Glen Garioch (pronounced 'Glen Geery') stands as one of Scotland's most venerable whisky institutions, nestled in the historic market town of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. Officially founded in 1797—though the Aberdeen Journal documented production as early as December 1785—this distinguished Highland distillery embodies over 235 years of uninterrupted Scottish whisky heritage. The distillery's character underwent a profound transformation in 1994 when traditional floor malting ceased, marking the end of its lightly peated era (8-10 ppm phenol content). Contemporary Glen Garioch expressions showcase a classic unpeated Highland style, though vintage bottlings from the pre-1994 era remain highly coveted by collectors for their subtle, elegant smoke. Technical specifications reflect an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship: a single 4-ton full lauter mash tun feeds eight stainless steel washbacks with an extended 72-hour fermentation, fostering complex ester development. The copper pot still system comprises a wash still and spirit still (the latter replaced in 2016), with a third still held in reserve. This meticulous process yields approximately 45,000 liters of new make spirit annually from seven mashes per week, matured in four traditional dunnage warehouses with earthen floors and thick stone walls. The core portfolio is distinguished by its bold 48% ABV bottling strength, delivering exceptional mouthfeel and intensity. The Founder's Reserve (no age statement) and the 12-Year-Old form the foundation, while limited editions demonstrate remarkable wood management. The 15-Year-Old, matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, is strategically positioned for the travel retail channel. Since 2013, the Virgin Oak series has explored the impact of pristine American white oak maturation. Prestigious vintage releases from 1978, 1990, 1994, 1997, and 1998 offer temporal snapshots of the distillery's evolution, complemented by a special 2007 bottling commemorating the Rare Fayre celebration. The Renaissance Collection, a four-chapter narrative series launched in 2014, chronicled Glen Garioch's rebirth, culminating in a sophisticated 18-Year-Old finale in 2018. Each December, the signature Rare Fayre festival transforms the distillery into a convivial gathering where enthusiasts tour the historic facilities, participate in advanced masterclasses, sample exclusive cask-strength expressions, and procure artisanal crafts—evoking the traditional 'Fair' gatherings that have long defined Scottish community and commerce.

Had a dram that just pinged out at me with joyous complexity – mechanical oils, a touch of camphor and zesty fruits, then a wave of coastal freshness and salty pickling brine. It felt oily, textural, with a wondrous sludge of peat and tar, superbly long and drying, leaving me grinning like the Cheshire Cat. A bit medicinal, a bit farmyard, but utterly brilliant fashion 😄

Firstsniff hits a stupendous nose of seaweed, tea and a hint of leafy earthiness – feels very clean and fresh. On the palate it’s peaty and vegetal peat, with rubbery notes like a bicycle inner tube and a touch of pepper, finishing long and perfectly rounded. Leaves a delicately perfumy aftertaste that makes you want to come back later for more 😌

Wow, first sniff hits me with a sharp medicinal tang, like a Band‑Aid mixed with eucalyptus and a whiff of tar. Then the palate opens up – bright citrus, minty freshness, a touch of salty sea breeze, and this weird waxy, chalky feel that reminds me of old books and a dusty wardrobe. There's a deep, almost petrolly side lurking underneath, balanced by resinous fruit and a hint of gentian bitterness. Feels powerful, young yet refined, like it’s been sleeping in the bottle for decades. 🍃

Justhad a dram that hit me with resinous fruits and a pinch of salt, then a weird Band‑aid note popping up. Loads of waxy feel, a hint of petrol and tar, with germoline and various waxes swirling. It’s high power, complex, chalky, gentian‑y, waxy smoky lemony chalk vibes, a touch of myrtle and mint, finishing a bit sadly not eternal but still splendour. There’s creosote and that ode to Mr Samaroli’s shared beliefs in glass ageing lurking in the background. Feels like an old coat and fur wardrobe meeting a maelstrom of amazing medicinal citrus, a powerful young malt refined over thirty years, with lanoline, refining, sorb berries and an epic glorious nose. 🍃

Nose is properly epic and glorious, like opening an old wardrobe stuffed with moth-eaten coats and furs, mixed with a Band-Aid and a packet of sorb berries. There’s this maelstrom of medicinal notes and citrus that hits you hard – almost too much, like a gentian kick in a white wine spritzer. High power, high concentration, proper refined malt but with a petroly side that’s a bit like licking a tar-soaked book. The palate’s a right complexity – waxy smoky lemony chalk, mentholy bananas, and various waxes swirling around. It’s got that creosote and lanoline thing going on, like old books and roots soaked in resinous fruits. Amazing medicinal and citrusy notes carry through, but the mints and eucalyptus keep it refreshing, like a breath mint after a campfire. 94/95 proof, this one’s got legs – a proper ode to glass ageing, though it’s sadly not eternal. Splendour, but also a bit of an embarrassment to today’s world of whisky, all waxy elements and no apology. Just a shame it’s only a dram, not a bathtub full.
