cask finish, 10-year single cask, and 10-year Inchmoan. Limited editions include Loch Lomond The Open Special Edition (British Open Golf Championship) and a 50-year-old expression.

Got 24 little sample vials of the stuff last week, bloody brilliant 👌 First sip hits you with that smoky lapsang souchong vibe, bit of citrus zing from lime and citrons, then there’s this weird but ace whiff of paraffin and that fresh new Nikes smell? Wild but works. Got that subtle pickled fruit tang, faint bitter almond note, plus this super salty sea hit like you’re licking a brand new garden hose straight off the coast, bits of seaweed and seashell poking through too. The body’s that waxy medium weight, almost as pale as that weird white tequila I tried at a mate’s do last month. Absolutely perfect to sip alongside a plate of fresh oysters, no messing about. Properly excellent drop.

Just poured a dram and wow, the first thing that hits me is this bold mix of pickled fruits and citrus – like someone squeezed a whole lime and added twenty-four of those sharp, tangy notes. There's a smoky edge, almost like lapsang souchong, but then it’s oddly clean, like a brand new garden hose. A touch of bitter almonds and salty almonds dances with the taste, while the finish is all about oysters and the sea – seaweed and a fino butt kind of dryness. The sherry’s barely there, just a whisper, and the mouthfeel is waxy, like someone dabbed paraffin on my tongue. Medium-bodied but it lingers, leaving ash-like traces and a weirdly refreshing kick, like cracking open new Nikes on a summer day. Excellently strange, in a way that makes me wanna sip again. 🥃

Just poured a dram and immediately got this punch of seaweed and seashells, like licking a rock pool at low tide – proper briny, almost as white as some white tequila but with a weird twist of pickled fruits lingering underneath. There's a medium body, not too heavy, but the salty almonds and bitter almonds hit you next, sharp and nutty, kind of clashing with these faint lapsang souchong whispers. The finish is where it gets odd – reminiscent of a brand new garden hose mixed with paraffin, clean but synthetic, while the sherry's almost unnoticeable. I swear I tasted citrons and ashes at the back, maybe from the twenty-four of them casks? It’s excellent but strange, like drinking with oysters while wearing new Nikes and thinking of a very salty young baby’s tears. Wonderful waxy structure though, coats the tongue proper. 🥃

Blimey, that’s a proper coastal one—like licking a seashell with a hint of paraffin and a whiff of new garden hose. Salty as a baby’s tears, but then there’s this waxy, almost oily texture that’s just lovely. Faint sherry in the background, like it’s shy. Zing of lime and citrons, bit of ash, and yeah, would go smashing with oysters. Not too heavy, not too light—just right. 🥃

Right, this one's quite something. First thing I noticed was the colour — almost as white as some white tequila, really pale and clean looking. On the nose I got this hit of seaweed and seashells straight away, like standing by the shore on a windy day 🌊. There's a bit of that lapsang souchong smokiness in there too, and oddly it reminds me of a brand new garden hose — that plasticy rubber thing, you know? When you taste it, blimey, it's salty. Very salty. Like a very salty young baby if that makes any sense 😅. There's salty almonds and bitter almonds mixed together, and something almost pickled fruits-ish lurking in the background. A touch of lime and citrons cutting through. The texture's lovely though, really nice waxy structure to it. Medium body, nothing too heavy. I keep getting flashes of paraffin and ashes, and weirdly new Nikes — that fresh rubbery thing again. Finish is long, lots of seaweed lingering around. Would be absolutely cracking with oysters honestly 🦪. The sherry influence is there but it's almost unnoticeable, just adds a bit of depth without getting in the way. Yeah, this is excellent. Proper character on it. Would definitely have another glass.
