Glen Elgin has deep roots in three distilleries connected to White Horse Blended Whisky. First is Lagavulin, inherited by the brand's creator Peter Mackie from his father. Second is Craigellachie, built by Mackie in 1891 to supply malt whisky for White Horse. Third is Glen Elgin itself, owned not by the Mackie family but by DCL, which acquired White Horse Distillers in 1927. Since the 1890s, single malt whisky from these three distilleries formed the base of White Horse, one of the world's best-selling whiskies in the first half of the 20th century. Though now ranked 15th in whisky sales, White Horse remains the most popular Scotch whisky in some regions, selling 19 million bottles in 2018. Although Glen Elgin wasn't included in Diageo's 1988 Classic Malts series, it has been sold as a single malt since 1977. Respected by blenders and recognized for its consumer sales potential, it briefly appeared in the Flora & Fauna series. In 2002, Diageo gave four brands increased focus—Glen Elgin, Caol Ila, Clynelish, and Glen Ord—launching the Hidden Malts series. While Hidden Malts sold for several years, Glen Ord has since joined The Singleton family, while the other three now appear in the expanded Classic Malts series. Since 2001, Glen Elgin Distillery has operated with one 8.4-ton Steinecker full-lauter mash tun, nine larch washbacks (two replaced in 2018), and six small stills. The distillery runs 12-16 mashes weekly. The stills are connected to six wooden worm tub condensers. In 2019, the distillery operated five days per week, producing 1.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. The sole official bottling is Glen Elgin 12 Year Old. In 2017, Glen Elgin released an 18-year-old expression for the Special Releases series, matured in bodega European oak sherry casks.

Blimey this one’s a proper treat 🥃 Nose first hits you with eucalyptus oil and ripe pears, maybe a little pinewood drift too? Then you take a sip and that fizzy lemon juice zing comes through first, followed by peach, peach syrup, fruit syrups and sweet oils, little hint of cool mint at the back. There’s that sappy smoke and sourdough tang peeking through, intriguing malt backbone, rounded oak influence gives it a creamy, smooth feel, touch of cane syrup and light honey, barley water sweetness rounds it off. More complex than your average daily dram, medium length finish, even has that chalky little note to keep it interesting. A touch muddy in the best way, proper satisfying.

This dram's got a proper mix of stuff going on. First sip hits you with ripe pears and peaches, proper sweet and juicy, like peach syrup and cane syrup dancing about. There's a creamy custard thing happening too, which is nice, but then you get this sappy smoke lingering round the back, remindin' me of Pinewood forests after a damp day. The malt's got a bit more bite than expected – intr iging, though, not sharp. Rounded oak influence sits heavy, maybe from a well-used cask, with a hint of chalky earthiness. Fizzy lemon juice pops up mid-palate, cutting through the sweetness, while mint and sour dough notes give it a quirky twist. Not overly clean, mind, but that's part of the charm. The finish's medium length, leaves you with barley water and a touch of that smoky smoke again. Easy drinker, but complex enough to keep you guessing. Proper one for a quiet evening by the fire. 🥃

Right, so this one... first off there's a yeasty, almost sourdough bread note that hits straight away, mixed with ripe pears and a bit of peach jam. 🍑 It's not the crispest dram I've had – there's a bit of a muddiness to it, like drinking lemon juice that's gone slightly fizzy but not quite sharp. The sweetness is quick though, comes through as cane syrup and light honey, with a custard creaminess underneath. A subtle minty-eucalyptus note peeks in, and there's a rounded oak that hangs around, not overwhelming. The whole thing feels easy, like barley water on a summer afternoon, with that intriguing malt note tying it all together. Not super clean, but interesting.

Lovely warm dram 🥃 I get soft honey, a bit of oak, gentle spice, and a wee smoky touch. Feels cosy, smooth-ish, with a nice dry finish. Quite easy to sip on a chilly evening.

Oh wow, this one's proper lovely 😍 Smooth vanilla and honey on the nose, with a bit of butterscotch comin through. Quite malty too if im honest. On the palate? Creamy, almost buttery texture. Getting some dried fruit — raisins and fig sorta thing. A gentle spice kicks in after a mo, warming the whole mouth. Hints of dark chocolate and maybe a touch of espresso? Deffo some oakiness there, but not overdone. Finish is long and satisfying 🥃 Hints of smoke and leather linger, with a sweet caramelly fade. Really well balanced dram this. Perfect for a quiet evening in. Would pair brilliantly wi a square of dark chocolate imo 🤌 nose: vanilla, honey, butterscotch palate: creamy, fruity, spiced finish: long, smoky, warming
