Glen Garioch (pronounced 'Glen Geery') stands as one of Scotland's most venerable whisky institutions, nestled in the historic market town of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. Officially founded in 1797—though the Aberdeen Journal documented production as early as December 1785—this distinguished Highland distillery embodies over 235 years of uninterrupted Scottish whisky heritage. The distillery's character underwent a profound transformation in 1994 when traditional floor malting ceased, marking the end of its lightly peated era (8-10 ppm phenol content). Contemporary Glen Garioch expressions showcase a classic unpeated Highland style, though vintage bottlings from the pre-1994 era remain highly coveted by collectors for their subtle, elegant smoke. Technical specifications reflect an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship: a single 4-ton full lauter mash tun feeds eight stainless steel washbacks with an extended 72-hour fermentation, fostering complex ester development. The copper pot still system comprises a wash still and spirit still (the latter replaced in 2016), with a third still held in reserve. This meticulous process yields approximately 45,000 liters of new make spirit annually from seven mashes per week, matured in four traditional dunnage warehouses with earthen floors and thick stone walls. The core portfolio is distinguished by its bold 48% ABV bottling strength, delivering exceptional mouthfeel and intensity. The Founder's Reserve (no age statement) and the 12-Year-Old form the foundation, while limited editions demonstrate remarkable wood management. The 15-Year-Old, matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, is strategically positioned for the travel retail channel. Since 2013, the Virgin Oak series has explored the impact of pristine American white oak maturation. Prestigious vintage releases from 1978, 1990, 1994, 1997, and 1998 offer temporal snapshots of the distillery's evolution, complemented by a special 2007 bottling commemorating the Rare Fayre celebration. The Renaissance Collection, a four-chapter narrative series launched in 2014, chronicled Glen Garioch's rebirth, culminating in a sophisticated 18-Year-Old finale in 2018. Each December, the signature Rare Fayre festival transforms the distillery into a convivial gathering where enthusiasts tour the historic facilities, participate in advanced masterclasses, sample exclusive cask-strength expressions, and procure artisanal crafts—evoking the traditional 'Fair' gatherings that have long defined Scottish community and commerce.

This dram hits you with an epic, glorious nose right off the bat – all splendour and that refined, medicinal-citrus punch. There's a proper maelstrom of waxy, smoky lemon and chalk upfront, like someone's been polishing old books in a petrol-soaked shed. The white wine brightness cuts through tar-like depth and mints that dance with mentholy bananas and sorb berries. It's powerful, complex – think creosote-soaked roots and gentian bitterness, but then there's this faint lanolin warmth and a Band-aid-like sweetness underneath. You get a whiff of old coats and furs from an antique wardrobe too, musty but intriguing. The petroly edge is sharp, but in a way that makes the high concentration of flavours sing. Sadly not eternal, but oh, that finish – lingering chalky smoke and a hint of salt. Proper lush stuff. 🥃

Wow, that nose is just... epic and glorious. First thing I get is this wave of mentholly bananas and eucalyptus, like a medicinal chest opened right under your nose. Then it shifts to old books and what reminds me of old coats and furs in an old wardrobe. There's a definite Band-aid and germoline thing going on too, but it's strangely appealing. The palate is a maelstrom. It’s high power and high concentration alright. First there's this waxy, smoky, lemony chalk, followed by a big hit of lanoline and many waxy elements. Then it turns to resinous fruits, a bit of sorb berries and a petroly side. Some tar and creosote in there too, but it's all held together. It has this complex, refining character. You get mints, gentian, a little myrtle... a bit of white wine acidity cutting through. A touch of salt. It’s like a war between medicine and fruit, wax and smoke, all incredibly refined. Gosh, you could try to write a book about this one. The finish just goes on, though sadly not eternal. It’s a powerful, glorious dram that makes today’s whisky world feel like an embarrassment in comparison. A proper ode to what can happen in a bottle. 95? 94? Who’s counting. Cracking stuff. 🤯

Tried this one last night and, crikey, it's stunning! 🥃 Bottled at 50%, the peat has this incredible depth and fatness – farmyard vibes, salty, gets even saltier. More vegetal and earthy as it opens up. Finish is superbly long, with this wondrous sludge feel. Utterly brilliant! Nose is beautifully fresh and chiseled, like preserve citrus fruits. Raw ingredients shining through, resinous, iodine. Got so absorbed I missed three busses! 😅 It's joyous, brimming with freshness. Fat and tarry, oily. One of the greatest peated malts, really. Textural, with tars pinging out at you. Can't stop grinning like the Cheshire Cat. 😊

Blimey, I nearly missed three busses just sitting there with this one 😄 Nose comes at you beautifully fresh and chiselled — like zesty fruits and white wine, then suddenly you're sticking your head in a malting kiln. Iodine, camphor, a whiff of the engineer's garage, mechanical oils… it's all there, pinging out at you in utterly brilliant fashion. On the palate it's gelatinous, oily, almost resinous — fat and hefty smoke slathered all over the place. Perfectly pure and salty peat, lemons in brine, pickling brine, green olives, a bit of farmyard… all those tiny earthy and vegetal notes just shining through. There's umami things happening too, and wee herbal and citric bits darting about. Quite medicinal in places, tarry, with tars and embrocations that remind me of something coastal and fresh at the same time. Proper wondrous sludge, in the best possible way 😂 The depth and fatness of the peat flavour is stunning — and it stays superbly long, drying beautifully with that salty, peppery, smoky finish still going strong. Joyous complexity from start to finish, honestly. The sort of dram that makes you grin like the Cheshire Cat and completely lose track of time. Kudos to Mr Samaroli for putting something like this together — right up there with the greatest peated malts I've ever had the pleasure of sitting with. 🥃
