Glen Garioch (pronounced 'Glen Geery') stands as one of Scotland's most venerable whisky institutions, nestled in the historic market town of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. Officially founded in 1797—though the Aberdeen Journal documented production as early as December 1785—this distinguished Highland distillery embodies over 235 years of uninterrupted Scottish whisky heritage. The distillery's character underwent a profound transformation in 1994 when traditional floor malting ceased, marking the end of its lightly peated era (8-10 ppm phenol content). Contemporary Glen Garioch expressions showcase a classic unpeated Highland style, though vintage bottlings from the pre-1994 era remain highly coveted by collectors for their subtle, elegant smoke. Technical specifications reflect an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship: a single 4-ton full lauter mash tun feeds eight stainless steel washbacks with an extended 72-hour fermentation, fostering complex ester development. The copper pot still system comprises a wash still and spirit still (the latter replaced in 2016), with a third still held in reserve. This meticulous process yields approximately 45,000 liters of new make spirit annually from seven mashes per week, matured in four traditional dunnage warehouses with earthen floors and thick stone walls. The core portfolio is distinguished by its bold 48% ABV bottling strength, delivering exceptional mouthfeel and intensity. The Founder's Reserve (no age statement) and the 12-Year-Old form the foundation, while limited editions demonstrate remarkable wood management. The 15-Year-Old, matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, is strategically positioned for the travel retail channel. Since 2013, the Virgin Oak series has explored the impact of pristine American white oak maturation. Prestigious vintage releases from 1978, 1990, 1994, 1997, and 1998 offer temporal snapshots of the distillery's evolution, complemented by a special 2007 bottling commemorating the Rare Fayre celebration. The Renaissance Collection, a four-chapter narrative series launched in 2014, chronicled Glen Garioch's rebirth, culminating in a sophisticated 18-Year-Old finale in 2018. Each December, the signature Rare Fayre festival transforms the distillery into a convivial gathering where enthusiasts tour the historic facilities, participate in advanced masterclasses, sample exclusive cask-strength expressions, and procure artisanal crafts—evoking the traditional 'Fair' gatherings that have long defined Scottish community and commerce.

Got a whiff of oils and waxes first, then a bright burst of lemongrass and lemon zest that feels superbly citrusy. The mouth feel is excellent – clean, a bit grassy with a touch of guava juice and straw, and there’s a chalky, austere edge that reminds me of a train passing in the distance. A straight smoke lingers at the back, making it feel chiselled and tense yet very enjoyable. 🥃

Blimey, cracked open a bottle last night after a long shift 🥃 The mouth feel’s so excellent, superbly smooth but that chiselled and tense kick keeps it bright, not cloying at all. First you get that chalky tingle, then fresh fruits burst through – loads of citrus, lemons, citrons, even a tiny drop of guava juice? Superbly citrusy honestly. Then there’s lemongrass, waxy notes, hints of paraffin, straw and that slightly grassy whiff, mixed with light olive oil and oils, even a wee putty vibe? It’s got that kind of Clynelishy thing, definitely on that Pulteney – Clynelish – Glen Garioch line, you can tell that east-coast maritime side comes through a bit. Finish is so long, cleans your palate proper, just a faint hit of straight smoke at the end. Hurray! Perfect after-work tipple 👌 Oh, and did I catch a faint train whiff halfway through? Maybe just me being daft 😂

This one’s got a real chiselled and tense character—like a crisp autumn morning. There’s a superbly citrusy punch upfront, almost lemony and lemongrassy, but it’s balanced by a slightly grassy, chalky edge that keeps it honest. The waxy texture clings to your gums, and those whiffs of oils and waxes make me think of old candles and workshops. It’s austere, but in a way that cleans your palate clean, leaving hints of guava juice and fresh fruits dancing about. The finish is long, smoky—like straight smoke curling into the air—and there’s something oddly putty-like about the aftertaste. Hurray! It’s very excellent, mind you. Some train of thought takes me to the east-coast maritime side, all salt and seaweed, but then it pivots to paraffin and straw, weirdly enough. A proper dram, this—bold and a bit bonkers. 🥃

Got a dram here that’s just brilliant. First whiff and crikey, it’s all lemons and lemongrass, super citrusy 🍋. Then underneath, there’s this chalky, dry note, like sniffing a limestone wall after rain. Touch of fresh grass and olive oil too. Takes me right to the east coast, you know? Maritime winds and all. The mouth feel is excellent, waxy and slick, coats the tongue proper. Guava juice pops up, then straight smoke – not bonfire smoke, more like a clean paraffin lamp. There’s a bitter grassiness that cleans your palate right out, followed by something austere and chiselled. Lingering finish, long and tense, with branches of citron and fresh fruits. Whiffs of oils and waxes all the way through. Spot on.

Wow, just had a dram and it's very excellent – chiselled and tense on the palate, kind of that classic style you know? Whiffs of oils and waxes hit first, with straw and grass underneath. Fresh fruits pop in, lemons and guava juice maybe? 😊 The mouth feel is superbly citrusy, waxy and a bit putty-like, really cleans your palate. Long finish, austere but pleasant, with lemongrass and branches. Light olive oil texture, straight smoke and paraffin notes, chalky on the back end. Some train of flavors there, reminding me of the east-coast maritime side. Really enjoyed it!
