Glen Garioch (pronounced 'Glen Geery') stands as one of Scotland's most venerable whisky institutions, nestled in the historic market town of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. Officially founded in 1797—though the Aberdeen Journal documented production as early as December 1785—this distinguished Highland distillery embodies over 235 years of uninterrupted Scottish whisky heritage. The distillery's character underwent a profound transformation in 1994 when traditional floor malting ceased, marking the end of its lightly peated era (8-10 ppm phenol content). Contemporary Glen Garioch expressions showcase a classic unpeated Highland style, though vintage bottlings from the pre-1994 era remain highly coveted by collectors for their subtle, elegant smoke. Technical specifications reflect an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship: a single 4-ton full lauter mash tun feeds eight stainless steel washbacks with an extended 72-hour fermentation, fostering complex ester development. The copper pot still system comprises a wash still and spirit still (the latter replaced in 2016), with a third still held in reserve. This meticulous process yields approximately 45,000 liters of new make spirit annually from seven mashes per week, matured in four traditional dunnage warehouses with earthen floors and thick stone walls. The core portfolio is distinguished by its bold 48% ABV bottling strength, delivering exceptional mouthfeel and intensity. The Founder's Reserve (no age statement) and the 12-Year-Old form the foundation, while limited editions demonstrate remarkable wood management. The 15-Year-Old, matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, is strategically positioned for the travel retail channel. Since 2013, the Virgin Oak series has explored the impact of pristine American white oak maturation. Prestigious vintage releases from 1978, 1990, 1994, 1997, and 1998 offer temporal snapshots of the distillery's evolution, complemented by a special 2007 bottling commemorating the Rare Fayre celebration. The Renaissance Collection, a four-chapter narrative series launched in 2014, chronicled Glen Garioch's rebirth, culminating in a sophisticated 18-Year-Old finale in 2018. Each December, the signature Rare Fayre festival transforms the distillery into a convivial gathering where enthusiasts tour the historic facilities, participate in advanced masterclasses, sample exclusive cask-strength expressions, and procure artisanal crafts—evoking the traditional 'Fair' gatherings that have long defined Scottish community and commerce.

This dram's got a real kick to it – paprika and a fair bit of pepper hit first, like a gentle slap that wakes you up. Then the blood oranges and raspberries come dancing in, bright and cheeky, while rose petals and peonies float around like a summer garden. There's something woody and leathery too, like old pipe tobacco mixed with a hint of horse saddle, but it's balanced by this almost miraculous depth from the baby barrique and Ruby Port. The vinegar notes sneak in, sharp and tangy, but the raspberries keep lifting it, making it all feel rather rich and lively. It's a proper mouthful – fun, good fun – with a long finish that leaves you smacking your lips. Weirdly, there's a touch of mustard and salt that makes you sit up straight, like it's got a mind of its own. Not for the faint-hearted, but it's got charms that stick with you, like an old friend who tells stories you can't quite believe but love all the same. A little mad on the palate, but in the best way possible. 🥃

First nose hits you with this lovely mix of rose petals and old pipe tobacco, like sitting by a fire with a vintage armchair. Then the raspberries kick in—fresh ones and some liqueur, sweet but not cloying, keeps lifting the whole thing. There's a proper hit of pepper and paprika, gives it a bit of a kick, almost miraculous how it balances. The ruby port adds a rich, jammy depth, reminds me of those tarts mum used to make. Mushrooms and wine vinegar sneak in, earthy but clean, pairs weirdly well with blood oranges and mustard. It's rather rich, almost too much, but in a good way. The baby barrique probably why it's so concentrated, every sip's packed with something new. Finish's long, leaves this warm, spicy tingle. Fun, good fun, but a little mad on the palate—like if a raspberry kissed a pipe and they had a baby. Peonies and that blush color, charming. Definitely one for the sweet tooth, though I reckon it's got enough quirks to keep you guessing.

Blimey, this is a proper rollercoaster! Rich as anything, with that pipe tobacco and paprika kicking about. Then raspberries just keep popping up, like a cheeky liqueur splash. Rose petals and peonies floating around, almost magical. Long finish too, with a peppery punch and a hint of mustard and salt. Pure fun, this one 😄

Right, this one proper caught me off guard at first. Took a sip and immediately thought of a dusty old library with a smoldering pipe tobacco pouch left open. 🚬 But then it shifts, gets rather rich and a bit like sniffing a bouquet of peonies and slightly crushed rose petals. Quite specific, that. The raspberries come through nicely, keeps lifting it all up with a little tang, almost like a fine raspberry liqueur mixed with a hint of red wine vinegar. Has a proper mad streak on the palate – a flash of mustard powder and sea salt, followed by something earthy, like mushrooms after rain. Oddly charming, really. Finishes long, with that 'blush/partridge eye' colour coming to mind, and a final ghost of more tobacco and a worn horse saddle leather. Pure fun, a proper character. 🐎🍷

Right, so this one starts off with a good hit of pipe tobacco and pepper – almost like an old library with a fire going. Then it goes into something rather rich, like a walk through an autumn wood with mushrooms underfoot. The fruit bits come through later. Got this mad flash of raspberry liqueur and blood orange, like a fancy dessert. There's a hint of rose petals and something floral, peonies maybe? Which is lovely. What's funny is that raspberry note keeps lifting the whole thing up, so it never feels heavy. The finish is long, with a bit of paprika and that saddle leather coming back. Wildly good fun. 🎩✨
